A burlesque of the trial of O'Connor at Maidstone (22 May), parts of the court being hidden by the large labels which issue from the mouths of prisoner and witnesses. The presiding judge (Buller) looks down with horror at the witnesses, the other judges are hidden. O'Connor (not caricatured), wearing leg-irons, stands at the bar; his hands are clasped, and he bends forward in profile to the left, making a confession which, though condensed, does not differ substantially from that made by him, McNevin, and Emmet, and published in the Report of the Secret Committee made to the Irish House of Commons on 21 Aug. ('Lond. Chron.', 27 Aug.), ... 'I confess, that I became an United Irishman in 1796 & a Member of the National Executive, from 1796, to 1798. I knew the offer of French assistance was accepted at a meeting of the Executive in Summer 1796: I accompanied the Agent of the Executive (the late Lord Edward Fitzgerald) ...had an interview with General Hoche (who afterwards had the command of the expedition against Ireland) on which occasion every thing was settled between the parties with a view to the descent. ... Charles Fox, with a fox's body, sits on the ground facing a building inscribed, "The Treasury," with the entrance signed, "Back door." He laments the loss of power and his inability to "get oer this mighty Pit [i.e., William Pitt]" shown as a large oval hole in the ground in front of him. Six geese stand on the other side of the 'pit' ridiculing him. A reference to the struggle between Pitt and Fox in Parliament prior to its dissolution

"A colossal but life-like bust of Napoleon is placed on a mound of decollated human heads. He gazes fixedly upwards in profile to the left; round his neck and bare breast is twisted a noose of rope. Round this idol dance demons with human heads, holding hands. They are naked except for head-coverings, and have horns, hairy legs, tail, with one leg terminating in a cloven hoof, the other in the claw of a bird of prey. These 'Hell Hounds' have labels hanging from a collar of rope, showing that they are 'Caulincourt', 'Fouché', 'Savory', with a pen in his hat (he succeeded Fouché as Minister of Police in 1810), 'Vandamme', 'Davoust', 'Ney', 'Lefebre'. Two demons fly towards the emperor, holding a large wreath which is on fire, with the inscription 'He Deserves A Crown of Pitch.' This they are about to place on the idol's head, towards which gallops through the air a small demon (right) on a goat, blowing a horn. In the foreground lie dead and dying soldiers, one is decapitated, another (right) is naked and has lost an arm which he holds out with an agonized expression towards the idol. "John Bull stands on a stone on tiptoe under a tree, a rope round his neck attached to a branch of the tree. He holds the rope with both hands, to prevent strangulation. On the right stands a Frenchman (France) holding out a leek to John Bull, between them is a stream or river. John Bull is a moderately stout man with a thick neck, wearing an ill-made bob-wig, not the characteristic John Bull of later satires, who had already appeared, see British Museum Satires Nos. 5611, 5612. From each post a horizontal beam projects to support a signboard, in each case that of a crown. In England this is in place, and has the inscription 'Good Entertainment for Man & Horse'; two Frenchmen standing on the opposite side are pulling at the English sign with ropes. They stand on the sign of the (French) crown which has already been cut down. They are assisted by Tom Paine who sits astride the horizontal bar to saw it through, but leaves his saw in the wood to stare in terror at a large bill, posted on the house from which the sign projects, and inscribed: 'Association for preserving Liberty & Property against Republicans and Levellers Resolved. . . '. He exclaims, "Here's a Stop to my Levelling." He is dressed in a slovenly manner and from his pocket protrude 'D Priestley Sermon' (see British Museum Satires No. 7887, &c.) and 'Rights of Man' (see British Museum Satires Nos. 7867, 8137, &c). "A melancholy man wearing night-cap and slippers sits facing an empty grate (right), his feet on the fender, supporting his head on his hand. He is beset by demons, figments of the mind, who are mostly miniature human beings. One stands on the back of his neck holding up a noose which is attached to a projection from the solitary candle on the chimneypiece, which is burnt to the socket. Another, swinging himself from the chimneypiece, offers an open razor. One standing beside the grate commits suicide, a pistol to each ear, glaring at his victim. A little gnome crouches behind the bars of the grate, to which is attached a begging-box with the notice Pray Remember the Poor Debtors [cf. British Museums Satires No. 13287]. In the fireplace is a placard: Mr--Dr to T Coke Coal Mert To 5 Chalds Wallsend . . To Do Chalds Wallsend To 3 Ch . . . £73. On the arm of the chair stands a top-booted bailiff tapping his victim's shoulder and proffering a writ. On the floor a procession walks (left to right) towards the victim, headed by a fat and pompous parish beadle with a tall staff. He is followed by three pregnant women, cloaked and bonneted (cf. British Museums Satires No. 14613, 15495). A lean old-fashioned doctor with a skull-like face hurries up behind them. Last runs a ghoulish creature with a coffin strapped to his back, holding a hammer. A monster with fanged mouth (gout) extends claws towards the victim's feet. On the floor at his side is an open book: Ennui. On a table (left) a mannikin sits on the foot of a reversed wine-glass, gleefully holding up an empty bottle and his hat. Beside him are papers: Bill for Payment Lies due at no . . . Two books on a wall-bracket form a platform for a similar creature who is gleefully painting at one of two pictures on the wall. His brush is a firebrand, a conflagration is depicted. The other picture is of a shipwreck. The books are: Miseries of Human Life [cf. British Museums Satires No. 10815, &c] (Folio) Vol. 2222 and Bucanns [Buchan's] Domestic Medicine.
