Description:
In Latin., Script: copied by one hand in Southern Gothica Textualis Formata (Rotunda), using Uncial and Half-Uncial d. The additions and substitutions at the end of the codex are in a coarse form of the same type of handwriting. Musical notation in black Nota Quadrata., Rich decoration. Initials: (1) 1-line versals (flourished) alternately red and blue; (2) 2-line flourished initials in the same colours infilled with leaves and followed by a flourished majuscule in black, at the beginning of each text; if on the top line, they are surmounted by gable-like penwork. The KL-ligatures in the Calendar (4 lines) have the same decoration; (3) 4-5-line (6-line for I) foliate initials with foliate marginal extensions and generally 3 gold balls in the margin, followed by a 1- or 2-line flourished majuscule in black, at the beginning of the principal texts; (4) historiated initials, with floral extensions or gold balls in the margin, at the beginning of the major subdivisions of the text., The worn and defective edges (especially the lower edges) of many leaves were repaired by means of pieces of used parchment pasted on the damaged places., and Binding: 17th century. Reddish brown leather over wooden boards with square edges. The covers blind-tooled with fillets; spine with four flat bands. Marks of metal corner pieces and central bosses. Paper pastedowns. Numerous brown leather tabs at the outer edge of the leaves.

Twenty engravings, woodcuts and drawings, colored by hand, also pasted in and surrounded by simple borders in red ink. Crude 1-line initials in red and faded purple. Square notes on 4-line red staves. Rubrics throughout., Many leaves repaired or trimmed. Some leaves or portions of leaves used to complete sections were inserted sideways or pasted over another part of the manuscript., and Binding: Eighteenth century. The orthography is very defective., Headings in red; alternately red and blue versals in the text; 2-line plain initials alternately red and blue; 2-line flourished initials in liquid gold with red penwork on ff. 2r, 16v and 19r. A 7-line initial of the same type and in the same colours at the beginning of the text., and Binding: 17th century (?), Italian. The quires are sewn without cords directly into the pasteboard cover, which itself is covered with blind-tooled goatskin. Marks of two pairs of ties.

Heightening of the majuscules in yellow. 1-line plain versals alternately red and blue; 2-line plain initials and 4-line initials (plain or of the littera duplex type, but without penwork; 5-line on ff. 2r, 126v and 145r) in red and/or blue. Although the main prayers and hymns generally begin with a 4- or 5-line initial, the distribution of the various kinds of initials often seems at random., and Binding: Seventeenth century. In Latin and Anglo-Saxon., Script: Copied by three scribes, all writing Northern Gothica Textualis Formata. The fragment is copied in careful Anglo-Saxon Minuscule., The decoration consists of 1-line plain initials alternately in red and blue in the text; 2-line flourished initials in blue with red penwork with marginal extensions; 3- and 5-line litterae duplices with partial or full penwork borders (J-motifs) as indicated in art. 2. Litterae duplices also on ff. 116r, 133v, 143v (artt. 3, 6 and 7)., and Binding: Original undecorated leather over oak boards (?). Spine with three raised bands. Traces (?) of one clasp.

In Greek., Watermarks: Harlfinger Chapeau 74., Script: Written by a single scribe in tall, upright minuscule., Decorative initials, 6- to 5-line, in red with simple floral designs; rubrics throughout., and Binding: 16th-17th centuries. Three original chain-stitched supports, the thread laced into square-edged, flush, wooden boards grooved on the edges. The beaded, colored endbands are sewn on cords which are attached in holes in the edges of the boards. The edges are painted with a red and black interlace design, the spine smooth and round. Covered in brown goatskin, blind-tooled with concentric borders, different on each board, the central panels filled with flowers and small diamonds. One pin hole in the edge of the upper board, three holes for a strap in the lower. Rebacked. According to A. R. A. Hobson, the binding originated in Crete.
