"Two watchmen holding up lanterns on poles stand one on each side of the door of Mrs. Clarke's house in 'Gloucester Place' [see British Museum Satires No. 11222]. Between them stands a man holding a pole, supporting a board: 'Beware of Bad Houses And Naughty Women'. This obstructs access to the house, where a couple are seen through a window embracing each other (right). On the left an officer and a parson who have been approaching, retreat in dismay. On the right a burly termagant clenches her fists. One of the new gas-lamps, see British Museum Satires No. 10798, &c, projects from the corner of the house, its globe inscribed 'Light & Heat Company'."--British Museum online catalogue

"The beam of a pair of scales is suspended from a vertical bar terminating in a ring which encircles one of many solid rays from a large sun (l.) surmounted by the Prince of Wales' coronet and feathers. The 'Rising-Sun' (see BMSat 10258) is partly obscured by dark clouds, but its rays extend across the design and illuminate especially Sidmouth and Ellenborough. The former is poised triumphantly on the cross-beam, depressing the r. scale with his foot, while he holds on his shoulders Ellenborough in judge's wig and gown, who manipulates the scale in the same direction. This lower scale contains the 'Broad-Bottomites' ie the Grenvillites, or New Opposition, the other, the 'No-Bottomites', i.e. the Foxites, or Old Opposition. In the latter (l.) the occupants hold the ropes with expressions of anxiety; the inscription suggests that they lack 'bottom' or endurance (a pugilistic phrase). Fox is the most prominent, between Erskine (l.), in Chancellor's wig and gown and with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Grey (r.). Moira, in cocked hat and regimentals, stands stiffly behind. Fox and Grey have bonnets rouges but do not wear them. The other bowl contains Grenville, one hand on his fat nephew Lord Temple; the heavy posteriors for which the family were noted take up much of the bowl. Windham waves his hat triumphantly. Of two other partly obscured occupants one resembles Lord Henry Petty. The scales are suspended above the curve of the globe on which Great Britain and the Continent are indicated. Behind the North Pole (r.) is a setting sun containing a royal crown; its feeble rays are outshone by the heavy beams of the rising sun (or son). "A stout naval officer (right) is attacked by a taller and slimmer officer (left), who siezes him by the coat and raises his cane to strike. A civilian stands between them holding back the aggressor. The stout officer, Captain Vancouver, wears an enormous sword; a fur mantle hangs from his shoulders inscribed 'This Present from the King of Owyhee to George IIId forgot to be delivered'. From his coat-pocket hangs a scroll which rests on the ground, part being still rolled up: 'List of those disgraced during the Voyage - put under Arrest all the Ships Crew - Put into Irons, every Gentleman on Board - Broke every Man of Honor & Spirit - Promoted Spies - ' His left foot is on an open book: 'Every Officer is the Guardian of his own Honor. Lord Grenvills Letter'. From the pocket of the civilian (Vancouver's brother) projects a paper: 'Chas Rearcovers Letter to be publish'd after the Parties are bound to keep ye Peace.' Vancouver's assailant, Lord Camelford, says: "Give me Satisfaction, Rascal! - draw your Sword, Coward! what you won't? - why then take that Lubber! - & that! & that! & that! & that! & that! & - Vancouver, staggering back, with arms outstretched, shouts: Murder! - Murder! - Watch! - Constable! - keep him off Brother! - while I run to my Lord-Chancellor for Protection! Murder! Murder! Murder". Behind him, on the ground, lies a pile of shackles inscribed 'For the Navy'. Two very juvenile sailor-boys stand together (left) watching with delight. On Vancouver's right is the lower part of a shop (right) showing a door and window in which skins are suspended. Round the door are inscriptions: 'The South-Sea-Fur-warehouse from China. "Two designs on one plate, divided by the title. [1] A hussar officer riding in front of his men mismanages his mount, so that it rears slightly, and he is about to slide off. He shouts "March, Trot, Canter, Charge, halt, halt, halt, I mean." He has dropped a trumpet from which issues a blast: "Oh what a Ninny I was to throw Myself off, they're laughing at me avarice Vanity False friendship, Ingratitude, Double dealing, absurdity, Hippocracy, Malice, Cut down Countenance." His sabre lies on the ground, and five riding-switches which have been rolled up in the cloak fastened to the saddle fall from it. On the ground is a paper: 'hints to bad horsemen'. The men (right) gallop up in perfect order holding their sabres erect. One says: "Our Young Whip is not an Old Jockey". In the background (left) is a church or cathedral (perhaps intended for Salisbury), with trees and houses. [2] The rider has just picked himself up (right); the horse, still rearing, looks over its shoulder to say: "You seem more frightened than hurt, You have been taught the Value of Whips more than the use of them." A soldier, holding the trumpet, has ridden up and halts between horse and rider; he says: "I hope your Honor is not hurt." The officer answers: "I am not hurt upon My honour." "A satirical sequel to British Museum Satires No. 6456, in which Fox is in the cart. Fox drives (right to left) Sir Cecil Wray as a pauper in the county pass-cart to the place of his settlement in Lincolnshire. Fox sits on the high driving-seat of a ramshackle cart flourishing his whip and looking round at Wray, who sits disconsolately in profile to the right, his hands clasped and resting on the side of the cart. Fox says, "I will drive you to Lincoln where you may Superintend the Small beer & brick dust". Wray says, "I always was a poor dog But now I am worse than ever". Hood stands (right) in profile to the left. looking at the cart and saying "Alas poor Wray". A signpost (left) points to Lincoln. A reference to plans for the combined attack on Gibraltar by French and Spanish forces. The attack came in September of 1782 and was repulsed by the British

An artist with a crazed look on his face paints at his easel the picture of Hebrew prophet (?) with wild hair and clenched fists. The artist is only half-dressed, his foot in the contents of an overturned chamber pot. He is surrounded by other pursuits of genius: a violin, scientific and medical equipment, a Roman bust, a French horn, a pile of books, etc. On the wall are three drawings: an air balloon, a dancer, and a portrait of Peter Jesta. He sits at the foot of a bed where his pretty wife sleeps peacefully, unaware that her young child is pouring out wine into a glass while a slightly older child sits with bellows before a stove, the spout of a kettle dangerously aimed in her direction
