"Three officers stand stiffly at the bar at one end of a high panelled hall; through the open door behind them are seen steps leading to the Thames and one pillar of the south portico of Chelsea Hospital. Only the end of the long table (right) at which officers are seated is within the design, with four officers, two on each side, one holding a paper headed 'Charges'. A long label floats into the design from the right: 'Call William-Cobbett into Court, to make good his Charges!' An usher standing close to the accused, and looking through the wide doorway calls: "William Cobbett! William Cobbett!" Soldiers stand by the door, hat in hand, others are on the steps hailing a small boat with two occupants sailing across the river. One shouts: "Ho! William Cobbett". Cobbett, in the boat, shouts back: "Call away & be Damn'd--I'm off". Spectators, men and women, crowd the court; some are many rows deep on the farther side, some in a gallery over the wide-open doors. The heads and shoulders of others in back view in the foreground form a base to the design. Six men turn their heads in profile and Burdett and Derby are unmistakable. "Design in an oval. A travesty of the cameo known as the Marlborough Gem, now in the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston. The figures are light on a dark ground, as in the original. Miss Farren, tall, thin, with butterfly wings, her dress approximating to contemporary fashion, walks (left to right) on Lord Derby's left. He has the wings of Cupid, clipped, and is almost nude, with the fat limbs of a child together with a heavy paunch. He holds a dove, putting its beak to his lips. His scanty hair is in a small tail. Both are veiled. They are preceded by two winged boys, one with the torch of Hymen. A third follows, wearing a fool's cap simulating a cap of Liberty; he holds up an earl's coronet towards the bride, in place of the tray of fruit of the original."--British Museum online catalogue

"Pitt (left), as a toreador, rides a rearing white horse (of Hanover) with a spear directed horizontally against a buil (John Bull) snorting fire and bleeding from many wounds. He wears a short tunic and sash; his saddle-cloth is a leopard-skin on which is a crest: the white horse of Hanover enclosed in a Garter ribbon inscribed 'Honi soit qui mal y pense', and surmounted by a crown. He looks alarmed and spurs his horse viciously. Two tiers of spectators in an arc of the arena are freely sketched. In the upper row George III looking through a glass is in the centre, on his left is the Queen, on his right Loughborough. The man next the Queen is (?) Grenville. In the lower tier Fox is conspicuous with (?) the Prince of Wales on his left; Sheridan stands behind them. The other spectators are members of the Opposition or ragamuffins. "A scene in Carlton House. The Prince of Wales, seated in a chair, holds a stout, good-looking lady (Mrs. Sawbridge) across his knees and chastises her with upraised hand; she holds out her arms imploringly. Alderman Sawbridge (right) faces her in profile to the left, playing a fiddle and dancing; from his pocket hangs a piece of music inscribed 'The Reform', a new Motion. On the extreme left Lady Archer stands in profile to the right, holding a driving-whip, and pointing angrily at the injured lady. A little girl (Sawbridge) stands full-face, clasping her hands in horror at the treatment of her mother. Behind are a number of onlookers: a very fat lady in profile to the left is Miss Vanneck. Mrs. Fitzherbert watches, not displeased; Fox, his arm round her shoulder, gazes amorously at her. George Hanger stands in profile to the left. The other figures are less characterized but a profile head (right) resembles Lord Derby. On the wall (right) is part of a three quarter length portrait, the head cut off by the upper edge of the design, inscribed 'Sir G° Van-Ne[ck]'. Beside it is a stag's head on which hangs a man's hat, just above Sawbridge. After the title is etched 'A Hint for a new Reform'. "A scene from Act V of Murphy's play as performed at the private theatre of the Duke of Richmond at Richmond House, on 20 April 1787 and subsequently. Lovemore (Lord Derby) stands between Mrs. Lovemore (Mrs. Damer), who holds his right arm, and the Widow Belmour (the fat Mrs. Hobart). Beside the Widow, and on the extreme right, stands a very thin man dressed with exaggerated foppishness, his hat under his arm; he says, "As the man says in the Play your Lordship is right welcome back to Denmark". He is Sir Brilliant Fashion, played by the Hon. Richard Edgcumbe. Mrs. Damer says, "This is Lord Etheridge Madam", and Mrs. Hobart answers, "No Madam this is Lord Lovemore"; the speeches have been transposed by an engraver's error. In a stage box on the extreme left sit the Duke of Richmond and a lady (the Duchess?) holding an enormous muff, her high coiffure much exaggerated. The box is decorated with a group, two crossed cannon, lying on a plan of a fort, with a kettle-drum, surmounted by a laurel wreath, an allusion to Richmond's unpopular scheme for fortifying Portsmouth and Plymouth, see BMSat 6921, &c. The ladies have tiny faces, framed in elaborately dressed hair, which contrast with Lord Derby's large head. A draped curtain frames the stage; in the centre is the customary 'Veluti in Speculum'."--British Museum online catalogue
