"A bedroom scene. Lady Hamilton, grotesquely fat, but with traces of beauty in her features, rises from a curtained bed, arms and one leg extended in a burlesqued gesture of despair. She wears a nightgown and lace-trimmed cap. Behind her in the shadowed depths of the bed the night-capped head of her elderly and (?) sleeping husband, rests on the pillow. She looks, weeping, towards an open sash-window through which is seen a fleet sailing towards the horizon. In the window (left) is a cushioned window seat on which (besides a stocking) is an open book: 'Studies of Academic Attitudes taken from the Life'; on one page is a nude woman lying in sensual abandonment. On the right against the curtains of the bed is a dressing-table on which, besides toilet-articles, are a flask of 'Maraschino', a 'Composing Draught', and a pot of 'Rouge à la Naples'. On the carpeted floor (right) are objects from Sir W. Hamilton's collection, with an open book: 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Naples Caprea &c. &c.'; on the right page is a satyr chasing a nymph. They include an oval gem, a figure of a squatting monster, headless, the base inscribed 'Pri[apus]', a laughing bust of 'Messalina', statues of a Venus and a Satyr, coins or medals, one inscribed 'Ovid', another 'Tibertius'. In Latin and Italian., Script: Art. 3 copied by one hand in Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria. The title on the first front flyleaf (art. 1) is by another hand writing a bold Southern Gothica Textualis Formata (the same hand wrote the beginning of the alphabet on the facing pastedown). Art. 2 is copied by an unexperienced hand in Humanistica Cursiva Currens, but the date and the first line are by another hand writing Humanistica Cursiva Libraria., In art. 3 the opening letter of each lemma is a pale red 1-line capital projecting into the left margin. Each new alphabetical section begins with a 2- or 3-line capital alternately in red and blue (with a guide letter in the left margin), placed within the text area and followed by a black capital. Between the sections a space of two or three lines is left free., and Binding: Original brown leather over wooden boards (worm-eaten), spine with three raised bands; both covers blind-tooled with a frame of strapwork; in its interior two horizontal rows of quadrangular stamps at the top and at the bottom (a rosette and a Pascal Lamb) and a lozenge-shaped central part of the same strapwork. Five pointed brass bosses on each cover (together eight of them are preserved) and remnants of two clasps attached to the front cover by means of two nails with engraved heads; the quadrangular brass catches on the rear cover are engraved with a Pascal Lamb.

In Latin., Script: Two scribes: A copied ff. 1-31 in Southern Praegothica close to late Carolingian script; B copied the rest, starting with the text of Book 5 of Aeneis, in more rapid early Southern Textualis/Semitextualis; his spelling is marked by italianisms., The headings in red are not executed; some added later in Gothica Cursiva Formata (Cancelleresca); instructions for the rubricator are seen ff. 70v-75r. Numerous paragraph marks alternately in red and blue, sometimes black. Plain and flourished initials of various sizes in red and blue (other colours are also used in quires I-IV). Seventeen painted initials decorated with gold balls. From f. 70v onwards there are guide-letters, but all initials and other decoration are missing. A rectangular space of the width of one column was reserved for a miniature on f. 1ra, which was not executed., Ff. 1-31 appear to be palimpsest, with very irregular edges, sometimes repaired by sewing strips of parchment onto them, which are now lost., and Binding: Seventeenth century. White parchment over pasteboard. On the spine with five slightly raised bands red leather label with gold-tooled inscription "VIRGI-/LIUS / M.S." Two pairs of tunnels in the edges of the boards, and the supports laced into one or the other of them to channels in the outside and nailed. Partly resewn. Boards sharply bevelled, with the fore-edge bevel broken off the upper board. Quarter vellum binding, a later addition. Title in ink on lower board, partially visible under ultra-violet light: "Vita Vergilii [another word illegible]/ Documenta". Later title in ink on spine: "Varia man. scr./ vetera" and what appears to be a monogram or shelf-mark with letters I, F, O, T, H in ink on vellum addition.
