Abstract:
"A lady (three-quarter length) in profile to the right. with the enormous coiffure of 1776-7 grotesquely exaggerated. Her hands are in a muff. Her inverted pyramid of hair supports three quasi-circular redoubts surrounded by cannon on which troops are fighting. On each is a flag large out of all proportion to the soldiers. There are also a train of artillery, and a number of tents. All the men in the redoubts are dressed as British soldiers but are firing point-blank at each other; their three flags are decorated respectively with an ape, with two women holding darts of lightning, and with a goose."--British Museum online catalogue and "A companion print to British Museum Satires No. 5335. "Lord Amherst in profile to the right in general's uniform rides a prancing horse, holding up a large sword, dripping with the blood of two geese, one of which lies dead beside him, the other staggers, with its neck slashed. Beneath the design is engraved: "If I had Power, Id kill 20 in an Hour."Behind, red-coats on horses with drawn swords are indicated among clouds of smoke. "Fashionable carriages throng the west side of St. James's Street, stopping outside a house with a pilastered door (right) above which is a notice: 'Chalk Drawing'. A dense crowd of tiny figures enters. The crowd is watched intently by Haydon who stands (left) on the opposite pavement; a taller man, probably a pupil, takes his arm. Haydon wears spectacles and holds a small portfolio. A goose labelled 'W C' menaces him from behind. At the bird's feet are two papers: 'Cabal 2 Octavo Volumes W C.' and 'Quack Artist Play .W C. Weather Cock.' There are two placard bearers; one behind Haydon and on the extreme left holds up a notice: 'Chalk Drawings by Haydon['s] Pupils Landsers & Bewick--Private Day.' The other is a small boy (right), assailed by hissing geese, at whose feet is a paper: 'Catalogue Raisonny'. His placard is inscribed 'Exhibition of Drawings, by Haydons pupils Landseers and Bewick for the Cartoons and Elgin Marbles.' The street recedes in perspective to the gate of St. James's Palace.
