"From the bustle and life visible on all sides it would seem that the period is fair-time, when the rustics and agricultural population of the vicinity in general flock into the town, holiday-making. A travelling mountebank has established his theatre in the market place; the person of the ingenious charlatan is decked out in a fine court dress, with bag wig, powder, sword, and laced hat complete, the better to excite the respect of his audience; he is holding forth on the marvellous properties ascribed to the nostrums which he is seeking to palm off on the simple villagers as wonder-working elixirs; while his attendants, Merry Andrew and Jack Pudding, are going through their share of the performance. One branch of the mountebank physician's profession was the drawing of teeth; an unfortunate sufferer is submitting himself to the hands of the empiric's assistant. The rural audience is stolidly contemplating the antics of the party, without being particularly moved by Dr. Botherum's imposing eloquence, these vagabond scamps being frequently clever rogues, blessed with an inexhaustible fund of bewildering oratory, and witty repartee at glib command. Leaving the quack, we find plentiful and suggestive materials to employ the humourist's skilful graver scattered around. In the centre, a scene of jealousy is displayed; the beguilements of a portly butcher are prevailing against the assumed privileges of a slip-shod tailor, who is seemingly tempted to have recourse to his sheers, to cut the amorous entanglement summarily asunder. On the left, the promiscuous and greedy feeding associated with 'fairings,' is going busily forward, and on the opposite side are exhibited all the drolleries which can be got out of a Jew pedlar, his pack, the diversified actions of customers he is trying to tempt with his wares, and the bargains for finery into which the fair and softer sex are vainly trying to beguile the cunning Hebrew on their own accounts. It seems probable that Rowlandson in his print of Doctor Botherum may have had a certain Doctor Bossy in his eye, a German practitioner of considerable skill, who enjoyed a comfortable private practice, said to have been the last of the respectable charlatans who exhibited in the British metropolis. This benevolent empiric, as Angelo informs us, dispensed medicines and practised the healing art, publicly and gratuitously on a stage, his booth being erected weekly in the midst of Covent-Garden Market, where the mountebank, handsomely dressed and wearing a gold-laced cocked hat, arrived in his chariot with a liveried servant behind. According to the old custom, the itinerant quack-doctor, with his attendant gang, was as constant a visitor at every market-place as the pedlar with his pack."--Grego

"A theatre seen diagonally from the pit, with the stage on the right, two side boxes forming a background. On the stage a man in quasi-classical dress holds a dripping dagger, a woman lies at his feet; through an open door the prompter is seen. The audience is much disturbed: in the foreground a stout citizen holds a smelling-bottle to the nose of his (apparently) fainting young wife; she takes a note from a young man on the bench behind her. "A procession of characters riding fantastic velocipedes (see British Museum Satires No. 13399), in profile to the right, each an isolated figure, arranged in two rows divided by a horizontal line. Each machine is an appropriate object mounted on two wheels. [1] 'The Aldermans Hobby'. Fat, drink-blotched, and with gouty legs, he rides a turtle. [2] 'The Sailors Hobby'. He vigorously rides an anchor, despite a wooden leg. He has a pugnacious expression, and a long pigtail. [3] 'The Jews Hobby'. He has a beard and rides a bag of 'Old Clothes'. [4] 'The Doctors Hobby'. A very thin apothecary, a medicine-bottle in his pocket, rides a 'Mortar', using the pestle as a steering-rod. [5] 'The Ireishmans Hobby'. Manuscript diary in the hand of Henry Ridinger, 1878-1882. Ridinger describes his work as a herder in Colorado, landscapes and topography in Colorado, Navajo settlements, working in the hay trade, a shooting and arrest in Colorado, and his travel through Kansas to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Ridinger describes life with a group of Osage, including the construction of buildings, hunting, fishing, agriculture, and Osage funerary and religious ceremonies. Ridinger also records his interactions with other tribes, including Pawnee, Cherokee, Ute, and Waco. He describes relations and treaties between the tribes, as well as the tribes' relations with the United States government, including the disbursement of food and clothing. Other passages describe copies of earlier treaties with France and Spain which the tribes showed Ridinger. A later entry describes the aftermath of the United States Army burning a Jewish settlement in Oklahoma in 1881 and The diary also includes an essay about the history of Native American treaties with the United States government and several pages of accounts listing expenses and sales of hay, wheat, and corn. The diary includes several drawings of people, horses, insects, dogs, and symbols. Accompanied by 3 photographs, one hand-colored portrait of Henry Ridinger, one of an unidentified woman, and one of a man and woman captioned "Uncle Sam [Ridinger] with his sweetheart who died."

Henry Ridinger (1851-1938) was born in either Iowa or Illinois in 1851. His family moved to Kansas in 1857 and he left home at the age of 11, circa 1862. He worked as a cattle herder and hay farmer in Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma for several years in the 1870s and 1880s. He later became a hay farmer in Lincoln County, Nebraska, circa 1885., In English., and Front and back covers are detached.
