Richard Phelps was a carpenter and coffin maker living in the Forest of Dean, Gloucester, above his workshop. The inventory contains a detailed listing of his tools as well as his household possessions -- furniture, cloths, kitchen wares and other household goods -- as well as his stock boards for his business. The docket title is dated 9th-10th [November] 1758 on the verso of the second leaf

The lady asks: "O! dear, doctor, has John studied the book?", her doctor replies: "Aye, aye; nothing requir'd but my book, page 75 -gently John! Gently! Page 75". The black servant exclaims: "Eh! eh! Missey, you makey wind for true." The doctor has some resemblance to John Abernethy

- "A crowded interior. An old maid, grotesquely lean, spectacled, and hideous, sits in an arm-chair beside her fire (left) on which a concoction in a saucepan boils over, surrounded by fierce flames. This she stirs with a spoon but turns to the right to pore over the recipe, which is in her left hand. One bare foot with deformed toes rests on a stool beside which are a spike-toed high-heeled shoe and a stocking. A table beside her and the floor below it are crowded with bottles, jars, and medicaments, with a pestle and mortar and a lighted candle. The candle sets fire to her cap, and the flame reaches a little bird-cage hanging from the ceiling. A cat walks under her petticoats; a tiny lap-dog lies in a cushioned band-box lid at her feet. A second cat claws towards a mouse which runs up the pole of a perch on which stands, a draggled and angry cockatoo. A pug-dog also looks up at the bird. Against the wall is a stuffed cat in a glass case; above it is a burlesque picture of Susanna and the Elders. A neat curtained bed is on the right. The chimney-piece is decorated with Diana (burlesqued) urging on the hounds to seize Actæon. On it are three peacock's feathers, bottles, spills, a shell, a Chinese mandarin, &c. - A haggard old woman carelessly mixing a recipe for corns on the fire in her sordid bedroom. As well as being cluttered with potions, the room contains an assortment of squabbling pets; on the wall hangs a painting depicting the attempted seduction of Susanna by the elders. The lettering below image, a recipe in verse, begins: "Take tacamahacca, an ounce & a half, a pound of good suet, from the skin of a calf, 3 barbicued apples, a ha'p'orth of pears, 3 dragon flies pounded, the ear wax of bears, a small peice of cheese, a little gum copal, some putrified salt with some essence of opal ..."

- An operator treating Ann Ford, a society lady, with "Perkins's tractors", for her venomous tongue and "An old maid is tied by arms and ankles to an armchair while an operator applies 'metallic tractors' to her tongue, using both hands. An iron clamp holds her head steady. She wears old-fashioned dress with a laced stomacher. From the doctor's pocket projects a paper: 'Fores [partly obliterated] Operator'. Rays of flame dart from the victim's tongue: 'Half-Hints', 'Innuendoes', 'Hypochrisy', 'Envy', 'Scandal', 'Detraction', 'Malignity'. Three young girls watch from the left: they say: "good Heavens? could you suppos my Aunt had such an envenomed Tongue"; "oh yes my dear there are many more such in our Town, if this good man cures all such Tongues he will deserve a Statue"; "Yes and all our young Friends I am sure will subscribe liberally". The room is that of the patient: on the right is a round table where spectacles have just been laid down; on it are writing materials, a large 'Bible', and a paper: 'Mem - not to forget at Miss Magpy's Tea party the hints respecting the Young Miss Tumid also the round appearance of Mrs Generous who was married last Week. Particulars Insinuate how Miss Lively lives so genteel When we cannot find out what resources she has------to take Care I do for Miss Bold who insolently said she did not believe the story of Miss Virtues Slip.' Beside it an open cupboard, with bunch of keys in the lock, shows decanters of 'Ratafia', 'Peppermint', and 'Caraway', four books: 'Duty of Man', 'Eloise', 'Sermons', 'Glass Cookery', and a large bottle of 'Nig' [gin], a flagon of 'Cherry Brandy', and a glass. A low screen with half-panels has on one leaf a flaming globe inscribed 'Observe the End'; the ray of 'Half-Hints' strikes the flames. On the screen sits a parrot.
