"An emblematical and composite scene, with a realistic background intended for Lake Como, with the Villa d'Este (right), decorated with dancing figures as in British Museum satires no. 14171. In the foreground the Queen, between Bergami and Wood, falls from the tilting summit of a breaking pillar, supported on insecure props. She falls to the left, with Bergami, whose arm is round her waist. Wood, who holds her left hand, falls to the right, weighed down by a block inscribed 'Log' chained to his ankle. A small figure of Justice holding scales descends through the air towards them. The pillar resolves itself into separate blocks on each of which is a letter: 'M O B / I L I T Y'. A board resting on a ram's head forms the tiny platform from which the trio are falling. The pillar rests on a slab inscribed 'Adultery'. This is supported on the bewigged head of Brougham which is raised on three props: a massive broom, and two beams poised on a rectanglar cage in which sits a second and much smaller lawyer (Denman). The beams are respectively 'Sham Addresses' and 'Hired Processions' [see British Museum satires no. 14182]. These props are flanked by two ladders resting against the 'Adultery' slab, by which Bergami (see British Museum satires no. 14183) and Wood (see British Museum satires no. 13734) have reached the Queen. One (left) is inscribed 'Brass'; from it dangle emblems of Bergami: a postilion's boot, a whip, and a Maltese cross, see British Museum satires no. 13810. The other (right) is 'Wood'; from it dangle a bottle, a pestle and mortar, and a porter's knot. In the foreground (right) are thistles, emblem of 'Thistle-Wood', see British Museum satires no. 14146. On Lake Como sails (left) a one-masted vessel with a tent on its deck, the polacca, see British Museum satires no. 13818. Beyond its shores and on the extreme left are tiny buildings representing Jerusalem. A lake-side signpost, 'To Jerusalem', points in the same direction, and near it the Princess and Bergami ride side by side on asses (see British Museum satires no. 13918, &c.). On the right is a travelling-carriage, with two horses and a postilion; in it sit the same couple. On the door are the letters 'C·B'. "A scene in the Lords. A large Green Bag stands wide open on the floor before the Woolsack; John Bull, a fat 'cit', takes from it a bottle inscribed 'Imputation' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13796]; the cork, in the form of a crown, flies up, and smoke rises. Eldon, seated on the Woolsack, one foot regally on a sack inscribed 'Mother Coal', scowls at the bottle; his mouth, like those of the other peers, is closed by a padlock, but he holds up a paper inscribed: 'My Lords-- Right or Wrong we will proceed'. J.B. faces him with arm flung back, exclaiming: "Stop--hear me first--step one Inch if you dare without my consent-- I protest against your Secret Tribunal I'll protect the Queen look at this Bottle--and look at that Reptile." He refers to a serpent wearing a royal crown and representing the King; this issues from a rent in the bag which is inscribed 'The Green Bag Opened'. Peers are grouped near Eldon, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Wellington, and Liverpool being the most prominent. "A cricket-match. The King (left), who is nearest the picture-plane and larger in scale than the others, has just bowled, with arms flung wide, a huge ball inscribed 'Reform', hitting the batsman, Wellington, in the stomach and knocking him against the stumps. Grey fields near the King, exclaiming, 'Hu.a he's Out'; the King: 'Aye and with a Ground hopper too'. Farther off (left to right) are Burdett (in top-boots), Lord John Russell, who says 'Thats what I call a Purger' [see British Museum Satires No. 16602], and Brougham. All the players wear shirts and waistcoats. There are also two others in the field (as spectators they wear coats), Aberdeen (indicated by tartan) who says 'Foul Foul', and Cumberland. "Alderman Wood, as a zany at a fair, stands on a platform outside a booth addressing a crowd of spectators, half length figures in the foreground forming the base of the design. He points with his right thumb to the Queen (left), who is ready to perform, dressed much as in British Museum Satires No. 14103 but more grotesquely. On the right are Brougham and Denman, as beefeaters, with the letters 'C R' on the breast, but with legal wig and bands; each has a trumpet; that of Denman, who blows it, has a banner 'Solicit you in General'. Wood has ass's ears, wears a fool's cap and red and yellow gown (see British Museum Satires No. 14122) over his suit, with big jack-boots. Under his arm is a bulky rolled document; he holds out a placard: 'Signora Diable Humbuggina now exhibiting with most astonishing Effect.' His words are etched on a big tricolour placard above his head: 'Now then Ladies and Gemmen, here ye has Signora Diable Humbuggina, the most wonderfullest conjuress that ever vas seed at home or abroad. The most perfect Amphibrous Nondescript Hannimal that was ever seed before or behind. She has exhibited her Genus to all the crowned Potentaties, and all the principalest Men in all Europe including the Day of Alljeers [Tunis, see British Museum Satires No. 12810] von o' the best Judges in this here Universe. This here living vonder o' the vorld can conjure dunghill grubs and Knights of all sorts [see British Museum Satires No. 13810], ride a Donkey [see British Museum Satires No. 14015] a Zebra [see British Museum Satires No. 14110] and her high-horse at von and the same time. Sleep 40 days & nights under the same Tent vith a man, and never be wicious [see British Museum Satires No. 13818]. She can play with all the grace that ever vas, Columbine, Automaton [see British Museum Satires No. 14120, &c.] Pilgrim [see British Museum Satires No. 14121], or Dragon, and swallow all sorts of Spirity liquors by the Gallon and never be the Vorserer [see British Museum Satires No. 14175]--. So now is the time before this most surprisingest exhibition closes. Blow the trumpet Denny--Valk up Ladies and Gemmen-- Vy dont you blow Broom?' The Queen, very décolletée, with an over-dress displaying frilled and spotted drawers or trousers, wears a barn-stormer's crown with towering peacocks' feathers. At her feet is a notice: 'Juggling taught in all its branches'. At the feet of the beefeaters: 'Books of the travels of this wonderfull Phenomenon to be had within'. Their booth is garlanded with fairy lights and surmounted by a cap of Liberty. In the background on left and right are other attractions of the fair. A beefeater with 'G.R' on his breast blows his trumpet outside a booth flying a Union Jack, and inscribed 'Here's your Works. All from Nature. No connexion with the Jugglers.' Outside it are pictorial placards, all of animals with human heads: an ass with the head of Lieut. Hownam, a creature with the head of Bergami, and an ape with the head of Wood as in British Museum Satires No. 14131. Visitors crowd towards it. Before it is a woman in a swing. On the right are two tents, one inscribed 'Good Strong Caroline Brandy', the other flying a tricolour flag inscribed 'Ale and strong liquors'. In the centre foreground stands John Bull, pointing up at the Queen, and addressing the gaping and amused spectators around him. He is a plump respectable countryman, his words engraved below the title: 'Why dang-it I tell ye that ere business be all Impositioning like--Do na g'in, I mysel war taken in tother day; but blow my wig if I ha any more to do wi that shew like.--do na g'in, It be all my eye [cf. Abstract:
Four rows of designs with one to three designs in each, individually titled. In the upper left and reading across, "Daddy Longlegs" shows a very think, long-legged man poised to smash the insect on his wall. To the right, on top "The itinerant chanceller" is a scene with a cricketer about to bat a large ball and below a scene with men wearing Dutch-style hats watch as one of the group takes a small ball and readies to bowl down a stand of large, egg-shaped objects. On the far right of the first row, a portly man greets a thin, frail man with wings as ears that extend above his hat, wearing glasses and leaning on a cane. The larger man says "Bless my soul Mr. Pidgeonwidgen! How do ye do. Well now, you look uncommon well considering your Ears." On the second row left, “Follow my leader”, the top image shows a thin man laboring up a hill as he pulls a very large man seated and reading at ease in the a four-wheeled chair. Below three men carrying guns stand up to their necks in a river having followed a taller man in a top hat calmly walking ahead. The speech balloon above their heads reads, “Didn't I tell ye it was only up to the middle.” The first smaller man replies, “The middle indeed. Why we are up to our necks d'ye think our legs are stilts like yours.” In the middle of the second row, A very thin man in Scotish costume (Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux?) striding vigorously using a broom as a walking stick and burdened with boxes and bags on his back and waist, labelled “Freedoms of Scotch Towns”, “Broken Vituals the remnants of the Edinburgh Gorge.”, and “Proceeds of the Penny Mag.” The caption below reads, “I flatter myself I've made a tolerable good job by my “Starring it” with Old Grey in the North. Sold all my numbers of the Penny Mag. and well puff'd it thro' applause with the ex-premier. Received some score of Burgesses, Freedoms, and Invitations to as many dinners where I blew my own trumpet & obtain'd plenty of orders from our 'Usefull Knowledge Society', now “woe” to the unstamn'd when I get home.” The last image in row two, on the right, is un-captioned and shows a devil riding behind a horseman bolting across an evening sky. Below two men peak through tall grass and observe an otter and The third row contains a single image captioned “Something like a chase” which shows horsemen following their hounds across a field and over a fence, many of whom have fallen their horses or encountered other types of accidents and falls. In the distance is a small sign indicating that they rode from Wombell's. In the last row, on the left, two men, one with a gun with a barrel turned at 90 degrees, peak out from around the corner of a building, looking at a rooster and some chickens. The caption reads, “Paddy's gun, warranted to shoot around the corner.” The first man says, “Put ye spalpeen, wat are you after, if you let it off, by my soul it'll blow ye to de Divil.” To which the man with the gun replies, “Ock, come out now and hav'nt I made it into a 'Patent Cylindrical Twisted Barrel Gun' and dont day shoot de best, ye Murphy digger.” In the middle of the bottom row, is an image of a constable apprehending a frightened chimney sweep, with the caption “Reforming the Clergy”. The constable says, “Come along, you've hacted contrary to the Hact of Parlyment in crying out “Sweep”. There's 40 bob for ye or else a month in Quad." To which the sweep replies, “Oh criky, don't grab me this here vunce and I'll no not never cry Sweep agin. Vot's us poor flue-sakers to do if as how ve don't cry summut all for to let the people know or how ve are in the streets.” Two other laborers, another sweep and a swag man, in the distance on the right and left, observe “Does any lady or Gemmen's flue pipe vont expurgating.” The other says, “The law have mercy on us.” The third and final image at the end of the fourth row has the caption “A Crack Shot” with an image of a man with a caricatured face and a top hat, holding a gun in his hands and an umbrella between his legs as he stands before a door, the top half of which is open; a bird in a cage hangs to the side of the door. The speech balloon above his head reads, “There's one at last, the only chance of a shy I've had to day. "Brougham, seated in profile to the right in a chair inscribed Place, makes a bonfire on the floor of documents and his Old Stuff gown. This he holds over the flames on a levelled broomstick, the broom being inscribed Treasury Broom. Under one foot is a paper inscribed Opposition. He says: I think I shall cut a dash with my new gown; so here goes for the old one--Silk against Stuff for any money. But this worn out concern stinks most damnably: tis true, a great deal of dirty work has been done in it and it was only stuff at first:--it now emits more smoke than flame; yet I can distinguish a magic picture through this volume of vapour. O, glorious precedence! "Tam venerabile erat praecedere" Juvl. The burning papers are: March of Intellect [see British Museum Satires No. 15178], Liberty [of the] Pres[s], Blacks, Catholic Emancipation, Mulatoes, Reform. The smoke from the fire is inscribed Independence, Patriotism, Public Charities, Vapour, Retrenchment. Behind him (left) his new gown hangs on a stand made of an upright which supports his new wig, and a cross-bar inscribed Treasury. The gown is Patent New Silk. Partly concealed by the smoke is the 'magic picture': Anticipation; the Purse of the Great Seal suspended above mace and sword.
