The correspondence is among Barney, Bettina Bergery, Berthe Cleyrergue, Laura Dreyfus-Barney, Marcelle Fauchier-Delavigne, Nadine Hwang, Janine Lahovany, André Rouveyre, and Crédit Suisse Berne, dated 1935-1973. The bulk of the correspondence consists of eighty-five letters from Barney to Cleyrergue, dated 1940-1968. The photographs depict several individuals, including Barney, Dolly Wilde, Valery Larbaud, Hwang, Eva Palmer, Mina Loy, Djuna Barnes, Antoinette Gentien, Renée Vivien, Laura Dreyfus-Barney, and Marie Laurencin. The legal document is a typescript copy of a page from an April 1918 voir dire, detailing the troubled marriage between Colette and Henry de Jouvenal. The newspaper clipping is an undated cartoon of the temple de l'amitié in Barney's garden. Two typescript copies of Romaine Brooks's untitled memoir. Brooks describes her professional and personal life covering her upbringing and education, including her experiences as a student at the Scuola Nazionale and the Académie Colarossi, to her life as an expatriate American in Paris and Capri. Brooks, who remained in Europe during World War One and World War Two, also provides insight into her wartime experiences. Her career as an artist is also richly documented in the memoir, which includes descriptions of her sitters, ranging from well-known figures such as Gabriele D'Annunzio to lesser known models, and her views on art and her working methods. Brooks also discusses her relationship with her partner Natalie Clifford Barney.

Gift of Norman Holmes Pearson. and Romaine Brooks (1874-1970) was an American painter. She studied at the Scuola Nazionale (1896-1897) in Rome and the Académie Colarossi (1899) in Paris. Her first one-person exhibition was at the Galerie Durand-Ruel (1910). Brooks is well-known for her portraits, usually in a grey palette, of women in masculine dress.

This collection consists principally of photographic prints of Barney at various ages: as a teenager; as a young woman in Victorian attire and in riding gear; with Gabriele d'Annunzio; with Romaine Brooks; with unidentified friends; and by herself at age 48. Also included are: a photographic postcard addressed to "Chère Rachilde"; an inscribed calling card; and a copy of a book of poems by Louis Emié ("Hauts Desirs Sans Absence" Paris: Pierre Seghers, 1953), inscribed to Barney, with a letter from Barney to Emié.
