"The procession has advanced to the door of a church (r.) which a parson closes, dropping his prayer-book, open at the 'Burial Service'. Only his arms and robe are visible; he says: " - no Burial here, for Broad-Bottom: - he died a Roman; - besides, - 'tis a felo-de-se case; - take him to the next 4 cross-roads; & the Family has a large Stake always ready!" Only the acolyte at the head of the procession has realized this check: little Lord Henry Petty drops his bell and candle and capers in dismay. The three pall-bearers (a fourth is hidden behind the coffin) are (l. to r.) Sidmouth, Lord St. Vincent, and Windham. All wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks, and clutch handkerchiefs, weeping large tears. Below the coffin are seen the robes and bare sandalled feet of monks. On the top of the coffin is Grenville, face downwards, and showing the back of his wig, and a dome- shaped hump denoting his famous 'broad-bottom' (see BMSat 10530). At the four corners are ostrich plumes. On a placard on the side of the pall: 'Gul: Baro: de Broad-Bottom Obiit die Martis 24° A: D. 1807'. Behind the coffin walks the Pope, in his tiara and robes, weeping and supported between the Marquis of Buckingham and his son Lord Temple. Both weep with gestures of extravagant grief; both are dressed as priests. Behind, thin and ascetic, is Howick, a barefooted monk, holding up the Pope's long robes. Behind walk arm-in-arm, both shambling and dissipated, Sheridan clutching a bottle of 'Brandy' and General Fitzpatrick, from whose pocket hangs a paper: 'Tears of Hedge Lane' [a squalid resort of prostitutes in Westminster]. Both wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks. Next, Erskine and Ellenborough walk together; Erskine claps to his eye his beloved and discarded Chancellor's wig. At the end of the procession and on the extreme left. are Lauderdale and Moira wearing his cocked hat with a mourning scarf and cloak. All weep, registering deep distress. "The Duke of Bedford, a stalwart, handsome and smiling farmer, strides (left to right) across a newly ploughed field, scattering guineas from a pouch slung to his shoulder; on his back is a large sack inscribed '£'. As he sows the tips of bonnets-rouges and daggers sprout up; behind him (left) they progressively emerge more completely, and appear as little Jacobins, a raised dagger in each hand, crowding in close ranks towards the horizon, where they hail (or are smitten by) thunderbolts which dart from clouds in the upper left corner of the design and explode on reaching the ground. The soil is prepared by Fox, Sheridan, and Lauderdale: Fox's smiling face is the centre of a sun which issues from clouds and shines on Bedford. A bull (John Bull) is harnessed to a plough which is guided by Sheridan wearing a bonnet-rouge. Lauderdale (bare-headed) raises a whip to flog the weary bull."--British Museum online catalogue

"Britannia (left) grovels before a monster (right) representing the French Republic. Behind her stand Fox, Sheridan, and Stanhope, as sansculottes, joyfully hailing the apparition. Britannia on her knees, and bending forward, holds out her arms in a gesture of abject submission, pointing to her shield and spear, the crown and sceptre, and 'Magna Charta' which lie on the ground before her. She is on the edge of a cliff. The monster is supported on dark clouds; he is a man seated with arms and legs akimbo, one jack-boot is planted on the sun, a face in its disk looking from the corners of the eyes at Britannia with a dismayed expression; the other is on a crescent enclosing the old moon. His seat is the point of a huge bomb-shaped cap of 'Li-ber-tas'. His head is a black cloud on which grotesquely fierce features are indicated. Above his head rises a guillotine emitting rays of light. His dress is that of a ragged sansculotte with a dagger thrust in his belt. The British sansculottes are also bare-legged and wear belts in which a dagger is thrust; but they have nothing of the fierce arrogance of France. Fox, his stockings ungartered, and Sheridan, shambling forward with propitiatory gestures, remove their bonnets-rouges. Fox holds out two large keys labelled 'Keys of the Bank of England'; Sheridan proffers a document: 'We Promise the Surrender of the Navy of Great Brita[in] - of Corsica [see BMSat 8516] - of the East & West Indias [see BMSat 8599] - & to abolish the Worship of a God' [cf. "Pitt arrogantly bestrides the Speaker's chair, towering high above the galleries of the House. He plays cup (or rather spike) and ball with the globe, on which 'France' is disproportionately large, the British Isles small and obscure. His head is turned to the left towards his own followers, who crowd obsequiously towards his huge right foot which rests on the head of Wilberforce (papers inscribed 'Slave Trade' issuing from his pocket) and on the shoulder of the bulky and truculent Dundas, who wears Highland dress. Canning (the 'Trial of Betty Canning' projecting from his pocket) kneels to kiss the toe of his shoe. His left foot crushes the leaders of the Opposition: Erskine, Sheridan, Fox (all prostrate), and a fourth (? Grey) with upstretched arms. M. A. Taylor, a tiny figure, with the legs of a chicken (see BMSat 6777) and wearing a bonnet-rouge, sprawls on the floor near Fox. The rest of the party raise their arms in dismay. The Speaker (Addington) looks up (raising his hat), as do the Clerks. Pitt's coat-pockets bulge like sacks; in one (left) are papers: 'Volunteers, 200000 Seamen, 150000 Regulars, Militia'; the other is stuffed with guineas, on this his left hand rests, holding a paper 'Resources for supporting the War'."--British Museum online catalogue

On the right a wild scuffle is going on: two termagants seize each other by the hair, a third, on the ground, pulls down one of the combatants; they resemble prostitutes of St. Giles. Others are comelier and better dressed. She is evidently the Betty of the famous fruit shop in St. James's Street, the 'patriot Betty' of Mason's 'Heroic Epistle', 1773. 'Betty's' was a fashionable 'lounge' and centre of gossip, often mentioned by H. Walpole and others.
