Abstract:
Grey stands in the center pulling back a curtain on the large painting (right) addressing the three men (probably Peel, Cumberland, and Wellington) who look on in amazement. Grey says, "Gentlemen this is a fine color'd picture representing Futurity. The idea of which was concieved [sic] by an injured people and painted by a new and promising artist. Reform." Reading from the left Peel looks at himself in the painting seated in a chair at a loom, "Why if there a'nt me at a spinning Jenny." Cumberland, hat flying off, looking at himself depicted in the painting on his backside, "And me dying on a dunghill." And Wellington closest to the painting that depicts him as a wounded soldier holding a broom and begging with his cap in hand, observes "And me begging." In the painting is a tower with the British and French flags the former with the year 1814, referencing the Wellington's successful campaign to end the Peninsular War

A satire of the 1832 Reform Bill, with a see-saw with the Crown as the fulcrum. At the center is William IV, waving the Union flag; to the right is Lord Grey, seated on the lever, helping William balance with a scroll marked 'Union', with John Bull standing underneath, wedging the lever up with the 'Reform Bill'; and to the right the Duke of Wellington tumbles backwards as the lever breaks under the weight of him and two huge scrolls marked 'Anti Reform'.

A thin cat with the head of Charles Grey walks on top of a wall. In his mourn is a fish labeled "First Lord of the Treasury 6000". His long tail, curving around the design and ending at the bottom right, is covered in white patches that are labeled with the names of his relations, their positions, and the amount of their pay. A stick figure of Wellington, with sword raised, appears in the right corner above the end of the tail. Posted on the wall are two signs: "Commit no nuisance" and "Reform in Parliament meeting will be [illegible scrawl]."

A series of crude (and in some cases explicitly racist) lithographed cards numbered 1-16, with scenes relating to political reform on both sides of the Atlantic. On British side, they cover the reforms to the franchise made by the 1832 Reform Act, poking fun at 'poor distress'd turn'd out Boroughmongers' (No. 1), the rural squirearchy (No. 7), Taxes (No. 9), the established Church (No. 10) and Irishmen (no. 12), among others. United States political issues are shown in the second card which reuses - with added racist slurs - the design of Edward Williams Clay (1799-1857) entitled 'Hurrah! hurrah for Genl. Jackson!!' under the caption 'Life in Philadelphia'. Cards nos. 4 and 7, with yet more overt racism, use references to American segregationism to caricature British political positions

"A low platform covered with roses extends almost across the design; from this bed new Ministers advancing from the left are ejecting the old. Roses are scattered on the floor. The central figure is the tall and handsome Castlereagh, author of the phrase, see British Museum satires No. 10558, &c. With a taut two-stringed bow in his left hand, a quiver on his shoulders, he strides across Grenville who is on his back on the bed, and takes 'Candle End[s] & Cheese Paring[s]' from a bag with which Windham tries to make off (see British Museum Satires No. 9735). He says: "I'd have you to know I've two strings to my Bow!! Down, Down, Down, Derry Down!!" [See British Museum satires No. 10426.] Behind him, Portland threatens Grenville (in his peer's robe) with a big block of 'Portland Stone' [see British Museum Satires No. 10718, &c.]. In front of Windham Rose steps forward from the bed to grasp a large rose on the floor: 'Treasurership of the Navy.' This Sheridan, in his Harlequin's suit (see British Museum Satires No. 9916), is crawling towards, saying, "Just got into my first Nap - how - Unfortunate - come Sir fat touch that however." Rose holds up a pair of bellows inscribed 'Sing old Rose & burn the Bellows'. Eldon, in Chancellor's wig and gown, strides from the bed on to the prostrate Erskine, seizing the Purse of the Great Seal, whose cord is still round the latter's arm. He raises the mace to strike the ex-Chancellor, whose wig has fallen off. Erskine says: "Be quiet I'll retire"; he holds a money-bag inscribed '4,000 Pr Anm' [see British Museum Satires No. 10714]. Lauderdale, wearing a plaid, is behind him on the ground. On the extreme left Canning, standing on the bed, holds up a massive club inscribed 'Bon Mots & Repartee by G C--g'; he stoops over Howick pointing at the 'Catholic Bill', which the latter holds. Howick steps from the bed, angrily looking up at Canning (his especial enemy, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10972), but, unlike his colleagues, not devoid of dignity. On the ground between Howick and Sheridan is Petty in his gown, one hand on his 'Budget', a small bag, the other on a sheaf of papers inscribed 'Ways & Means'. He says: "Bless me I wish I was safe in College I'd never have anything more to do with Taxes" [an allusion to his youth, and to the fact that he was M.P. for Cambridge]. "Ministers recline on a large low platform, representing a magnificent state bed, which is completely covered with roses. It recedes in perspective from left to right. On the left is Fox, looking sourly over his left shoulder at his neighbour, Sheridan, to say: "This is the most uncomfortable bed I was ever on in my Life and not the least like a bed of Roses - Zound!! what a thorn is running into me - Oh that Bramble - Sherry my Dear how do you find it - ". Sheridan answers: "My dear Charley, I have not had a wink since I have been on it, - curse that Castle man what did he mean by his bed of roses - I am as sore from the tip of my Nose, to the tip of my Toe - as if I had been roling on a quick set-hedge - or stung to death by a swarm of bees at a Hampshire Farmers [an allusion to Cobbett's pen]". Behind Fox, and in profile to the left, Moira, in uniform, with cocked hat and jack-boots, sits up, very erect; he says: "What are Cannons or Bombs or clashing of swords, compared to the pain I endure." Windham, next Sheridan, registering melancholy, says: "I feel more uneasy than if the whole Volunteer force was upon me." Ellenborough, behind Sheridan and Windham, ill-temperedly puts his hand to his wig. Erskine, also in wig and gown, reclines as if exhausted, his eyes closed, his attitude characteristic of his notorious fainting in court (see British Museum Satires No. 7956). He and Grey (Lord Howick from 11 Apr.), who sits behind him, are in profile to the right; the latter says: "It is just such a bed, as I expected the late bungling bed makers would leave us." On the extreme right little Lord Henry Petty (wearing his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown) sits up, angrily holding above his head two handfuls of thorn-branches. He says: "I shall never have done clearing the brambles and Nettles from this Bed, my Budget would not hold one half of them." The low frame of the bed is carved and has a valance of fringed and festooned draperies. At the head are the Royal Arms; looped curtains are suspended above it."--British Museum online catalogue

"William IV stands, very erect and stern, in profile to the right, holding at arm's length a birch-rod inscribed 'Reform'. Behind him, as ushers, on the extreme left, Brougham and Grey stand in consultation. The King says to a body of discomfited schoolboys (right): 'Get you gone and never let me see your faces again till you are Reformed'. The boys are (left to right) Wellington, wearing a peaked cap and an old, over-large, military coat, and carrying a bag, walks hand in hand with Peel who wears an ill-fitting policeman's tunic and holds a slate on which is scrawled the figure of a policeman (see British Museum satires no. 15768, &c). Beside and behind them are Sadler and Wetherell. In front of Peel walks Twiss with a book under his arm; next him is the small Sugden wearing a pinafore. Taller than the others are Hunt wearing a hunting-cap and holding ajar of his blacking (see British Museum satires no. 16575) and Sir R. Wilson wearing a smock and a cap and holding a slate inscribed 'Bob Wilson'. Wellington to Peel: 'Oh Bobby--Bobby what shall we do now?' Wetherell, looking back, says (as late M.P. for Boroughbridge, cf. British Museum Satires No. 16602): 'I am afraid I shall never be admitted into the school again'. A racist and complex print purports to show a dinner held at the African Institution, becoming increasingly drunken and debauched as the evening progresses. Cruikshank employs many common 19th-century racist stereotypes of black people - drunkenness, aggressiveness, and sexual promiscuity - and lampoons the idea that black people could aspire to behave like white people. In the print, the white abolitionists are portrayed as unsuspecting and bewildered innocents who find themselves entirely out of their depth. Cruikshank seems to suggest that their association with black people has corrupted them - that they are being 'uncivilised' rather than black people becoming 'civilised'. Meanwhile, the idea of relationships between races is ridiculed. Many familiar and important figures are represented. Abolitionists like Wilberforce, Stephen and Macaulay appear next to the street entertainer Billy Waters and the radical Robert Wedderburn ... A satire on Wellington's dismissal of the Duke of Clarence. A pyramid built of large stones stands in a open field. At the apex is inscribed the word "King" at the base left "Lords" and right "Commons". Kneeling on either side in his robes is a peer facing a simply dressed M.P. Between them on the ground are the heads of a unicorn and a lion which is being gnawed by a crow and a rat. Wellington in full uniform straddles the two men who support him. Between his legs a plaque on the pyramid reads: "Multum in parvo, or the British Constitution formerly consisting of the three estates, King, Lords, Commons, abridged into an elegant extract in one volume!"
