"A press-gang at work in a London street, at the end of which appears the dome of St. Paul's. A sailor (center) strides towards the spectator, a club in his right. hand, dragging along a lean tailor, who holds up his hands in dismay. An infuriated woman (left) has seized the sailor by his hair and the right ear while she pummels him with her knee. Another sailor behind has seized her wrist and raises a club to strike her. A third sailor (right) holds the tailor by the left arm. A naval officer (right) walks beside the party with a drawn cutlass. Behind are other sailors. A woman (left) wearing stays or 'jumps' raises a mop in both hands to smite a sailor; an infant clutches her petticoats. A group of spectators (left) includes a woman carrying a baby. "The Duke of Clarence, in admiral's uniform, stands with his back to the sea, gazing upwards and to the left with a malignant stare; his right fist is clenched; in his left hand he clutches papers docketed 'Calu[mnie]s'. He declaims (adapting Satan's address to the sun, 'Paradise Lost', iv, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13896, &c.): "O thou that with surpassing Glory shine, "And in whose train the stars attendant wait, Of thee I speak, but with no friendly Voice, And add thy name O Cinthia to tell thee How I hate thy brightness!!!" He apostrophizes the moon, a disk in the sky enclosing a bust portrait of the Queen, on a dark ground patterned with large five-pointed stars which are partly covered by cloud (hiding 'their diminished heads'). In the sea behind is a man-of-war in full sail, the 'Queen Caroline' (left), firing a stern-shot at the Duke; she flies a large flag on which are the Royal Arms, with the motto: 'Honi. soit qui mal y pense', and two pennants: 'Vox Populi' and 'Victoria'. A ship's boat, the 'True Blue' (right), is rowed by sailors; the helmsman stands up to wave his hat and shout towards the Duke's back "The Queen for Ever!!!" One asks: "Jack is that a Sailor!" Another answers: "Da--n me if I know there's no English true blue about him!" Below the title: 'Our Duke and no Duke, what with looking so blue In his coat and his learning, and chastisement too; His tricks on such Ultra-top-gallant mast pinnacles, -- Pestering lieutenants and poking at binnacles; -- Ultra opinions, and ultra suggestions, Cross quips, and cross quiddits, and very cross questions; His going so far beyond all other sailors, In cutting up true-blues, to brush up with tailors; And doing what never was yet done by seamen, By crossing the line of all feeling tow-rds women; Has played such a part to discolour the Queen, That the wags have entitled him Ultra-Marine.'"--British Museum online catalogue

"Codrington, wearing the star of the Bath, sits on a gun-carriage on the deck of his ship, looking sternly up at an old scarred and pigtailed sailor who addresses him with an expression of consternation: Please your Honor's Glory there's something wrong in the wind, for they've clapt a Marine at the Helme of Old England, and He and the other lob lollies have made Sombody (God bless Him) to call our Glorious Victory an UNTOWARD EVENT And when they where told to belay their jawing tackel they shifted the wind and began to blow another way. Codrington answers Aye Aye Jack they or we must be fools. In his right hand is his sword, the point resting on the deck, the blade inscribed with Nelson's Trafalgar signal: England expects every Man to do his duty. He holds a document: Treaty of London. His back is to the sea where a rocky promontory (right) forms Wellington's profile, looking towards Codrington, a row of tiny gun-emplacements forming a grim smile (cf.
