"The Regent, as Macheath, wearing military uniform and heavily shackled, stands between Mrs. Fitzherbert, who kneels at his feet (left) removing his leg-irons, and Lady Hertford (right), who stands beside him taking the fetters from his wrists (inscribed 'Restri[ctions]'), He sings "How happy could I be with either." Mrs. Fitzherbert, a long rosary dangling from her waist, says: "The Benediction of His Holiness light on the Defender of Our Faith." Lady Hertford, sultana-like in a jewelled turban, says: "You heard of the Row & the Rowly Powly Song before Our house the Other Night?!!" Behind and on the right Eldon stands full-face between Perceval and McMahon, who face each other in profile. Perceval, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, and holding a brief-bag, says: "The Greys won't move without their own Coachman tho the Brewer [Whitbread] has offerd his black to do the dirty Work." Eldon, in a huge wig, holds the Purse of the Great Seal; he says: "We must hire Jobs for the Night Work but we are Pro' Rogued." McMahon, in military uniform, has a number of ribbons and stars hanging over his arm; he says: "These Garters & Ribbonds are all returned." On the wall are two pictures: George Hanger, bestriding his pony (as in No. 8889) with a burly bailiff seated behind him, rides in the direction of a sign-post, with a noose hanging from it, pointing 'To the Kings Bench'. This is 'George & his Hanger On, takeing a ride together to a Lodging in Surry'. The other is Sheridan as Bacchus, but dressed as Harlequin (cf. "A scene in the mouth of a cave with the sea in the background. The smuggler is Melville, in Highland dress, caught by Fox, Sheridan, and Whitbread, revenue officers wearing spurred top-boots. He kneels, with hands clasped, looking up at Whitbread (r.), who stands over him with a raised whip; he screams: "Marcy O' me wha can bear sick a lashing Indeed you shall ha it aw Gentlemen - ee'n to the last Baubee". Whitbread, his heavy lash inscribed 'Whitbreads Intire', answers: "Be quick then and dont trifle with us, we have got some more of your gang to look after!!" "A sequel to No. 11384. A fantastic scene in Oxford representing Grenville's installation as Chancellor, which took place at Commemoration, 3 July 1810. Grenville rises in a balloon above a vast applauding crowd; his inflated and spherical posterior fits into the shallow bowl which forms the car. He wears a papal tiara and his Chancellor's gown; a large cross is on his posterior. He extends his arms horizontally, scattering symbolical objects. These are (left): a Cardinal's hat, a rosary, a mitre set in a ducal coronet, and a book, 'Liber Regis . . . Oxford . . .'; (right): three books: 'Letter to the Earl of Fingal'; 'Irish Mass Book'; 'Liber Valorum'. The spherical gas-bag of the balloon represents an inflated Lord Temple, the crown of the head at the summit, with upturned profile in the arc just below (left); shoes emerge from the opposite pole; from the posterior issues a tail or cloud, streaming upward, inscribed 'Promisses'. The car, decorated with Popish emblems, the Host between winged heads, hangs from cords suspended from a net covering the balloon. Three bishops, seated on asses which crouch in neighing obeisance towards Grenville, reach up eagerly towards the Cardinal's hat, &c. They are in back view, and in the foreground on the extreme left. Behind them is part of the Radcliffe Camera, the greater part being cut off by the left margin. By the door is a placard: 'Order'd That No Doctor of Laws shall be admitted without Bag Wig'. Two men are leaving the building: Lord George Grenville, followed by (?) Thomas Grenville. [Not Windham (as Wright and Evans say) who died in June. Lord Holland says Lord Grenville, but he does not resemble him, and his double appearance is unlikely.] The Marquis of Buckingham looks from the principal window under the dome; Lord Stafford leans from a smaller window below. All four wear bag-wigs and gowns. On a projection above the door stands a chicken with the head of M. A. Taylor (the 'Chick of Law', see No. 6777) puffing a blast up at the balloon. Spectacled and bewigged owls perch on the balustrade surrounding the dome. In the foreground on the right is a large group, many of whom wear doctor's gowns with black masks over their features, tied over bag-wigs that perch awkwardly on their heads. Three of them wave their mortar-board caps towards the balloon: Erskine, Tierney (without a mask and especially deferential), and Lord Holland, his face completely blackened by a mask and wearing a mob-cap. Behind (right) are Lord Grey, Sidmouth holding a clyster-pipe behind his back (cf. No. 9849), Lord Cholmondeley, whose wig is back to front and tilted tipsily over one eye, and Whitbread, who clutches his mortarboard in both hands. In front little Lord Lansdowne capers, holding up the brush and shovel of a chimney-sweep (as Lord Henry Petty he was satirized as an inveterate dancer, cf. No. 10589). Next him, but walking off to the right, is Sheridan, who, unlike the others, does not wear a gown and bag-wig, but is naked except for tattered Harlequin trousers (cf. No. 9916), shoes, and ruffles fastened round his wrists to indicate genteel poverty; he clutches his head with a despairing gesture. In the foreground on the extreme right. Dr. Crowe, the Public Orator, sits on the ground, leaning against a milestone with closed eyes and a contented smile; beside him are an overturned tankard inscribed 'Whitbread Entire' [cf. No. 10421], and papers, 'Oratio Croweiana', which a dog is befouling. The stone is inscribed [blank] 'Miles from Oxford to Rome'. The middle distance is filled with a dense crowd of spectators, receding into a sea of heads. Those in front are doctors in red gowns bowing low as Grenville ascends. In front of the crowd Sir W. W. Wynn and his two brothers (Grenville's nephews), sit together in a little chaise drawn by three galloping Welsh goats (as in No. 9760); they wear bag-wigs and gowns and raise their caps to Grenville. One of the goats gallops over a prostrate man in doctor's wig and gown. A bishop (the Archbishop of York) drives through the crowd (left to right) in an open barouche; he doffs his mitre; the coachman and three fat footmen standing behind wave their cocked hats. The crowd surrounds a wooden booth (left) and a high wagon which serves as platform for a rustic family group to view the display. The booth is placarded: 'Wonder of the World the biggest Flying Elephant in the Whole Fair'. Inside it, tiny figures peer at the posterior of a vast elephant with little wings and the head of Grenville. The background is a fantastic view of Oxford towers, which resembles, and is perhaps based on, a drawing by Rowlandson (reproduced, C. Hobhouse, 'Oxford', 1939, p. 60). The crowd fills a space between the Radcliffe Camera and the wall of All Souls abutting (right) on the west end of the Chapel. Behind (left) is the cupola over the gate of All Souls with (right) Hawkesmoor's twin towers flanking a 'Popish' cross. Tom Tower, Christ Church, much heightened and enlarged (right), behind the chapel, flies a Popish flag decorated with tiara and keys, and is traversed from top to bottom by a great fissure. A satire ridiculing the installation of Lord Grenville as the Chancellor of Oxford University on July 3rd, 1810. The installation followed a divisive election in which Lord Eldon opposed Lord Grenville on political and religious grounds. Opponents like Gillray saw Grenville's installation as a triumph for Catholic Emancipation. Here Grenville rises in balloon over a vast applauding crowd in Oxford. "On the left is a pleasant old-fashioned tavern, 'The Kings Head', with a half length portrait of George IV in crown and robes. Ministers are seen within the open window, Castlereagh's profile on the left. A sturdy John Bull in top-boots stands outside, watching with distaste a disorderly and drunken rabble crowding round the door and (broken) window of the opposite house, the sign 'Mother Red Cap', a half length portrait of Queen Caroline, raddled and disreputable, a tricolour cockade in her conical hat. From the end of the beam supporting the sign hangs a pear (emblem of Bergami, see British Museum Satires No. 13869). The house (right) is a ruinous timber structure, shored up by beams. The crowd have a banner of a woman's shift inscribed 'Un Sun'd Snow NB "The Times" Taken in Here.' A man plays drum and pan-pipes. One man empties a bottle of spirits inscribed 'Queens Mixture' down the throat of a drunken fellow lying on his back. A fat man has a tankard of 'Qu[een's] Entire'. The two inns are respectively placarded 'The Original Brunswick House of Call for Loyalists--Pure Wine--Good Spirits --Sound Ale'; and 'The Brunswick Radical House of Call Italian Wines Bergamy Perry [cf. "Melville (l.) stands by a pile of bricks, each marked with a coronet (except one with a mitre), and the words 'Not Guilty'. These he is hurling with great vigour at (some of) the managers of the impeachment who flee in disorder, to the right., putting up their arms to fend off the missiles. He wears Highland dress with a magnificently feathered bonnet; his plaid swirls out. He says, the words in a large label: '"Self-preservation's Heaven's eldest law. "Imprest upon our Nature with our life, "In Characters indelible, who shrinks "From this great cause is wanting to his righteason: "But when our Honor is traduc'd and stab'd at, "T'is Virtue, t'is heroic Fortitude, "Then to encounter violence with Force.' His bricks are stacked on a fringed carpet on which is the motto 'Dieu et m[on] Droit'. Sheridan, the hindmost, protects himself with his hat, and says: "Why Charley! I am afraid we have drank too much of this cursed Entire." Just in front of him is Whitbread, an 'Essay on Brewing' [cf. BMSat 10574] projecting from his coat-pocket. Fox, next, turns to protect himself; in front Howick (Whitbread's brother-in-law) grovels on the ground, grasping the edge of a large upright cask of 'Whitbread's Entire' [see BMSat 10421]. Into this Lord Temple, one of the Managers of the Impeachment, is plunging head first, displaying bulky breeches inscribed 'Temple of Hymen'. Behind stands a man in gown and bands, evidently Dr. Laurence. Beside Whitbread and Howick are overturned tankards of 'Whitbreads Entire' [a few letters only of the inscription being visible], spilling their contents. [Parodying the often-quoted in 'hoc signo vinces', the inscription on a vision of a fiery cross, to which legend attributed the conversion of Constantine. The 'non' is added inconspicuously with a caret.] On the building is a torn placard: 'performed The Tragedy Timon of [Athens] Lord Timon Mr Melville Lucullus a false friend & Kinsman Mr Kinhard [Kinnaird] little more than Kin and less than kind Scotch Reel &c.' Facing the ale-house, and on the extreme left, is the corner of the poop of a ship, the Romney. From this projects a hand aiming a blunderbuss inscribed 'Pophams Defence' at the sign-board; a blast of flame and smoke issues from it. On the ship is a board inscribed 'Wanted Supply of naval Stores Inquire within'.
