Abstract:
"Satire on fashion showing a crowd of people in St James's Park in front of Buckingham House. In the centre is a short, fat women wearing a large hooped skirt and saque, a lace cap and black lace mittens, and carrying a closed fan. On the left a young country gentleman, wearing a quilted waistcoat and holding a riding whip, is arm in arm with fashionably dressed man who seems to be showing him the promenade, they both wear breeches that end above the knee and high-heeled shoes with large tongues; the latter leers at a young woman, apparently a prostitute, wearing a straw hat with a soft brim who lifts her huge hooped skirt to reveal her ankle. She is walking with another young woman wearing a dark cloak with a hood; she wears a small cap and her hair is dressed in ringlets. In the centre, behind the fat woman, two men embrace, one of whom wears an eye patch. Another young woman, dressed in a similar fashion to the fat woman, stands to her right; behind her is another young woman wearing a hat with a very large brim. Next are two more young men,wearing large tricorne hats, tight coats the skirts of which open out in pleats below the waist, and high-heeled shoes one apparently pointing out matters of interest to the other who is possibly a young officer as he wears a sword and a cockade in his hat; his hair or wig is dressed in a large bag-wig. A view of the grounds of the Castle Park in Colchester (Essex) with tents erected for the celebration of the anniversary of the Sunday school. The tents, along the left side accommodate a series of booths, each equipped to feed the children in orderly queues. Against a background of trees along the perimeter of the lawns are groups of people strolling, walking dogs, or sitting with their own picnic baskets; they are apparently of the middle or better classes (judging by their clothes) looking on their objects of charity?

A very plump young woman in a bonnet stands in a park leaning forward into the wind ; her skirt is blown tightly around her backside and above her knees. Two foppish looking men eye her with amusement, the one using an eyeglass, the other holding his hat and wearing a long braided coat. Another couple on the right, struggle with an umbrella in the wind. Like the woman on the left, this woman's dress is also blown above her knees; her companion is dressed in wide trousers tied at the ankles. Between these two scenes, in the distance, a young woman walks along a rail toward the left struggling against the wind; a little black footboy follows her holding the hem of her skirt and her reticule. "An evening scene in Vauxhall Gardens. On the extreme left is the orchestra with the organ behind and performers on the kettledrums, string and wind instruments. The vocalist, Mrs. Weichsel, sings, in profile to the right, from the adjacent (and slightly lower) balcony, just above the heads of the crowd. A violinist and another musician are seated behind her. In the supper box beneath the orchestra is Dr. Johnson seated full-face, between Boswell and Goldsmith (d. 1774), who face each other in profile, both caricatured; of two stout women one is reputed to be Mrs. Thrale. Many groups fill the foreground and middle distance. The two centre figures are the Duchess of Devonshire and Lady Duncannon arm in arm. A naval officer with a wooden leg and a patch over one eye is reputed to be Admiral Paisley (Admiral Pasley, 1734-1808?). Major Topham, an excellent portrait, stands (left) in profile to the right staring through an eyeglass. Between Topham and the supper-box are two men, one of whom is identified as Lord Camelford. [In the reproduction in Angelo's 'Reminiscences'; to whom the name refers is not clear.] An elderly parson, [he closely resembles the parson of BMSat 7059 who is probably William Jackson of the 'Morning Post'] reputed to be Bate Dudley but not resembling him, gazes at the Duchess from behind a tree. Next him a man dressed as an officer in a Highland regiment with kilt and broadsword is supposed to be James Perry, editor of the 'Morning Chronicle'. On the right the Prince of Wales, conspicuous by his star, whispers to Mrs. Robinson (Perdita), though their liaison was ended. Her right arm is linked with an ugly and elderly little man, probably Robinson. On the extreme left an elderly couple advance arm in arm in profile. Behind the Prince is a group standing on a small platform (or tables), showing half length above the crowd. In the foreground (right) is a supper-table under trees where two cits entertain two courtesans. Lamp-lit trees and the covered way form a background on the right."--British Museum online catalogue
