- "Design in an oval. Two men playing cards at a small round table. The man on the right pulls out an ace of spades from the five cards in his hand and shows it with a grimace of satisfaction. His opponent (left), in profile to the right, looks at it with an expression of consternation, frowning and opening his mouth wide. The pack and other cards lie on the table. The men are probably portraits. The successful player is middle-aged, plainly dressed, with a bob-wig; the other is younger, very thin, and more fashionably dressed, with a long pigtail queue."--British Museum online catalogue.

- "A game of billiards is being played on a table, one corner of which only is visible, so curiously elongated that it gives the impression of a triangular table. The two players stand by the corner of the table, the one who is about to make a stroke appears from his leanness, frogged coat, and long pigtail queue to be a Frenchman; he leans over the table in profile to the left, wearing pince-nez. His opponent watches him, standing on top-toe, his cue held over his left shoulder, his face screwed up in anxiety; he wears a bag-wig. A number of spectators look on with expressions of amusement or concern: on the right two men stand together grinning; on the left a man watches open-mouthed; behind the table a man watches with an expression of alarm, another takes cover behind him with a grin; a small boy stands beside them. In the foreground are two dogs, one, a greyhound, stands between the player's legs. On the wall behind the table is a rack of cues and two clock-faced scoring boards both pointing to the figure X. On the right is a door, on the left a small casement window. A Jew is in a chaise, taking his pleasure in the air; the fair Jewess, his wife, is driving, the rest of their family are by their side. A stout elderly volunteer in his uniform is out for exercise and relaxation, mounted on a heavy horse from the cart, ridden with blinkers."--Grego.

- Abstract:
- "Three burly French fishwives carry on their backs through the water three English visitors from a boat on the extreme right. Two other fishwives stand in the water by the boat trying to persuade a stout and angry lady to entrust herself to them; a Frenchman in the boat also addresses her. On the shore (left) a group of French people waits their arrival: foremost is a postilion standing in the huge milk-churn boots (worn only on horseback) which so much surprised English visitors. He holds out a paper inscribed 'Poste Royale'. A hotel servant holds back the postilion and proffers a card inscribed 'Hotel d'Angleterre'; he wears a nightcap with a bag-wig and ruffles and stands 'chapeau-bras'. Beside him is a rival tout, a dwarfish man or boy dressed in a slovenly manner, his feet in sabots stuffed with straw; he holds out a card inscribed 'Hotel.... Behind them' (left) are a monk and a fishwife with a basket on her back, her bare feet in sabots shaped like mules but stuffed with straw. A dog, grotesquely shaved in the French manner, completes the group. Cliffs (left) form a background. The foremost passenger is a typical John Bull wearing top-boots; he has an expression of fixed determination, his wig slips from his head and his hat is falling into the sea. Next is a lady wearing a riding-habit and a high-crowned hat. A younger man, fashionably dressed, with high hat, long breeches, and short boots, leers down at the woman who carries him. The fishwives are dressed alike with frilled muslin caps, loose jackets, and short petticoats; they wear ear-rings, and crosses hang from their necks."--British Museum online catalogue.
