Abstract:
"A man standing, whole length, in profile to left, with an auctioneer's hammer in his right hand, a taper or candle in a stand in his left. He is elegantly dressed in a laced coat, cravat, and ruffled shirt."--British Museum online catalogue and "Except for the exaggerated macaroni wig and an accentuated nose the portrait is hardly a caricature. It evidently represents Abraham Langford (1711-74) of the Covent Garden Auction Rooms, the leading auctioneer at this time."--Curator's comments, British Museum online catalogue
