Description:
Script: The main body of the manuscript (artt. 2-5) is copied by various hands in Gothica Cursiva Libraria/Currens. Art. 1 is in Gothica Cursiva Libraria (Bastarda); and art. 6 is in Gothica Cursiva Antiquior Libraria., Decoration: Limited; art. 1 is undecorated; artt. 2-6 contain red headings, stroking of majuscules, paragraph marks, and 2-line plain initials. There are three identical 15th century ownership inscriptions of the Salvatorberg Charterhouse, belonging to the Carthusians in Erfurt, Germany., Binding: Original undecorated red pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, sewn on four split leather thongs. There are remnants of two leather straps attached to the rear that would clasp to the front board by (now lost) pins. Five bosses on each cover., and In Latin.

In Latin., Script: copied by one hand in Northern Gothica Textualis Libraria. Ascenders at the top line are lengthened, thickened and indented and decorated with delicate penwork., Headings, underlining and paragraph marks in red. 2-line red plain initials, some filled with drawings of a human head; some are flourished initials with penwork in the same colour extending in the margin or in the intercolumnar space. The rubricator tends to place the short marginal notes in a red rectangular, diamond or leaf-shaped frame, or to link several notes on the same page by placing them in the loops of a curving line. Elegant pointing hands., and Binding: original binding: red leather over slightly bevelled wooden boards, sewn on five leather thongs, rebacked in white leather, the corners repaired with brown leather. Marks of two leather straps attached to the rear cover; holes of the iron pins on the front cover. Iron chain of nine elongated links and large round eyelet (length: 82 cm.), fixed to the top of the rear board by means of an iron staple.

Covers lined with parchment documents; text side pasted down and illegible. Covered in white tawed skin with two fastenings, the catches on the upper board. Remains of label with title on spine; traces of inscription on upper board. Rebacked.

Underlining of names of authors and of Biblical quotations, and initial strokes, all in red. Rubrics often lacking., Rodent damage in outer margins, from f. 68 on; no loss of text., and Binding: Fifteenth century. Original sewing on four tawed, slit strap supports laced through tunnels in the edge of flush beech boards to a groove on the inside and pegged. The spine is square, back cornered, and lined between sewing supports with stubs of vellum that extend on the inside of the boards (in front: partially visible document in Latin, written in 14th/15th-century chancery hand; in back: Missal, Germany, ca. 1150, initials in orange, with neumes, small format: part of a bifolium). Plain, wound endbands on tawed cores which sit on the spine. Covered in tawed (?) skin, originally white, with a small tab of a single layer of skin at head and tail. Five flower-shaped bosses on each board and two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board, and both boards cut in to accomodate the straps. Rodent damage, and all but two bosses wanting. Most quires reinforced in center with narrow strips of parchment, including portions of a leaf used for pen trials (15th century); and of an unidentified text written in batarde with a pen-and-ink drawing (15th century). On outside of upper cover, written in ink: "Super epistolis dominicalibus/ Sermo de preceptis".

In Latin., Script: Written in late caroline minuscule by several scribes, above top line., Plain red initials, 4- to 2-line, some with small pearls added to the body of the letter. Spaces for rubrics remain unfilled., Folios 1r and 158v stained with loss of text., and Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Backs of quires of both volumes cut in at sewing stations. Sewn on three cords. Paper lining between supports on spine. Red edges. Both volumes half bound in brown mottled calf with bright pink paper sides and two red gold-tooled labels on each volume: "Manuscr. Homiliae Caes. Max. Cod. I [and II]" and "Saecul. XIII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 151, 153, 158, 159 and 197, all of Hautecombe provenance.

In Latin., Written by three (?) scribes in small, neat Anglicana. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-145r, 174r-188v, rubrics and marginal notes throughout. Scribe 2) ff. 145r-173r. Scribe 3) f. 173v (traced over hand of Scribe 2?)., Crude 3- and 2-line initials in red, the initial on f. 1r with red flourishes. Many small initials not executed. Rubrics and paragraph marks in red, many missing or erased. Guide-letters for rubricator., Numerous folios were end pieces; corners and edges have been squared and straightened by adding pieces of coarse paper. Folio 84, very poor quality and thin at the center, was reinforced on verso (blank) with a strip of paper., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Tan calf over wooden boards, blind-tooled, with a red gold-tooled label "Manuscript." Earlier fastenings covered over. Boards detached.
