"John Bull as a Chinese, in Chinese costume, hugely corpulent sits full-face in an arm-chair, legs extended, hands resting on the sides of his paunch. He looks to three doctors on the left, the foremost being Grey, who leans towards him, pointing to his colleagues (left), and saying suavely, 'This deformity is quite inconsistent, believe me, with the Nature of your Constitution & therefore must be got rid of, I will undertake with your approbation, to remove it & my assistant Doctor Russell here will prepare you for the Operation'. Lord John Russell, on the extreme left, speaks confidentially to Althorp who is in back view: 'I once thought that a case of this description ought to be treated with great caution and even wrote as well as talked a great deal about it, but now I am quite of a different opinion I think there is nothing like cutting away thro' thick & thin!' J. B.: 'I ca'nt say that my bodily health was ever better, or that I ever felt stronger tho' to be sure I am not growing younger; but then every one is telling me how deformed I am grown of late & this tumour which I have had from my infancy is all a Mass of Corruption'. On the right and slightly farther from the picture-plane, the rival doctors, Peel and Wellington, are in consultation. The Duke: 'I say the Man has no defect in his Constitution & that what they call corruption is necessary to his existance--but now because he would not believe me, but choses rather to submit to the experiments of these rash operators --Wharnecliffe who is a sensible Man lays all the blame on me'. Peel: 'Yet I begin to think we could have done better, when we found him determined to think that his Constitution was impaired, to have tried--just in the way of soothing, a gentle alterative Course'."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a variant state

"William IV (left), with a huge broom inscribed 'Public Opinion', sweeps away his Ministers who rush to the right in ignominious haste. His broom is against Wellington's posterior; the others (left to right) are Bathurst, Goulburn, Peel, Ellenborough, and Aberdeen. Behind them is a seventh who may be Londonderry (not an ex-Minister). Wellington: 'Oh Bob that it should have come to this, where shall we hide -- where can we go? --curse Don-Key's fee fa-fum' [see BM Satires No. 16303, &c.]. "The Devil, laden with Tories, strides to the left, quoting the Duke of Newcastle with a gloating grin: 'Can't I do what I like with MY OWN' [see BM Satires No. 15884, &c.]. Across his shoulder is a trident on which a bloated bishop is spiked. From the lower end of the handle a rat-trap (see BM Satires No. 15734), on which Peel sits, hangs by a rope. Wellington, encircled by the barbed tail, is dragged along, kicking violently. He is in uniform with spurred boots; a gibbet projects from his cocked hat. Under the Devil's arm are two lawyers: Wetherell in his slovenly dress, and Lyndhurst. The remainder are tied by ropes to the Devil's back; most prominent (left to right) are Ellenborough, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Croker. "Peel kicks a lean old watchman behind, and drags from his shoulders his patched and tattered coat. Just behind him (right) is a big bonfire in which a watch-box and battered lanterns are blazing; beside it lie more lanterns, a rattle, and staves. In the background a watchman hangs by the neck from the branch of a tree, still holding rattle and lantern. Beside the tree is a pond from which projects an arm clutching a rattle. Peel says: '"But such a poor, bare-forked animal as thou art--Off--off you lendings: come unbutton here vide Shaks--' ["Lear", III. iv]. The terrified watchman answers: '"Nay, take my life and all, pardon not that: You take my house, when you do take the prop That doth sustain my house; you take my life, When you do take the means whereby I live, vide Shaks.' "John Bull, fat and faint, lies back in an arm-chair with a deal table before him, left foot on cushion; he is in shirt and breeches. Round him are three doctors: Wellington (left), with the over-sleeve of a surgeon, holds a bayonet with which he is about to bleed the right arm over a bucket inscribed 'Pure British'. Peel (right), more insinuatingly, proffers a large bolus. Behind John's chair stands the King, saying, 'Patience Johnny'. Wellington, who wears blue frock-coat and white trousers, looks down at the patient through spectacles; he says: 'Come, Mr Bull, you are very plethoric--it is absolutely necessary that I phlebotomise you--you have a determination of blood to the head with strong symptoms of Choler!!!' Peel: 'Come, John, you must take this anodyne pill,--it will compose you "The ulcerous parts are only peel & skin I whilst deep corruption's mining all within" Pope' [sic]. On the table are a large pill-box inscribed 'Musket Balls', and a bottle labelled 'Black Dose Bitters' which stand on a paper: 'Prescription Taxation Decline of Trade National debt Want of Free Trade &c &c &c &c'. On the boarded floor is Wellington's syringe inscribed 'Injection of Injuries'. On the wall are a pair of pistols, 'Firing Irons', and a sabretache and bayonet inscribed respectively 'Pill Box' and 'Lancet'. J. "George IV, with a swathed and gouty leg, stands in front of the throne, supported by Lady Conyngham and a crutch, his arm round her shoulder. Peel stands partly hidden by a curtain and immediately behind Wellington, his mouthpiece; he speaks into a speaking-trumpet, the stem of which passes from Wellington's ear to his mouth from which the trumpet projects. From this mouthpiece issue the words: I feel happy in being allowed thro any medium, however degrading to communicate my expressions of sincere devotion TO-- The King interrupts him: PLACE--hat will do Arthur, always keep between me and that fellow -- he rings such a peil in our Ears. Lady Conyngham turns to the King, pointing to the trumpet: This is a contrivance of my own -- I hate the sight of him & now your M-y can keep him at a distance. "An ancient Gothic church in the middle distance stands on a grassy hill inscribed 'Protestant Ascendency'; under the hill (left) is a cave, 'Cave of Catholic Ascendency', in which are barrels of 'Gun . Pow[der]'. A fat bare-footed friar walks away from the cave towards the picture-plane, carrying a lighted candle, and slyly laying a train of powder on the road to the cave. Standing round the church is a crowd of country people, listening to a parson who holds out to them a 'Petition to Parliament'. They are unconscious, not only that the ground beneath them is mined, but that men (right) are tugging at a rope looped round the steeple, which is about to crash. The rope-pullers are in the foreground (right); at the extreme end is Wellington with his back to the church, straining hard. Next is Peel, wearing an orange waistcoat (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15690) badly stained by the rope; Brougham, a broom-girl dressed as in British Museum Satires No. 14769, is next, with Mackintosh in Highland costume beside him. In front of them is Burdett, very tall and thin, holding up his hat and shouting 'Down with it--never mind the People' [see British Museum Satires No. 16058]. In front is O'Connell, in wig and gown, shouting, 'By St Patrick I've got the Rope over at Last.' Behind these principals are more men, tugging at a second rope. On a green field topping a cliff behind the church-breakers is Eldon wearing a smock and guiding a plough; he turns to shout to the petitioners by the church, who will be crushed by the falling tower: 'Look to your selves People.' Along the horizon (left) is a Papist procession with lighted tapers, the Host, crosses, a grotesque Pope, and figures under a canopy. It approaches St. Paul's whose dome rises above the sky-line.
