"Prince Leopold sits enthroned, flanked by his new subjects; he wears uniform with a crown, and sits on a two-tiered circular dais in a chair of state, the seat of which is covered with giant thorns. Punctured and frightened, he grasps the arms of his chair with crisped fingers; his toes are drawn back, touching the ground, and he looks towards a savage-looking Greek (right) who kneels before him with a long knife held behind his back. A similar ruffian kneels on the left; others approach menacingly from the left, one smoking a long pipe and grasping a knife. They wear Greek costume with embroidered jackets and full white breeches. On the right are long-robed ecclesiastics, headed by a bearded patriarch with a cross in one hand, a knife in the other."--British Museum online catalogue
"The Duke (left) and Duchess of St. Albans stand facing each other; the little Duke staggering under an ornamental basket which supports a side of bacon, inscribed Best Wiltshire. The Duchess holds on her shoulder a cutter in which are seated six oarsmen with oars held erect, and a helmsman. The Duke is dressed as Grand Falconer (see British Museum Satires No. 15596) and wears a hood with bells indicating both a fool's cap and the hood and bells of falconry. Two speeches float from his head: [1] "In love connubial, formed to live and last, This gift records a blissful twelvemonth past We claim, then boldly claim the flitch Dunmow First of the blest, who keep the marriag Vow". [2] I thought the flitch to small a present on this auspicious day so I have brought the Gammon with it Love. The Duchess answers: Thanks for your Bacon Duke well have you Saved it - and in return accept of this small Testimony of my affection. She wears Court dress, coronet, and feathers. The boatmen wear yellow and green liveries, and on the prow is a falcon's head; the back of the seat in the stern is decorated with a falcon perched on a melon resting on a heap of sovereigns. In the foreground are spectators: on the left the Dukes of Cumberland (wearing his hat) and Sussex stand together with Prince Leopold behind them; on the right is Sir Francis Burdett (son-in-law of Coutts), very thin, surprised, and displeased. In the background are other spectators, their heads concealed by the boat, and on the right a group of singers, some in Tyrolean costume, with (?) "Duchess of Kent sits regally on the throne, holding the orb, and turning her head to watch Princess Victoria, who sits (left) on Prince Leopold's knee, holding the sceptre (in the form of a hand of Justice, cf. BM Satires No. 12247) and with the crown half-extinguishing her little head. He wears uniform, sits on a lower seat, but with his right foot on a footstool. He holds out twin cherries to the child, saying, 'Now we'll play at Bob Cherry--open your mouth'. On a table (left) are Sweet Meats and Sugar Candy, on the floor a (mature) doll. On the right, framed by pillars, is the Council Chamber. Wellington presides, in the royal chair, turning arrogantly to say: 'As president of the Council--who shall gainsay me--' [Bathurst was Lord President of the Council]. Behind him Grenadier Guards with fixed bayonets stand at attention. Inconspicuously at his right hand, and below the dais, sits William IV. "In a room at the Pavilion Prince Leopold is introduced to Princess Charlotte, a bashful girl holding a skipping-rope in her gloved hands. She is pushed forward by Queen Charlotte (right), lean, ugly, and wearing court dress with a tiara. The Queen holds a large snuff-box inscribed 'Strasbo[urg]' (see British Museum Satires No. 12066) and says: "Go along Scape grace speak kindly to him." The Regent in the doorway on the extreme left propels the prince forward with the end of a crutch, using the other as a support to his gouty left leg. He says: "Courage Man! don't be bashfull!" A garter inscribed 'Honi soit' holds up the bulky covering of his gouty leg. Prince Leopold wears a braided and fur-bordered hussar tunic with tight pantaloons and spurred Hessian boots. His left hand is on the hilt of a large sabre, and he holds his heavily plumed and tasselled shako before his face. He says: "Madam I have no money, but I'm of the right breed, true German, an blood Royal." The Princess answers: "I had rather you was English! but a German husband is better than none." Both stand with flexed knees and lowered eyes. Behind Princess Charlotte is a much-festooned window looking on to the sea. Dragons dominate the decorations of the room, and, as in British Museum Satires No. 12754, the Regent's crutches. They support the curtains, a window-seat, and a console-table (right) where a large china mandarin sits with his back reflected in a wall-mirror; below it is a large Chinese jar. "Prince Leopold (right), in uniform, puts his head through a glassless aperture in a window in the door of his 'Grecian Establish[ment]--Co[burg]', to look intently at a fat Turk who stands in profile to the right, elaborately dressed and holding a long pipe with smoking bowl. The door, partly cut off by the right margin, is flanked by a Corinthian pillar and set in a wall on which are placards: 'This . Shop!!! will shortly open under entire new Management--Vivant [sic] Rex'; a Union Jack poster (partly covered); the Russian eagle, and a fleur-de-lis, the two last inscribed 'Loan'.
