Abstract:
Four images on one plate. Each represents a different trade or profession that is advertised in highly accented English by its representative, beginnig on top left with a schoolmaster, entitled, Iddicatshun: I Luke Lojick larns younge gintlemen to rade, rite and spale ackhording to the moste haproved greymares ... To the right is an image of a grave-digger, entitled, Hackhommydashun: Plese to tak notise I Paule Dismall, saxton and grieve-dagger, hundertaks to birry people ... Below on the left is an image of an aged quack, entitled, Fleabottomi: I the reale Doctor Bolus from Kork, aving studid fleabottomi, undertaks to opan vanes with hease and safty ... In the fourth image, entitled, Consort and bawl, an actor and singer advertises a benefit performance: For the binnifitt of Mister Milody, at the Toune All, will be given a consort and bawl, among hother hairs, duhets, trihos and koruses ...

"John Bull, corpulent, bald-headed, and stripped to the loins, is beset by leeches with human heads. They climb up his legs and attack his body, arms, and head. He stamps angrily, with clenched fists, saying, "This is Bleeding with A Veangence If I do not Shake off Some of these Leaches I shall not have a drop of Blood Left, why they will never be full & this is the third Set I have had on with in this three years or so. enough to Destroy the best Constitution." The King's profile projects into the design from the left. margin; he holds his spy-glass to his eye (as in British Museum Satires No. 10019, &c), saying, "Hard Work Indeed for poor Johnny How Voraicous I begin to think they will be too many for him I must Order Some of them off I see." Four leeches lie on the ground all inscribed 'Defaulter', followed by various sums: '300-000', '200-000', '400,000', [?] '500,000'. With these is a roll of 'New P . . . [? Pensions]'. "John Bull, fat and faint, lies back in an arm-chair with a deal table before him, left foot on cushion; he is in shirt and breeches. Round him are three doctors: Wellington (left), with the over-sleeve of a surgeon, holds a bayonet with which he is about to bleed the right arm over a bucket inscribed 'Pure British'. Peel (right), more insinuatingly, proffers a large bolus. Behind John's chair stands the King, saying, 'Patience Johnny'. Wellington, who wears blue frock-coat and white trousers, looks down at the patient through spectacles; he says: 'Come, Mr Bull, you are very plethoric--it is absolutely necessary that I phlebotomise you--you have a determination of blood to the head with strong symptoms of Choler!!!' Peel: 'Come, John, you must take this anodyne pill,--it will compose you "The ulcerous parts are only peel & skin I whilst deep corruption's mining all within" Pope' [sic]. On the table are a large pill-box inscribed 'Musket Balls', and a bottle labelled 'Black Dose Bitters' which stand on a paper: 'Prescription Taxation Decline of Trade National debt Want of Free Trade &c &c &c &c'. On the boarded floor is Wellington's syringe inscribed 'Injection of Injuries'. On the wall are a pair of pistols, 'Firing Irons', and a sabretache and bayonet inscribed respectively 'Pill Box' and 'Lancet'. J.
