"Napoleon, pushing an officer before him through a pillared doorway, looks back to speak to a monk and a sansculotte, shackled together, who drag a car in which is an imperial crown. They hold a large scroll inscribed: 'Most religious Sovereign - the benefactor of the church - the patron of liberty - the scourge of tyrants, and the defender of our most holy religion; may you long fill the Imperial Chair, and diffuse over a free and happy people all the blessings of your auspicious government.' Demons fly round a tricolour flag which floats from the car. Napoleon holds out a scroll headed: 'Address, &c. &c. &c. The Legions of France congratu - ', saying, "This token of your gratitude, my dear subjects will ever stimulate me to protect your liberties - to promote your happiness - and to preserve my empire from the ravages of war, tyranny and oppression." The officer, with a cynical smile, says: "Patron of Liberty - Defender of our most holy Religion - free and happy People - Ha! ha! ha! - What may we not expect? - Has he not got them under excellent subjection?" On the left is Napoleon's 'Secret Chamber': a table is covered with maps and plans; a large map, partly unrolled, shows Europe from '[En]gland to [Tur]key', including the 'Black Sea'; another map shows 'Suez' and the 'Red Sea'. A demon under the table holds up a large pile of papers: 'Plans against England'; on the floor are similar piles: 'Religion' and 'Treaties'. There are also 'Plans against Germany and Turkey', and a paper: 'Mem. the chance of the conquest of England is worth the sacrifice of one third of the people of France. Item. As Charlemaine not only conquered Italy, but the whole of Germany, and left the Imperial dignity hereditary in the Sovereigns of France, it is indispensably necessary to obtain possession of Germany, in order to support the dignity of the Gallic empire.' On the wall are three pictures: 'Sacking of Rome', 'Dissolution of the National Assembly' [see British Museum Satires No. 9426, &c], and 'View of Cairo' [see British Museum Satires No. 9358, &c.]. Below the design: 'Explanation. The two figures bringing the Imperial crown . . . represent . . . the bitter Enemies of Aristocracy, and the staunch Supporters of the late Monarchial Government, tackled to the National Machine, and reduced to the most abject State of Slavery by the Influence of the Military, whose congratulatory Address Bonaparte has received at the Hand of an Officer, and is introducing him into his Secret Chamber to receive Instructions. The Demons hovering over the Imperial Crown denote Five Years of Destruction; during which Period Bonaparte will overrun and ravage the greater Part of the Continent of Europe, be the Means of nearly depopulating Turkey, and finally be slain with the Sword, be cast out as an abominable Branch, and be left as Dung to rot on the Face of the Earth."--British Museum online catalogue

"Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, stands in the centre of the design, pointing with left forefinger to a pile of cannon-balls in the right foreground inscribed 'Forse, meat Balls for the Lads of Paris'. Just behind him, and emerging from clouds, stand the Devil (left) and Death (right), directing his actions. Napoleon is flanked by two much taller supporters: an Italian brigand holding up a pole inscribed 'Plunder' to which a limp purse is tied, and with a pistol in his left hand. On the right is a savage dishevelled butcher, holding up a knife, with a noose in the right hand. Both wear belted tunics. These three are identified by an inscription below the design: 'Capt of Starved Banditty from the Alps, Ad Camp,, The Aghast Emperor & his two Friends & Pillars of the State,, Butcher from Elba. Generalissimo'. All are dominated by a larger figure, emerging from clouds above Napoleon's head, which has a scaly body and streaming hair, styled 'Deamon of War Presideing over the Tyrant'. His extended right hand points to the words 'Boundless Ambition' in large letters on a background of fire and lightning of which he is the centre. In his left hand is the shaft of a pennant inscribed: 'We, Come, to Redres:s Grievances'. Dark clouds and lightning extend left and right over ranks of soldiers in the middle distance who watch Napoleon. Those on the right are a ragged, dilapidated, and motley crew, some with pitchforks; they shout "Vive la Empre . . . [sic]" and "Vive la Boun. . . ." "Napoleon bestraddles the globe, seated at the Pole, about half of it being between his legs; countries are marked, but without regard to geography. A little figure looks from behind the globe (right) below the conqueror's left toe; his left hand is placed on 'Old England', and he raises a sabre menacingly. Napoleon, a fine figure, wearing an enormous cocked hat, a sabre in his right hand, looks down at the little man, his left arm extended; he says: "Ah, who is it dares interupt me in my Progress." The little fellow answers: "Why 'tis I little Johnny Bull Protecting a little spot I clap my hand on, and d-n. me if you come any Farther that's all." He is a 'cit' with an ill-fitting wig. "The daughter of Count Platoff stands full face, erect, dashing, and alluring, on a snowy mound. Her right hand supports a spear from which floats a banner inscribed: 'I General Count Platoff. promise to give my Daughter in Marriage and 2000 Rubles - to any Cossack, Russian, Prusian, German, Sweede, Turk, John Bull, Sauny Bull Paddy Bull or any other Bull, who shall bring Me the Head of Little Bony dead or a live.' She wears fur-trimmed cap with a long hussar-bag, long high-waisted fur-bordered pelisse, with a cape, fur-trimmed boots, and large ear-rings. The words 'Hih "ho" for a Husband' issue from closed and smiling lips. With her left hand she points behind her to the right and to the little figure of Napoleon on skates, wearing a large plumed bicorne, and brandishing his sabre; he deserts his snow-bound army, saying, "O" ho" bygare I had best be Off." He strides past the heads of soldiers emerging from snow, together with bayonets, and a French flag; behind him the French army marches in close ranks, with one eagle and one flag. On the left is another column of tiny soldiers indicated by heads, bayonets, an eagle, and flags. In the clouds, airborne as in No. 11992 (British Museum catalogue), are two bands of galloping Cossacks, one (right) seems about to swoop down on Napoleon. Heavy clouds frame slanting rays which make a background for Platoff's daughter. At her feet are two money--bags both inscribed '1,000 Rubles', which disgorge coins. In French., Title from manuscript note in English at bottom of sheet., Possibly from 1806, the year that Hortense became Queen of Holland and the year of death for Richard Bull, who owned and likely assembled the album in which this poem was found., Formerly laid in at page 196 in an album containing 402 pages, bound in red morocco leather with single gilt ruled line; spine stamped in gold "Drawings." Now disassembled and matted separately: Bull, R. Scrapbook of drawings. [England], [not after 1806]., Housed in mylar sleeve matted to 49 x 37 cm., and Original case shelved separately.
"Three volunteers or militiamen, three-quarter length figures, exult at the head of Bonaparte which one of them (right) holds up on a pitchfork, saying, "Here he is Exalted my Lads 24 Hours after Landing." The head is in profile to the left, the sharp well-cut features contrast with those of the chubby yokels. The centre figure, holding out his hat, says, turning to the left: "Why Harkee, d'ye zee, I never liked Soldiering afore, but some how or other when I though [sic] of our Sal the bearns, the poor pigs, the Cows and the Geese, why I could have killed the whole Army my own Self." He wears a smock with the crossed straps of a cartouche-box. The third man (left) in regimentals, but round-shouldered and unsoldierly, says: "Dang my Buttons if that beant the Head of that Rogue Boney - I told our Squire this Morning, what do you think say's I the Lads of our Village can't cut up a Regiment of them French Mounsheers, and as soon as the Lasses had given us a Kiss for good luck I could have sworn we should do it and so we have." All three have hats turned up with favours and oak-twigs, the favours being inscribed respectively (left to right): 'Hearts of Oak'; 'Britons never will be Slaves', and 'We'll fight and We'll Conquer again and again'. In the spaces between these foreground figures is seen a distant encounter between English horse and foot and French invaders, who are being driven into the sea, on which are flat-bottomed boats, all on a very small scale. Two women search French corpses; one says: "why this is poor finding I have emtied the pocketts of a score and only found one head of garlic 9 onions & a parcel of pill Boxes." Cf. "Bonaparte (much caricatured), standing precariously on a 'Dutch Cheese', is attacked by the allies. Austria and Russia pull from his thin leg a large clumsy boot, consisting of a map of 'Italy'; coins (French plunder) pour from the boot, on which 'Naples', 'Rome', 'Florence', and other geographical divisions are indicated. Austria is a fierce hussar, smoking a pipe, on his cap is the Habsburg eagle; he tugs at the boot, the Russian bear (on the extreme left) assists him, its paws clasping his waist. A ferocious Turk holds Bonaparte by the nose and raises a scimitar whose blade, inscribed 'St Jean d'Acre', drips blood; across his shoulders are strung bleeding ears and noses to which Bonaparte's is to be added. A sailor (right), representing the British Navy, seizes Bonaparte from behind; in his hat are ribbons inscribed 'Nelson', 'Duncan', 'Bridport'. A fat Dutchman on the extreme right, with the blunt profile of the Prince of Orange, tugs at the cheese in order to dislodge Bonaparte; he kneels on a paper, 'Secret Expedition'. Bonaparte's uniform is ragged, his left foot is bare, but in each hand is a blood-stained dagger. In the background (right) tiny figures (probably Dutch) dance hand-in-hand round a bonfire in which burns a 'Tree of Liberty', a bonnet-rouge on a pole, cf. "Nicholas I, in uniform with plumed cocked hat, rides (right to left) a gigantic Russian eagle, his sword raised to slash. The eagle holds in one of its beaks a round wicker coop which it drops over a turkey crouching on a grassy slope (left). From each predatory beak a cloud issues, inscribed WAR in large elaborate letters. The heraldic bird is very much alive, one claw clutching a sceptre, the other an orb. The Tsar stands in his stirrups; his saddle is superimposed on the shield on the bird's breast on which is a mounted knight in armour with visor down and sword raised. To the shield are appended eagles and other emblems. Far below (right) is a snow-covered plain where tiny Cossacks gallop with levelled spears, chasing Turks, The sky is filled with flame and smoke from blazing buildings.
