In Latin., Script: Part I (ff. 1-2, palimpsest): Written by several scribes in humanistic bookhand; for the passages from Seneca, the initial letter for each verse is set between vertical bounding lines. Part II (ff. 3-130): Written by a single scribe, below top line, in humanistic bookhand that sits somewhat above the ruled line; the conclusion of the text on ff. 129v-130r was added by a different hand., One large illuminated initial, f. 3r, 9-line, pink with white highlights on irregular angular ground, blue with white filigree and a thin white line outlining the ground. Filled with a stylized interlacing pattern of white vine-stem, white with green and yellow shading against gold ground. Numerous small initials, 3-line, yellow, on blue or blue and pink grounds with white filigree. Initial heading in gold; running headlines for book numbers in red., and Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Rigid vellum binding, gold-tooled. Traces of turn-ins and bosses from earlier binding on f. 130 and possibly on f. 1.

In Latin., Script: Written in neat italic by a single scribe who also added frequent marginal notes., One fine 6-line initial (f. 1r), gold, with white-vine ornament, on blue, pink, and green ground decorated with white, gold, and blue dots extending into side and upper margins, the vines inhabited by birds, insects, and putto; gold dots and brown hairsprays. A coat of arms in lower margin (effaced and blotted out) supported by a winged putto, set in ornament similar to above. Large blue capitals, 5- to 4-line, in blue, throughout. Headings and Roman numerals for books (in upper margin of recto), in red, for ff. 1r-35r., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Citron goatskin, gold-tooled, by C. In Latin., Script: Written in small gothic bookhand by a single scribe., Three illuminated initials, 3-line, at the beginning of the Prologue (f. 1v), Bk. 3 (f. 29v), Bk. 4 (f. 58r), blue or mauve with white filigree against gold ground thinly edged in black. Initials filled with stylized leaves, blue and mauve with white filigree. Black inkspray with spiky gold leaves and small blossoms in pink or blue extend into the margins to form partial borders. Numerous small initials, 2-line, gold, on mauve and blue ground with white filigree. Running headlines in red and blue; headings in red. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Initials stroked with pale yellow., and Binding: Eighteenth century, England or France. Bound in olive green goatskin gold-tooled with a "broken cable" border and decorated edges. In Italian., Script: Text written in a well formed humanistic bookhand by a single scribe; the rubrics, in majuscules, by another scribe who used excessive punctuation., The decoration is by Gioacchino de' Gigantibus. A gold initial, 5-line, on f. 1r embedded in white vine ornament, extending into sides, top, and lower margin, filled in with green, red, and blue, with small section at regular intervals filled with gold; a green bird near the initial; in lower margin, an empty laurel wreath supported by putti filled later with a coat of arms (unidentified) in pen, now effaced; a few gold dots with hair-spray in brown ink. Other initials, gold, 5- to 4-line, on ff. 7r, 93v, 106v, 126r, 161v, in same manner, but with gold infilling., Significant stains in margins of first few leaves., and Binding: Eighteenth century. In Latin., Numerous pen and ink initials of good quality, 8- to 3-line, drawn in red. The initials are constructed of thick vine stems, divided in half and swelling at the ends, issuing sprouts of intertwining stylized foliage. On f. 10v the letter E is formed from a bird and its extended wing; on ff. 75r and 103r the initials terminate in animal heads. The most important initials, ff. 1v, 13r, 36v, 62r, 75r, 114r, 115v and 119v, are touched with patches of ochre and summary modelling in the same color. On f. 1v the continuation capitals are filled in with red and ochre. Plain initials and headings in red. Remains of instructions to the rubricator along outer edge perpendicular to text (e.g., ff. 119v, 120v)., and Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides that have been covered with tan paper; edges spattered blue-green. Two gold-tooled labels on spine, the first left blank and the lower one reading "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 153, 159, and 197, also from the Cisterican abbey of Hautecombe.

From left corners penwork sprays issuing forth into inner margin, with blue and red blossoms and green leaves. Plain initials, placed between vertical rulings, alternate blue and red, some omitted., and Binding: Sixteenth century, Italy. Backs of quires cut in V's. Brown goatskin case faintly blind-tooled with concentric frames and spiralling dragon motifs that incorporate flowers and long beaked birds. Rebacked.

Marginal and interlinear annotations in less formal scripts., 8 large initials, 10- to 7-line, of poor quality, pink against gold ground thickly edged in black, filled with stylized foliage, green, orange, and yellow on blue ground. Foliage serifs, pink, blue, orange and yellow with white filigree extending into margins to form partial borders. Gold balls, thickly edged in black. Numerous small initials, 5- to 3-line, pink against gold ground edged in black, filled with stylized foliage, orange and yellow on blue ground. Numerous flourished initials, 2- to 1-line, alternate in red and blue with brown or red penwork. Headings in red by at least two rubricators. Paragraph marks in blue for chapters in tables preceding each book; in red and blue for text., Folio 1r damaged with some loss of text. Most of the decoration is badly rubbed and stained., and Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Brown leather case, blind- and gold-tooled. Title (citing portion of table of contents for Book II, f. 1r) on spine: "De institutis/ antiquis/ de disciplina/ militari/ de iure" and "Triumphandi".
