In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Piccard Ochsenkopf I.731-35., Script: Written in a cursive minuscule script, above top line; the first words of each chapter in large gothic bookhand., One initial, divided red and blue, 5-line, with red penwork flourishes, f. 1r; the initial may have been retouched by a contemporary hand. Plain red initials throughout; spaces for rubrics left unfilled, except for those at beginning of each book. Running headlines in red. Guide letters for decorator., and Binding: Nineteenth century, Germany. Quires cut in for sewing. Rigid vellum case with a red, gold-tooled label: "P. Diacon. De Gest. langobar". Early title in ink on fore edge: "De Gest. Longobardo".

"Tipu Sultan (left) gallops (right to left) past Cornwallis who is seated in an ornate chair on the back of an ill-drawn elephant. Tipu, rising in his stirrups, excretes a blast which displaces a boy-mahout on the elephant's neck and strikes Cornwallis. He says, "Now my Lord I'll Tip you the Swamps". The horse excretes a blast directed at the elephant's eye. The elephant, raising its trunk, says, "I wish I could run as fast as he how i would thump him." Cornwallis, with his sabre raised above his head, his left fist clenched, says, "These Monsoons are more Violent than ever I knew them before Boy turn back again." The boy says, "Yes my Lord I am going backwards Pr force." Behind Cornwallis's seat is a box inscribed 'Rice for Gruel during the Monsoons'. Contemporary manuscript copy signed J. Tapner [John?]. Two epistles in heroic couplets, each with an Argument and extensive prose notes keyed to line numbers, of descriptions of flora, fauna, cuisine, arts and architecture, and anecdotes on religion, customs, and history. Epistle I includes discussion of: the "riches of the Kingdom of Madura under its Hindoo Kings;" the "magnificence and sanctity of the Pagodas;" the "strong resemblance between the Hindoo and Egyptian deities." Epistle II includes: "Eulogy of Trimul Nag King of Madura before the Conquest and Division of that Kingdom by the Tartars" and other anecdotes about his palace, wives, and reign; descriptions of the Royal Gardens; "Transition to the present happy situation of the Carnatic under the British Government;" a "hint of what remains to be done for the prosperity of India;" and praise for Lord Macartney for giving "a system of life which tun'd to harmony a land of strife." Notes refer to various East India Company officials including Lords Clive and Hastings, and quote from letters by other "high persons" to Macartney
