In Latin., Script: Part I (ff. 1r-28v): Written by a single scribe in round gothic bookhand, below top line. Part II (ff. 29r-169r): Written in small gothic bookhand, above top line. Many sections traced over in darker ink., Part I: Divided initial, blue, 8-line, with intricate red pen flourishes extending down inner margin, f. 1r. Plain red initials, 2-line, to mark new letter of the alphabet; first letter of each word in table stroked with red; more important words preceded by paragraph mark. Part II: Blue or red initials (some divided), 20- to 7-line, with pen flourishes in red and/or blue, for prologue (art. 5) and each letter of the alphabet. On ff. 29r, 43v, 60r: a single dragon-like grotesque, in red and blue, extends up or down the margin. Initials, 2-line, alternate red and blue with plain pen flourishing in opposite color., Text has faded and flaked throughout., and Binding: Fourteenth century (?), Italy. Original sewing on four tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on outside of beech boards and nailed. A beaded, natural color endband. Covered in kermes pink tawed skin with an X within a rectangular frame drawn on it. Traces of five round bosses on each side and four truncated diamond-shaped catches on the lower board; the upper board cut in for the straps. Rebacked.

The scribe's knowledge of Latin was defective., The illustration consists of two maps and numerous profiles of coastal landmarks, all in coloured pen and ink drawings. The profiles are copied from the woodcuts in the printed edition., and Binding: contemporary Dutch parchment binding, gold-tooled. On the flat spine the handwritten inscription in Southern Gothica Textualis: “Carta del navigare del mare Oceano”.

In French., Script: Written and illuminated by Pierre Aymes in a roman and italic script influenced by printing., Thirty-two miniatures, in brown frames, of average quality. 2-line initials, gold, blue or silver against gold, red, green or blue grounds. Bounding lines reinforced in gold and pink. Rubrics throughout. Full border on title page made up of panels framed in gold filled with grotesques, candelabra, masks against pinks grounds., and Binding: 16th-17th centuries. Sewn on three single, tawed supports laced into the boards. Gilt edges and red- and cream-beaded endbands. Covered in brown calf, gold-tooled all over with strap work and arabesques in concentric frames. Two fastenings, now wanting. Engravings of the Virgin Mary glued to front and back pastedowns. Front pastedown: Virgin and child handing rosary to St. Dominic with legend Psalterii B. Mariae Virginis aut Rosarii inuentur S. Dnic. Back pastedown: S. Maria Mater Dei with four flowers in corners.

In Latin and French., Script: Written in batarde by several persons., Forty-six miniatures of very poor quality, the majority 10- to 8-lines, rectangular and full width of folio, framed in brown ink; four others (ff. 42v, 53r, 73v, and 104v) 5- to 4-lines, square, in gold frames edged in blue. 4- to 3-lines initials, ff. 1r-7v only, silver or gold on magenta or blue irregular grounds, with gold or silver filigree. 2- and 1-lines initials in red. Line-fillers in red and brown floral patterns. Rubrics throughout., and Binding: 16th-17th centuries. Resewn on four very small vegetable fiber cords. The spine of the cover shows that the earlier supports were nearly flat and double and that there were two half-bands near head and tail. Red edges. Covered in yellow/brown calf, blind-tooled with a central panel filled with strap work inside floral borders. A rectangle of leather near the center is painted red and "Margveritte de Savoye" is tooled near the head of the lower board. The cover has been made into a case or hollow-backed binding.

Floral borders for each 12- through 9-line initial (except ff. 15r and 258r), red, blue, and green flowers with gold dot centers, connected by brown ink stems, arranged in rows or spirals; ff. 13r and 84v with a vase and bird in the margins. Two 9-line initials, ff. 274r and 298r, on parchment bifolios, in a markedly different style, green and blue respectively, with yellow and white highlights, against gold grounds, filled on f. 274r with a large flower, blue and red, on f. 298r with short sections of curling pink and green acanthus. Borders large blue or red flowers with gold dots and centers or short sections of blue and red acanthus on spiraling brown stems with small green teardrop leaves. Numerous 7- through 2-line initials, red and/or blue, with brown penwork and flourishes, as above. I-initials, up to 13-line, red or blue throughout. Some capital W's in text in blue or red. 2-line KL monograms, alternating red and blue. Some portions of the text, including proper names, underlined in red. In Latin., Script: Written by more than five hands in Carolingian script and Praegothica., Art. 1 is decorated with red plain initials, more or less small decorated initials in various colours and large initials. Art. 3 has a title in mixed Capitalis/Uncialis. The part of art. 4 copied by hand B has some highlighting in yellow, red or green and plain initials; the part copied by hand C has a few plain initials; the 12th-century part copied by hand D has red headings with instructions in small script written in the outer margins, plain or flourished Romanesque initials and an explicit in decorated mixed Capitalis/Uncialis. Art. 5 is undecorated apart from its title and the opening initial. There are effaced drawings in the lower margins of some leaves in art. 1., and Binding: Twentieth century. Fine historiated initial (12-line) on f. 1r, the author seated at a lectern, pink, purple, green, red, and blue foliage on a gold ground, edged in black, with delicate white highlights; an exuberant vine and foliage border in three margins; the upper margin with a bar, gold and blue, with white highlights. Eight illuminated initials (9- or 8-line) on ff. 14v, 29v, 45r, 61r, 79r, 98v, 115r, 132r in the same style, borders in outer margin. Fine penwork initials throughout, blue with red penwork or vice versa (7- to 4-line). Several lines following initials written in ornate majuscules widely spaced on every other line, filled in with sepia penwork (some left unfinished, especially near end of manuscript). 2-line initials, blue with red or red with blue penwork, less ornate than above. In Latin., Script: Written in elegant italic script; headings and names of persons in humanistic bookhand or square capitals, in gold., On f. 1v: coat-of-arms of the Adelasio family of Bergamo (gules, per fess 3 pennants argent on staves or; in chief azure, an eagle displayed or) surrounded by a full floral border in vivid shades of gold, brown, red, orange, and blue, with two peacocks in lower panel and a framed oval miniature of the Virgin Mary supported by griffins in upper panel. On f. 2r similar treatment of folio, but with text of diploma in center of page and a miniature of St. Antony of Padua in upper panel; ff. 2v-3v surrounded by full floral borders of less exuberant design than ff. 1v-2r., and Binding: Seventeenth century. Brick-red sheepskin heavily gold-tooled with a central medallion surrounded by floral arabesques and fan corners in multiple roll borders of different designs, the outer one blind-tooled. A red wax seal (cracked), displaying the arms of Gregory, Cardinal Barbadicus (Barbarigo; 1626-97), and enclosed within the original gold-tooled circular holder (58 mm. diameter) that matches the binding, is attached to the spine with twisted silk cords.
