In English., Watermark: similar to Briquet 12781., The text includes: 1) Table of Contents of art. 2, referring to the early foliation. 2) A collection of hunting and forestry laws similar to those published by John Manwood, A Brefe Collection of the Lawes of the Forest (London, 1592) and A Treatise and Discourse of the Lawes of the Forrest ... (London, 1598). 3) Two extracts. (1) De placito forestarum. B. Thorpe, ed., Ancient Laws and Institutions of England ( London, 1840), p. 228; (2) Dialogus de Scaccario, W. Stubbs, ed., Select Charters and other Illustrations of English Constitutional History (Oxford, 1913), pp. 221-222. 4) Consuetudines et assisa de foresta. 5) Ordinatio forestae., Script: written in Gothica Cursiva Currens (Secretary), often difficult to read. Gothica Cursiva Antiquior is used as display script., and Binding: grey paper over pasteboard; on the spine a leather label with gold-tooled inscription: "FOREST / LAWS / MS. / CIRCA /1580".

"Scene in a country town with two newly-elected members of parliament (one a representation of George Bubb Doddington, the other visible only as a shadow on a distant wall) carried shoulder-high along the street, led by a blind and ragged fiddler and surrounded by a chaotic and disreputable crowd; two chimney boys sit on the church wall, a dancing-bear interferes with a donkey's load and is about to be clubbed by the driver, the one-legged bear-leader (dressed in sailor's clothes) is engaged in a fight with a man swinging a flail, a rifle slung over a monkey's shoulder discharges to the horror of a black serving woman, a sow and her piglets up-end a woman as they charge across the street, a soldier stripped to the waist for a boxing bout is taking tobacco from a wrapper; to right, dishes of food are being carried into an elegant house where victory is being celebrated."--British Museum online catalogue

"Stanhope, striding forward in profile to the left, approaches an altar to 'French Principles', while with his left foot and left hand he overturns a bishop seated behind him on a bench. On the summit of a quasi-cylindrical altar is the seated figure of a female monster with webbed wings, snaky hair, and pendent breasts, a firebrand in the right hand, a dagger in the left. Behind her stands a foppish Frenchman with a simian head, dressed as a soldier, one foot resting on a large skull. In his right hand is a headsman's axe, in his left he holds out to Stanhope a hangman's noose. Stanhope places on the altar a paper inscribed in large letters: 'Philosophy Atheism Rapine Murder'. The altar itself is decorated with a headsman's axe and block, the word 'Liberté' in a wreath, and shackles. At its foot lie a cross and an overturned chalice.
