"A scene in the House of Commons. In the foreground is the space outside the bar, filled with burlesqued supporters of Paull's petition against Sheridan's return for Westminster (see BMSat 10619, &c). These are struck by darts of fire, lightning, and smoke from the Speaker (Abbot), a diminutive figure, almost entirely composed of a huge wig. There are two main blasts, the larger (l.) directed against Paull, the other (r.) against Bosville, Horne Tooke, and Cobbett. In the former is the fiery face of Sheridan, glaring at his enemy, with flames from mouth and nostril. Paull has been thrown violently on to his back, having slipped from the back of a goose with the head of Burdett, on which he has ridden into the House. The goose waddles off to the right., with outstretched neck, following Tooke, the toe of one of Paull's boots still in a stirrup. From Burdett's profile projects the beak of a goose; his long neck is labelled 'Green-Goose from Brentford'. Burdett and his friends seem anxious to slink off without association with the calamity that has befallen Paull. The latter has dropped a long document, which is blazing; this is headed: 'Petition - Humble Petition against Rd Brin[sley] Sheridan for Bribery Corruption . . .' Other papers on which he has fallen are headed 'Scr[utiny]' and 'Impeachment Marquiss Wellesley' [see BMSat 10561, &c.]. A bonnet rouge falls from his head; he has dropped his yard-stick, shears, a cabbage, cucumbers (cf. BMSat 10608, &c). Behind him (l.) is his Counsel, Henry Clifford, in wig and gown, with a drink-blotched face, dropping a sheaf of papers: 'Brief - Paul versus Sheridan.' He heads a crowd of disreputable witnesses, characteristic of Gillray's denizens of the underworld (cf. BMSat 9202); some wear favours in their hats inscribed 'Paul'. All fall backwards under the impact of the Speaker's blast. One man, the palm of his hand branded 'R T' (signifying that he has returned from transportation), grasps a paper inscribed 'Perjury'; a noseless old woman holds a 'Forged Letter of Richd Br Sherridan.' One man holds up a marrow-bone, another a cleaver inscribed 'No Bastille, to show that they belonged to Burdett's election mob, see BMSat 9878, &c. (though he dropped that cry in 1804). The King sits on the throne on a small round dais, in back view, only his left hand, r. elbow (with the sceptre) and feet being visible. Two petitioners, hat in hand, bow low, in profile to the right and to the left. ... [2] 'The Westminster Petition - a kick-out from Wimbleton.' The would-be petitioners have invaded Horne Tooke's bedroom, and are being kicked out by Burdett. Tooke lies in bed ... The head of his bed is decorated with (guardian) angels (cf. BMSat 8132). Burdett, flourishing a (breaking) 'Club of Reform' [cf. BMSat 10742], kicks Sheridan behind, and tries to close the door (r.) on them ... He holds the arm of a stout, plainly dressed man and hurries from the room, as, more furtively, does Bosville. ... Beside the bed (l.) is a commode decorated with a bonnet rouge, and strewn with torn newspapers: 'Cobbetts Weekly Political Register', 'Morning Chronicle', 'Convention of Cintra', 'Times', 'Fodder'. [3] 'The Chelmsford Petition. - Broad-Bottom-Patriots [cf. BMSat 10530] addressing the Essex Calves!' Five men stand on a platform addressing an audience of calves, standing on their hind legs and waving bonnets rouges. The spokesman is the gouty St. Vincent, in uniform, supported on a stick, and pounding with his clenched fist. ... Next Vincent (r.) is Lord Temple, holding out the 'Essex Petition - Horrid Convention - Ministers Firing the Park Guns - Armistice in French lang[uage]'. Behind stand Petty, waving his hat and shouting "Bravo", and Windham. ... [4] '- The Middlesex-Petition! - Hackney Orators inspiring the Independent Blue & Buff Intent -.' "Cobbett (right) stands facing six men grouped at a round table who applaud the toast he gives: 'Damnation to the House of Brunswick' [cf. No. 11234]. In his left hand is a bottle of 'True Napoleone Spirits'; the contents of his raised glass are exploding. On his right sits Horne Tooke, with a crutch, holding a jug of 'Botley Ale' and a glass, both frothing. He says with a sinister upturned glance: 'Huzza! Huzza'. On Cobbett's left, and in back view, stands a naval officer wearing a cocked hat and high fashionable boots. He holds high a steaming bowl of 'Botley Grog'; under his foot is a paper: 'Basque Roads- Court Martial', showing that he is Cochrane, see No. 11326, &c. Facing Cobbett sit Bosville and Clifford. Bosville, silent, decrepit, and senile, grasps a bottle of 'Botley Ale' and holds a foaming glass; in his pocket is a 'Plan for a new Convention'. Clifford, brandy-faced, and with his barrister's wig awry, holds a bottle of 'French Brandy' and a brimming glass, saying "Huzza". Behind these two stand Burdett and Folkestone. Each holds up a frothing glass; Burdett waves his bonnet rouge and shouts "Huzza!-Huzza!" Folkestone echoes "Huzza!" In the foreground with his back to the table lies Wardle, very sick, clasping a bottle of 'Botley Ale', and vomiting over papers: 'Charges against the Duke of York' and 'Reform', see No. 11328, &c. A cat (left), with a collar inscribed 'Mrs Clarke', miaows at him (see No. 11216, &c). On the right are a tankard inscribed 'Whitbread's Small Beer', and a wine-cooler containing five bottles of 'Napolean Wine' [cf. No. 11004]. The floor is boarded, but under Cobbett's chair is a fringed carpet. The room is lit by candles set in branches which decorate the oval frame of a half-length portrait of 'Napoleone Le Grand'; he is in profile to the right, looking down at Cobbett and holding out a 'Cordon d'Honor'. The portrait is flanked by busts on brackets: 'Despard' [see No. 9969] with a noose round his neck, and 'Robespiere' with two daggers. On the table by Clifford are two more bottles of 'French' [Brandy], by Cochrane a bottle labelled (?) 'Coitaris', an overturned bottle, and a plate of 'Diables'.
