"The interior of a carcass-butcher's slaughter-house, the carcasses of animals suspended from the wall. Through the doorway (l.) is seen a rock rising from the sea on which stands a bellowing bull; at the base of the rock is a British fleet. Napoleon, the butcher, with cleaver and knife, makes frantic efforts to reach the (distant) bull, but is restrained by Talleyrand who holds him round the waist. He wears top-boots, one inscribed '7 Leagues', with apron, and rolled-up shirt-sleeves, showing 'R T' [? 'Returned Transport'] branded on his left. arm. On one flap of Talleyrand's oddly shaped cocked hat is a cross, to indicate the ci-devant Bishop of Autun. The head of the Russian bear looks in at the door, gazing menacingly at Napoleon. In the foreground lies a bulky body from which head, hands, and feet have been chopped; to it is skewered a paper: 'Germanic Body'; the severed r. hand lies on a paper inscribed 'Hanover'. On the extreme left. is a round wicker cage surmounted by the Papal tiara, inscribed: 'From Rome and Not worth Killing'; it contains a fox and other small animals. On the extreme right. is a dog-kennel inscribed 'Prussia' and 'Put up to Fatten'; from it a lean greyhound on a short chain puts out its head to lap greedily at a trough of 'Consular Whipt Syllabub'. Behind this is the butcher's block, on which lies a cleaver; blood drips from it into a receptacle inscribed 'Treasury'. Behind Napoleon, in a trough inscribed 'Jaffa Cross Breed', are the bodies of six turbaned Moslems; blood gushes from the trough into a tank inscribed 'Glory'. On the wall hang carcasses, &c. (l. to r.): a ram ticketed 'True Spanish - Fleec'd'; a bleeding calf's head, a simian creature with a tail labelled 'Native Breed'; an ass, ticketed 'From Switzerland', a bloated pig 'From Holland'. Below the title: 'New Style - No Quarter Day!' The verses are a dialogue between 'Boney and Talley' on the possibilities of plunder and conquest. "The Russian bear (left), standing on its hindlegs on the edge of a narrow stream, 'The Vistula', holds Napoleon in its forepaws. Talleyrand steps out of the stream on to the further bank (right), blowing a trumpet from which issues a billowing cloud on which he writes a dispatch with a large pen. The upper waters of the stream are inscribed 'The Bug'; a placard on a post in the water is inscribed: 'Hic Jacet - Snug - in the Bug - several thousand of the Great Nation.' The bear says: "Hush a bye! Hush a bye! take it all quietly - you'll soon find yourself as Snug as a Bug in a Rugg". Napoleon, gesticulating wildly towards Talleyrand, says: "Oh D----n the bug. I wish I had never seen it. My Dear Talley - dont tell my faithfull subjects the true state of my Situation - any thing but the truth my Dear Tally. Oh this cursed Russian Bear how close he hug me." Talleyrand, his back to his master, answers, "Leave me alone for a Bulletin." Two clouds issue from his trumpet: the smaller and darker rises: '7,000 Prisoners, 3000 drowned, 12 Eagles taken, 6,000[?] Killed.' The other cloud descends, on it Talleyrand has written, his pen by the final word: 'For Paris Grand Bulletin The august Emperor of the great Nation, informs his faithfull and beloved Subjects, that having performed Wonders on the banks of the Bug. he has now closed a glorious campaign for the season, and retired with Ease and Comfort into Winter Quarters - '. He wears a mitre, bag-wig, a gown over his suit kilted up by a girdle from which swings a rosary and an ink-pot resembling a bowl for holy water. His right leg has a bowed shin, and his shoe is raised on blocks. On the ground by the bear are Napoleon's large bicorne and sword. Behind (left) is part of the façade of a 'State Prison', surmounted by a Russian Eagle, and inscribed 'Prisoners of War.' The races of French prisoners are pressed against heavily barred windows. "Napoleon bursts out of a terrestrial globe on which a map is freely sketched. One leg is still below the surface; he puts the other on the 'East-Indies' close to 'Bengal'. He is astounded to find himself face to face with John Bull (right) who also emerges from the globe, a half length figure with a huge cudgel in his right. hand. From John's coat-pocket project papers: 'Secret Intelligence'. Napoleon in his dismay drops his sword and a 'Plan of Operations in the Eas [sic] Indies'. He says: "Begar Monsieur Jean Bull again! Vat - you know I was come here!" John answers: "To be sure I did - for all your Humbug deceptions I smoked your intentions and have brought my Oak Twig with me, so now you may go back again." "The little King of Rome sits in his cradle, between the proudly protecting arms of Marie Louise, who kneels behind him. The infant has an adult head resembling that of his father, and a tail; he wears a replica of Napoleon's cocked hat. He holds out his arms to Napoleon, who sits by the fire, holding out a napkin to dry. The Emperor looks fondly at the child, saying, "Rejoice O ye Frenchmen, the Fruits of my Labour has produced a little Image of myself, I shall for the love I owe to your Country instill in my Noble Ofspring the same principles of Lying thieving treachery Letchery Murder and all other foul deeds for which I am now Worshipped and Adored". Behind and between the Emperor and Empress, a bishop (? Cardinal Fesch) kneels over the infant, his hands folded as if in prayer; he repeats the words of Henry VI to Gloucester before his murder by the latter: "The Owl shriek'd at thy Birth, an evil Sight. The Night Crow cry'd foreboding luckless Time. Dogs howl'd and hideous Tempests shook down Trees. The Raven rook'd her on the Chimney Top And chattering Pies in Dismal Discord sung." ['3 Henry VI', v. 6.] On the fire (left) boils a saucepan inscribed 'French Blood'; little demons ascend in the steam rising from it. The mantelshelf is supported by carved demoniac creatures, one having a satyr's head, the other that of a Fury with snaky locks. A similar creature supports the bars of the grate. On the mantelshelf are imperial crowns, the iron crown of Italy (as in British Museum Satires No. 10432), and a papal tiara. The cradle has a crown at the head, and at the foot a grotesque mask inscribed 'Devils Darlind' [sic]. Behind (right), a lady, evidently Josephine, sits up in bed, holding a wine-glass; she looks towards the child quoting Ophelia's words: "Ah Woe is me, seeing what I have seen and seeing what I see". Near her stands an ugly old nurse, holding a syringe; an infant's chair is beside her; it is ornamented with a crown and inscribed 'Prince Skinny Boneys Caching Chair'. "Scene in an English court of law. The judge, Blücher, wearing a legal wig with regimentals, stands up with left arm extended, addressing Napoleon, who crouches in the dock (right), handkerchief in hand, pleading for mercy. Beside the judge are the sovereigns of Europe, two on his right, three on his left, all gazing at the prisoner. In the well of the court aged and grotesque counsel, typical of Rowlandson's lawyers, surround the green-covered table. The jury (left) have stupid, morose, or astonished expressions. The usher, with a long rod, seated on a raised chair, faces the jury on the opposite side of the court. Corpulent constables with staves stand beside and in front of the dock. Freely sketched spectators look down from a crowded gallery above the dock. Almost all eyes are on the prisoner, behind whom stand the Devil, with folded arms, fiercely gloating over his victim. Behind the usher is a high white screen on which Napoleon's offences are inscribed: 'NAPOLEAN BONAPARTE The first and last by the Wrath of Heaven Ex Emperor of the Jacobins & head Runner of Runaways [see British Museum Satires No. 12192], Stands indicted 1ts [sic] for the Murder of Captain Wright in the Temple at Paris 2d for the murder of the Duke Dangulem [d'Enghien] Pichegrew & Georges 3 for the Murder of Palm Hoffer &c & 4th for the murder of the 12 inhabitants of Moscow 5th for inumerable Robberies committed on all Nations in Christendom & elsewhere, 6th for Bigamy & lastly for returning from Transportation, and setting the World in an uproar.' Blücher says fiercely: "You Nap Boneparte being found Guilty of all these Crimes it is fell to my lot to pronounce Sentence of Death on You--You are to be hung by the Neck for one hour till you are Dead, Dead, Dead, & your Body to be chained to a Mill Stone & sunk in the Sea at Torbay." Napoleon says: "Oh cruel Blucher, Oh! cruel Wellington it is you that have brought me to this End. Oh Magnanimous Emperors Kings & Princes intercede for me and spare my life; and give me time to attone for all my Sins, My Son Napoleon the Second will reward you for Mercy shewn me." The sovereigns are poorly characterized. On the extreme left is Alexander, next him and on Blücher's right is the Prince Regent. On Blücher's left is Louis XVIII. The sudden entrance, through the window, of Napoleon Bonaparte startles tailors assembled in their shop, i.e., the European rulers at the Congress of Vienna, busy "cutting out" portions of Europe for themselves. With a blood-dripping sabre in his hand, Bonaparte declares his readiness to join them in this activity. To his left, a startled King of Holland moves toward the Austrian Emperor, shown with a pair of small scissors and an iron in his hands, who is Napoleon's father-in-law and whom the deposed French Emperor asks, "Where is my wife and son, father Francis?" Beside Francis I, the Russian Emperor stands on a large piece of cloth lined with "Polish fur," raising in his left hand a knot made out of the measuring tape. On the opposite side of the workbench, a fierce-looking Prussian general Blücher threatens Napoleon with huge shears. Behind him, the King of Prussia, sitting cross-legged, continues sewing a piece of cloth signed, "Pattern of an Emperors Robe." To his right stands Napoleon's former marshal, Bernadotte, now allied against him as the Crown Prince of Sweden. In the middle of the room, a frightened and helpless-looking King of France lies flat on the floor, consoled by John Bull, with a large club, who promises to sew up "that rascal Boney." Behind John Bull, a terrified Pope scrambles away for the safety, his tiara and cross fallen to the ground. On the other side of Louis XVIII, the French negotiator at the Congress, Talleyrand, attempts to hide under the tailors' bench
