In Latin., Script: Written by two scribes employing differing forms of Gothica textualis, the first having written the first quire, the second the remainder of the codex., Headlines throughout in alternating red and blue capitals, chapter numbers in margins also in alternating colors, and large capitals at beginnings of books and chapters of the text in red or blue, with extensive filiform decoration bordering the left margin in the contrasting color on leaves with such capitals, all the work of a rubricator, performed separately from the writing of the text. Book and chapter headings in red by the scribes throughout., and Binding: Modern European parchment-covered boards, backstrip calligraphically lettered in gothic script with the author's name and title.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a book of instruction for the author's daughter. Although the volume contains information on parts of speech, explanations of the meanings of words in the English language, basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, systems of government, and numerous prayers and meditations, the bulk of the volume is given to instruction on letter-writing and astronomy. The manuscript contains guidelines for how to address a queen, a duchess, or someone of one's own station; how to end letters; and how to write a "billet"; as well as form letters of thanks, consolation, recommendation, "congratulation for the recovery of health," and "to a lady newly come to London." The section on astronomy includes 7 diagrams and includes information on the positions of the planets, the phases of the moon, and eclipses
Description:
Stanhope, Philip, second earl of Chesterfield (1633-1714), courtier and politician, was the eldest son of Henry Stanhope (d. 1634), and his wife Katherine (bap. 1609, d. 1667). He was involved in numerous duels, fleeing the country after having killed Francis Wolley, the son of a Hammersmith doctor, in a duel on 17 January 1660. Chesterfield was appointed on 24 February 1662 as lord chamberlain to Queen Catherine of Braganza, and on 13 June 1667 was made the colonel of a foot regiment, but it was disbanded following the treaty of Breda. That year he married his third wife, Lady Elizabeth Dormer (1653-1677). They had two sons and two daughters, one of whom was Lady Mary Stanhope, for whom the manuscript was written. In Latin., Script: Art. 1 in a small and regular Greek minuscule script; arts. 2-6 in humanistic cursive script, below top line, by a single scribe who also added marginalia; art. 7 in humanistic cursive by a different scribe., One illuminated initial of poor quality, gold, 3-line, on blue, green, and pink ground. Rubrics and marginal key words (for ff. 1r-6r, 31r only) in pale red. Plain blue intials in art. 2; red or blue elsewhere., and Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Original sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of wooden boards and nailed. The spine is lined with leather between sewing supports. Covered in brown sheepskin with corner tongues and blind-tooled with concentric frames, one filled with rope interlace, and a rope interlace square on a point in the central panel. Annular dots are colored with gold or copper, now green. Spine: very faint diapering with triple fillets. There are five round bosses on each board and two fastenings, leaf-shaped catches on the lower board and the upper one cut in for fabric straps. The front board is detached; one boss wanting.

In Latin., Script: two scribes: art. 1 is copied in Gothica Cursiva Formata close to Fractura; art. 2 in Gothica Semihybrida Currens with many abbreviations; in this art. the first line of each chapter is in clumsily executed large Gothica Textualis Formata., Headings, paragraph marks, stroking of majuscules and underlining of the references to the authorities and their works, all in red ink (the underlining was beforehand traced by the scribe in black ink). Plain red 1-line initials at the opening of each chapter, sometimes with marginal extensions (a 3-line initial at the beginning of the text, f. 9r). Instructions for the rubricator are found in the margins., and Binding: original undecorated red pigskin over wooden boards; spine with four raised bands. Two clasps attached to the rear cover, with quadrangular brass catches on the front cover; a hole about the center of the top of the rear cover indicates that the booklet once was a liber catenatus. On the front cover a rectangular parchment title label with handwritten inscription in Gothica Cursiva Libraria: “De confessione. De amore Dei. De beatitudine” (16th century?).

In Latin., Watermark: bird (Briquet 12127?)., The main scribe (artt. 1-2) writes Gothica Hybrida (often close to Gothica Semitextualis) Libraria under strong Humanistic influence, visible in the use of Roman Capitals and straight s in final position., Space and partly guide-letters for a few initials were provided but the decoration is missing. In the space for the first initial (f. 1r) a coat of arms (silver, with a bend gules) was afterwards drawn., and Binding: Twentieth century. Half brown leather over pasteboard, the covers covered with brown paper. On the spine the gold-tooled title "ARISTOTLE . OECONOMICA . MS. 15TH CENT.".
