"Conspirators prepare an explosion in the vaults of the House of Commons (or of a building symbolizing the Constitution). Massive triple pillars support Gothic arches, the inscription [used by George as a title] etched across the centre pillar round which barrels of gunpowder are piled. The scene is lit by a beam of light slanting from the huge eye of the King whose features emerge faintly from an illuminated patch in dark clouds in the upper right. corner of the design. This strikes the conspirators, all wearing cloaks and steeple-crowned hats reminiscent of Guy Fawkes. The foremost is Grenville who pours on to the paved floor a train of powder from a barrel which he holds, inscribed 'Jesuits Powder'. Next him (r.) Howick leans forward to tilt a barrel of 'True- Whig Gunpowder'. Behind is Lauderdale handling a barrel of 'Gunpowder a la Brissot'. On the extreme left. behind Grenville, Sidmouth crouches, clasping with senile impotence a barrel of 'Cathartic Gun Powder' [cf. BMSat 9849]. Behind stands Petty holding a barrel of 'Pop-Gun Powder'. The taller Windham is behind with a barrel of '[M]etaphysical Gu[n Powder]'. Ellenborough scowls over Windham's shoulder. The tall Moira (ex-Master of the Ordnance) has a barrel of 'Ordnance Powder'. Between Grenville and Petty is the upturned profile of the bulky Temple, clutching at a barrel of 'Broad-Bottom Gun Powder'. Behind him, his spectacled father, Buckingham, reaches for a barrel of 'Catholic Gunpowder'. In the foreground on the extreme left., a little aloof from the others, Sheridan kneels, tilting a barrel of 'Dramatic Gunpowder'; he wears his Harlequin suit (cf. BMSat 9916). Beside him are two barrels: 'Patriotic Gun-Powder', intact, and 'Democratic Gun-Powder', on its side its contents pouring out. Two horses labelled Obstinacy and Pride driven by Mansfield head for an abyss pulling a chaise occupied by a sleeping George III who holds a paper stating "I glory in the name of Englishman." Bute stands behind as footman holding papers entitled places, pensions, reversions. A wheel rolls over Magna Carta and the horses trample the Constitution as mitred clergymen joined by North hold out their hands for favors. Behind the chaise Pitt the elder and Lord Camden reach out as if to protest, while in the foreground a minister offers a bag of money to a crowd of men and women. In the background America is depicted as a city in flames while a demon flies above carrying a sack labelled "National Credit." "The Princess of Wales and the Earl of Bute drag the British Lion, or George III, in a small car, such as children use, decorated with a big Thistle; on the king's head is a very large jack boot, which, falling over his face, blinds him. Pitt leans over the balcony and endeavours to remove the boot, i.e. to deliver the British Lion from the influence of Bute. The Duke of Cumberland, very fat, wearing the costume supposed to be appropriate to Roman generals, rushes forward to aid the king, his nephew. A soldier, a sailor, and a lawyer endeavour to hold back a wheel of the car, pulling at a rope attached to it. A number of persons, male and female, stand under the balcony and look on. In the background a harbour is indicated by the masts of ships. On our left is "THE OLD BRITISH WARE HOUSE", from which merchants are despatching bales of goods to "Pondicherry", "Martinico 1'', "Guadeloup", "Louisbourg", and "Quebec". These are the names of places captured from the French during the war which it was proposed to conclude by the peace promoted by Lord Bute, and agreed to in 1762. A Frenchman and a Spaniard, colonists (?), are receiving these goods in an amicable way. ... This satire was doubtless designed to induce the ministry of Lord Bute to desist from surrendering the places in question to the French as, even thus early in the negotiations, it was rumoured they intended to do. ...The minister and the princess drag the car towards a "Hosptial for Scoth pensioners." On our right, at the windows, three Scotchmen appear. Hogarth, mounted on a ladder, is busily painting a Scotch Thistle on the sign of the hospital. On his paint-pot is written: "500 250". The Duke of York, wearing shirt, breeches, and boots, kneels before him, with bowed back, a handkerchief held to his face. Beside him and at the King's feet, are his military coat, hat, sword, and a paper: 'Resignation'.
