A richly dressed but grotesque and balding old lady sits before her dressing table holding a lap dog and attended by a leering hairdresser and his assistant. The former places on her head a huge wig with side curls, flowers on the front and a profusion of ostrich plumes on top. Draperies adorn the dressing table and window, and patterned wall paper and carpet are visible

On the right, a lady (Mrs. Catherine Macaulay) with an aquiline profile and wearing a morning gown, sits at a dressing-table; she is dipping a brush into a pot marked 'Rouge', other toilet implements and a looking-glass on the table. Her hair is in a grotesquely caricatured erection, with side curls, intended to ridicule the fashions of the day; on the top of it is a hearse drawn by six horses, decorated with enormous ostrich-feathers. Similar feathers adorn the heads of the horses. On the left behind the lady, a skeleton stands at a rectangular table grasping with both hands an hour-glass whose sands have run into the lower glass out the bottom onto the table. On the table there is also a knife. The base of the skeleton's spine is transfixed by a large arrow. On the wall behind the lady's dressing-table is a portrait bust of a clergyman, in profile to the right (Dr. Wilson).

A young woman under an enormous heart-shaped coiffure. In the topmost section of her hair is a kitchen fireplace with meat roasting on a spit, and a monkey in a fool's cap sitting on the chimney admiring itself in a mirror. On either side of the hair are kitchen implements, poker, tongs and shovel, a mop, broom, etc., and, in the center, a large wheel of cheese infested by mice. Various vegetables are assembled around the cheese, while a dog and cat confront one another below it.

Verse in lower margin: The taste at present all may see, but none can tell what is to be. Who knows when Fashion's whims are spread, but each may wear this kitchen head. "A lady (three-quarter length) in profile to the right. with the enormous coiffure of 1776-7 grotesquely exaggerated. Her hands are in a muff. Her inverted pyramid of hair supports three quasi-circular redoubts surrounded by cannon on which troops are fighting. On each is a flag large out of all proportion to the soldiers. There are also a train of artillery, and a number of tents. All the men in the redoubts are dressed as British soldiers but are firing point-blank at each other; their three flags are decorated respectively with an ape, with two women holding darts of lightning, and with a goose."--British Museum online catalogue and "A companion print to British Museum Satires No. 5335.
