"Spectators watch military manoeuvres in the air. The sky is covered with camps, marching men, and galloping cavalry, some are in military formation, others are single figures. There are tents and marquees with wings; a man beats a drum, three orientals wearing turbans race through the air beating cymbals. In the foreground (left) spectators on horseback look up in amazement, one horse throws its rider; geese, goslings, and pigs are under the horses' feet. On the right the King and Queen sit together on a bank; the King gazing through a small telescope, the Queen looking at him with delighted astonishment. An officer with a high plumed hat and in the uniform of the St. James's volunteer sits on thin, tired-looking horse in a parade ground. He holds only one of the horse's reins and a drawn sabre over his right shoulder. Despite his attire, his demeanour is unmilitary, his posture and facial expression languid. A crowd of people watch from a pavilion in the background on the left and from behind a paling on the right. A small audience sitting on benches on a tribune next to the equestrian statue of Cosimo I de' Medici in Piazza della Signoria, watching a military parade of the guards of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorena (1765-1790), son of the Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg and brother of Joseph II.
