Description:
Sir Gilbert Dethick (1499/1500-1584), herald and diplomat. Dethick became Garter king of arms on 20 April 1550 and was knighted on 14 April 1551. He was genealogist and heraldist, and a member of the original Society of Antiquaries., In English, with one French phrase., Bound in red velvet, the arms are beautifully balzoned in color., and Bound in red velvet. Bookplate 2 early state. Not in Manuscript Catalogue of 1763.
Depiction of seven Roman weights(?), numbered in Roman numerals from I to VII. The sides of the circular objects bear pictures of various heads, beasts, objects and symbols. Three of the objects have their obverse and reverse depicted side by side, the two faces connected with a horizontal double line. All were part of the collection which Conyers Middleton acquired in Rome in 1723-4 and sold to Horace Walpole in 1744
