"George III stands on a low rectangular platform placed upon a boarded floor and is approached from all sides by applicants for office. He is in back view, but turns his head in profile to the left, to inspect a group through his spy-glass, saying: Well Gentlemen,--I have taken a peep at you all: but I am afraid that you won't do--for some of you are too Heavy & Broad-Bottom'd for Service; & the rest seem to have no Bottom at all.--So Gentlemen, I think I shall he content with my Old Servants. In the front row (left), bowing low, are three Grenvilles, the Broad-Bottoms par excellence (see No. 10530): Grenville, holding a gold-laced coachman's hat and long whip, says: Does your Honor want a steady Broad-Bottom'd Coachman to drive you; in bowing he has split his tight breeches. His nephew Temple is next him, then the spectacled Buckingham who says: We'll do any Thing; his son (Temple) adds and in any Way! [cf. No. 10721]. Close behind is the emaciated Sidmouth, hat in hand and holding out a bottle labelled Cathartic; he says: Pray your Honor remember Doctor Slop! your Old Apothecary, who Physick'd the French! [see No. 9849]. Next him and nearer the spectator stands Whitbread, dressed as a porter, and mopping his head. His porter's knot is on the ground, inscribed: Saml Froth his Knot--Carries any Weight in any Weather. He supports against his knees a huge rectangular pile of Motions to be brought in the House of Commons. These are inscribed: Motion against Royal Family [cf. No. 11234]; Motion against the Ministry; against the War; against y Judges; against the Church; against Magna Charta; Motion against. He says: If his Honor wants an Honest Porter, I'm his Man! Behind him and on the extreme left Lord Henry Petty capers to a dancing-master's kit which he plays with his fingers; he asks: Does his Honor want a Fidler to play a Jig [see No, 10589]. Behind Petty and Whitbread are two men dressed as chairmen with straps across the shoulder: one is Grattan; the other (?) Ponsonby, asks: Does his Honor want a pair of Irish Chairmen to carry his Honor clean through the Mud? Behind these and in the doorway (left) is a group of three: Cobbett, holding up his hat and a sheaf of Cobbett Political Register, says: Does his Honor want a Patriotic Reformer? Burdett asks: Does his Honor want a Partner in Business!--ask him Townsend. Townsend, the Bow Street officer, holding up his constable's staff, faces the group, saying sternly: Out with you & be damn'd; from the back of his head a label floats towards the Grenvilles: Take care of your Pockets--Gentlemen Broad bottoms. "The Queen and Alderman Wood head a procession through the City, all riding asses (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13918, &c.). They advance towards a group of Radical Reformers with placards who wave their hats. Notes below the design divided by vertical lines indicate the characters; these are centred by a description of the Queen, enclosed in an oval: 'Her most Gracious M.....y Columbine B--i, alias Mother Red Cap 2nd [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13975], Queen of all the Radicals, Whigs, Hoaxers &c B......i in all her looks and Brandy in her eye [see British Museum Satires No. 14175].' Wood is dressed as a jester in party-coloured clothes, red and yellow, here indicating the royal liveries used by the Queen; he takes the Queen's right hand; his right hand is on his breast, and he looks with eager anticipation at the Reformers. Behind him is the profile of Lady Ann Hamilton, who plays a fiddle; she wears a much-feathered (military) Scots cap. They are: 'Absolute Wisdom [see British Museum Satires No. 13899] alias Mathew Jackall Master of the Ceremonies--A rare specimen of disinterestedness--a keen eye for the Loaves & Fishes', and 'Lady Ann Bagpipe principal Scotch Fiddler [cf. British Museum Satires No. 14110, &c.] to her M.....y with an accompaniment of All round the Rad pole how we Flock.' The Queen wears a red cap with the décolletée over-dress with frilled trousers of British Museum Satires No. 14103, a large miniature of Bergami (see British Museum Satires No. 13858) hanging from her waist. She holds the tail of the ass which she bestrides with ungartered stocking, her shoe having fallen to the ground; on her saddle-cloth: 'B B Knight of St Columbine' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]. A fat décolletée woman, also in a red cap, rides just behind her; she is Countess Oldi, Bergami's sister (who was with the Queen in London), described as 'Countess Patois Bourgois The Elegant & Accomplished Sister of Bart.....o The Fancy-Man.' On the Queen's left rides a thin young man, Wood's son, in quasi-dandy dress with red and yellow jacket, holding a banner inscribed 'All Majesty & Grace'; he registers alarm at a small barking dog which causes his ass to stop and kick. He is 'The Dandy Standard Bearer alias Young Absolute'. Just behind a youth, Willy Austin, rides, holding two children before him: 'Billy By-Blow of Black-heath [see British Museum Satires No. 12027] in charge of the Nursery.' Next him is a man wearing a braided coat or tunic and holding up a flag inscribed 'Innocence'. He is not described, and is perhaps Keppel Craven. Close behind him is a turbaned Moor or negro (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13929), in red and yellow. They are followed by two naval officers, one in civilian dress and wearing a Maltese cross. They hold a banner between them: 'Rights and Privileges.' They are 'Lieutt Humm'en [Hownam] 1st Champion & Knight of St Columbine' and 'Lieutt Flim Flam [Flinn] 2nd Champion & Knight of the Smelling Bottle'. The last ass in the procession is ridden by a naked Bacchus, a wine-bottle in each hand, and a half-draped Woman who puts an arm round his neck. They are: 'Two Proteges and Bosom Friends of her M.....y'. The procession continues, receding in perspective to the extreme right, as a dense crowd with bludgeons, banners, and staves supporting caps of Liberty. The banners are 'Anarchy', 'Riot' (both tricolour), 'Disaffection', 'Immorality', 'Indecency'. Description: 'A long Train of concomitant Blessings to add to the Peace, Comfort, Relief, and Happiness of that first rate Martyr Broad-shouldered and patient Bull.' The radicals face the procession in the foreground (left) and are more realistically drawn than the other figures. On the extreme left is Hunt, smartly dressed, but with a chain dangling from one wrist. He is 'The Hero of Spa and Peters Fields with a day rule from Ilchester'. Next him is Wilson: 'Sir Robert Lavalette [see British Museum Satires No. 12706, &c.] of Southwark KMT [sic] & MP'. Beside him is Hobhouse: 'Jack Cam Westminster's Darling' [see British Museum Satires No. 13501]. In front of Wilson is Sir Charles Wolseley, wearing a striped straight-jacket over fashionable dress, his arms (compulsorily) folded. He is 'The Legislatorial Attorney for Brummigum [see British Museum Satires No. 13251] with a day rule from St Lukes' [a lunatic asylum]. Behind him is Cobbett: 'William Tompaine [see British Museum Satires No. 13525] Cobt Weathercock' [see British Museum Satires No. 14032, &c.]. In front of him is Burdett (now with frontal baldness in place of the former prominent lock of hair), standing between Waddington, a ragged, dwarfish fellow holding up a placard inscribed 'Long Live Mother Red Cap', and Harrison, a man with chained wrists holding up a cap of Liberty on a staff. These three are: 'Sir Frank Demagogue Westminster's Jewel'; 'Little Wadd' [see British Museum Satires No. 14261]; 'Parson Har . . s . n Founder of the Sect of Radical Methodists, with a day rule from Durance Vile' [see British Museum Satires No. 13254]. The last also supports a tall pike which dominates the group, its head inscribed 'Rallying Point'; to this are tied a cap of Liberty and two banners: 'Revolution' (red) and 'Radical Reform' (blue); the shaft transfixes a wig (emblem of the Whigs). Hunt, Wilson, Cobbett, and Burdett wave white top-hats (emblem of Hunt and the radicals) with red favours; Wilson and Waddington wear similar hats. All wear large red disks on the left breast. From the crowd standing behind them emerge placards: [1] a Harlequin pattern inscribed 'Q Columbine for ever' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]; [2] a wig, inscription: 'Q a handle to the Wig'; [3] 'Automaton for ever' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]; [4] 'Poll Acre [polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818] for Ever'. All the banners of both contingents are topped with caps of Liberty, and other caps of Liberty are supported on staves. On the cobbles in the foreground a woman and a sailor sit drinking together, she holds out her arm towards the Queen. On the right ragged men run forward, cheering the Queen. The farther side of the route is lined with butchers shouting and making rough music with marrow-bones and cleavers, as at Westminster elections. Behind these a dense crowd of spectators is indicated. Behind are the houses and (shuttered) shops of 'Bridge Street'; cheering spectators lean from all the windows and watch from the roofs. Placards on two houses are: 'Adam and Eve', two nude figures, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14120, and 'Gill Tea Figs, &c.' This block is divided from the more distant houses by 'Cannon Row'. From the roofs of the latter buildings cannon are firing at three winged figures in the air; all three fall, wounded; they are 'Decency', 'Modesty', and 'Delicacy'. "A pair of breeches, formerly belonging to Fox, much inflated and forming two merging and transparent globes with projecting legs, is poised (at the seat) on three ostrich feathers, erect in a round bed of (ministerial) roses (see BMSat 10558, &c). Within these globes members of the Ministry sit at a round table, devouring loaves and fishes. The nearest ones are in back view, and have the heavy posteriors characteristic of the Grenvilles (cf. BMSat 10530). Lord Grenville, a fish in each hand, with Lord Ellenborough on his right, Buckingham on his left., and, next the latter, Lord Temple. They sit on a cushioned bench like those of Parliament, which follows the curve of the breeches. The others, left to right from Temple, are Spencer, Windham, Erskine, Petty, Lord Holland, [Identified by his own note.] Moira, who sits full face opposite Grenville, Lauderdale, Sheridan, Howick; Sidmouth on Ellenborough's right completes the circle. All are gormandizing on fish in different degrees, except Spencer and Holland who eat normally. Before Grenville is a dish containing two large fish: 'Treasury' and 'Exchequer', see BMSat 10543, &c. A dog, its collar inscribed 'Tierney', puts its forefeet on the bench, yapping at Grenville's back (cf. BMSats 10128, &c., 10603). On the ground beside him are three cats eating fish in a dish inscribed 'Tabbeys'; their collars are inscribed 'Bet Fox', 'Fitz', and 'Jordan'. Rats surround a dish inscribed 'Scribblers' [ministerial journalists and pamphleteers]. "The House of Lords, as arranged for the Bill of Pains and Penalties, see British Museum Satires No. 13825, is seen from the right, so that the angle of the left and end walls form the centre of the design, the throne being on the right. The peers are crowded together to watch the entry of the Queen, complacently seated on a black ram with the head of Bergami; the animal wears two orders, and from its neck hangs a disc inscribed 'Santa Carolina', see British Museum Satires No. 13810. Immediately behind her walks Alderman Wood, wearing his furred gown and holding a decanter. Behind him, and in the foreground, marches Brougham, followed by Denman and Lushington. Her other followers hold long staves. A plebeian fellow in a red gown just behind the barristers may be Fellowes, her chaplain. A woman and a fashionably dressed man walking together are probably Lady Anne Hamilton and Keppel Craven, the Queen's Vice-Chancellor. From the crowd of her supporters emerges a pole supporting a cap of Liberty, and a placard: 'May our Wives be like Her' (which is against pictures of the allegations of the 'trial', see below). In the foreground (left) a ragged Savoyard sings, turning the handle of an orgue de barbarie slung from his neck. On the woolsack, in front of the peers, sits Eldon, saying "Go and Sin no more" (words quoted by Denman in his speech for the defence). On his right stands Grey, hands crossed on his breast, bowing towards the ram. Behind the Chancellor stands a peer, saying, "Innocent as our Wives." On Eldon's left stands a tall man, wearing the ribbon of St. Patrick. On the end of a bench in the right foreground sits a peer who has some resemblance to Liverpool. Behind him stands a man resembling Lord Holland. Among a crowd on the steps of the throne is Wellington. From closely seated peers (left) rises the word 'Guiltless'. In the right foreground, and screening himself by a cloth, a crouching incendiary, resembling Cobbett, holds a torch to a pile of papers. These are Addresses, with, at the base, 'Gunpowder Treason'. The other inscriptions are 'London Address', 'Leeds Address', 'Manchester Address'. The gallery (left) is crowded with spectators; against it and above the heads of those on the floor of the House is a medley of canvasses, supported on poles; on these incidents from the evidence against the Queen are depicted. [1] A Turk, Mahomet, dances (see British Museum Satires No. 13929). [2] The Princess and Bergami sit amorously together. [3] Bergami helps the Princess to dress as the Muse of History (see British Museum Satires No. 13890, &c.). [4] Bergami bathes the Princess (see British Museum Satires No. 13819, &c.). [5] Bergami and the Princess in a carriage (see British Museum Satires No. 13820). [6] The pair look from the tent on the polacca at a helmsman (see British Museum Satires No. 13818, &c.). "A sequel to British Museum Satires No. 13895. The Queen has reached the top of the column; she is blindfolded and wears a fool's cap; but the column is shattered by the radicals, and she falls backwards, dropping sceptre and firebrand. The pedestal tilts, the column is broken in three, and the summit is being hauled down by a rope tugged at by a cheering mob of radicals with pikes. Flames and towering clouds of smoke ascend from a large fire at its base, on which a Bible inscribed 'I H S' and books of 'Laws' and 'Religion' are burning. The Black Dwarf (Wooler, see British Museum Satires No. 12988), kneeling, blows it with bellows. Crown, Bible, and cushion fall from the column. Hunt cheers the catastrophe, waving his cap, as do others. There is a tricolour banner topped by a skull and inscribed 'Blood & Plunder'. Cobbett (?) is now on the top of the Queen's ladder, with (?) "Cobbett as a small boy, ragged but sturdy, eggs on a bull-dog which is mauling a cat. He has thrown to the ground tankards strung on a strap, and inscribed 'Jolly Farmer'; behind him lies his hat, filled with apples. A goose followed by goslings escapes to the right. Behind is a ramshackle thatched cottage, a country ale-house of the lowest grade with the sign on a tall post: 'The Olde Jolly Farmer of Farnham--Gaffer Cobbett'. From the doorway, closed by a half-door and serving as a window, old Cobbett looks out. He holds a frothing tankard, and grins approvingly at his son; his likeness to Cobbett shows his identity. An old woman, evidently Mrs. Cobbett, looks over his shoulder, clenching her fists angrily at the fate of the cat. On the door-posts are chequers, sign that ale is sold, and above the door: 'Goode Entertainment for Man and Beaste'. Under the thatch, in the gable, is a casement window with broken panes; on the wall is nailed a dead rat; there is also a bill headed by fighting-cocks: 'Cock Fighte--Farnham--Old Cobbett Feeder', Smoke rises from a broken cask, thrust into the thatch, and serving as a chimney. A wagoner in a smock, holding his whip, sits on a bench by the door, draining a jug. In a line with the ale-house is a latrine of dilapidated planks and of the roughest kind, by which a sow is rooting. Above it on a line hang a ragged shirt and stockings. "Cobbett, surrounded by flames and beset by ghosts, starts back in his chair, overturning his writing-table and dropping his pen. Behind him and on his right is a black replica of himself (his shadow). Over this shadow's shoulder leans the Devil, naked except for a bonnet rouge, bending menacingly towards Cobbett. In the foreground (right) the head and shoulders, in back view, of Sir Charles Gould emerge from clouds, holding up a long scroll: 'the Forfieted Pledge--"my Black Soul I pledge to the Devil for the Truth of my Accusation Wm Cobbett--Witness . . . Goold Judge' [Advocate]. On the opposite side, surrounded by clouds, are the ghosts of three officers, with blank eyes, standing stiffly behind the bar over which hangs a paper: 'Court Martial Chelsea' [see No. 11377]. The centre figure declaims: 'Remember Powel', the others add: 'Hall' and 'Seton'. Just behind and to the right of Cobbett the arms of a woman holding the equally balanced scales and the flaming sword of 'Justice' emerge from flames. Her head is covered by a large scroll: 'the Groans of Hampshire with the Cries of Little Jessey and the Screams of his blasted Brandy-Faced Bitch of a Mother'. Behind the Devil, and partly concealed by a festooned curtain, is the wall of a pawnshop as in No. 11376, with the sign of three balls; over the doorway: 'Beelzebub Pawnb[roker] Nota Bene. Damag'd Souls taken in Pawn'. Four bat-like creatures fly away, upwards and to the left. Three have human heads and are Wardle, nearest to Cobbett, Burdett, and (?) Horne Tooke. From Cobbett's tilting table ink, pens, candle-sticks, and lighted candles fall to the ground, the candles setting fire to the many papers which have fallen and are falling: two copies of 'Cobbett's Political Register' are already blazing. Three other copies are still on the table, one inscribed: 'Cobbetts Register--The Hell-Fire-War in Spain--Oh damn Wellesley'. Other copies have titles referring to the tenor of actual and imaginary articles in the Register: 'Plan for to Hang up all the Public Robbers without Judge or Jury'; 'Hints on ye Rights of Napoleone the Great to the Throne of Great Britain'; 'The Jubilee--a Damned Ministerial Humbug upon the country'; Cobbett's Political Register--. . . Navy . . .'; 'Stupidity of the Whigs'; 'Bank Notes our Rum'; 'New Parliamentary Reform'; 'Necessity of a new Party'; 'Blasted Ignorance of Ministry'."--British Museum online catalogue

"Cobbett, dressed as a farmer, but with a favour in his hat and his short hair tied back into a scraggy tail, marches stiffly behind a recruiting Serjeant who marches with drawn sword, preceded by a little drummer-boy beating a large drum, both of whom wear plumed bearskins, smart uniform, and boots. They march with pointed toe; Cobbet follows, out of step, and with clumsily upturned toe; on his back is a rough knapsack. They march towards the sea where boats are being rowed out to a ship in full sail (right). Behind Cobbett (left) are his plough and two oxen. The field is neatly furrowed. Behind is a rocky hill on which stands a gibbet with an empty noose."--British Museum online catalogue

"Cobbett, a burly and youthful corporal, stands with raised cane and clenched fist, having chastised two officers, older and much smaller than himself. One clutches his posterior, and runs off to the left, the other, losing his hat, throws up his arms, and a copy of a small book: 'Cobbetts Cards or new Military Tacticks'. Five others stand behind Cobbett, waiting for instruction, all studying his cards with perplexed and anxious intentness. Three are inscribed respectively: 'Cobbett's Military Cards'; 'How to Run away'; 'Eyes left'. One of them holds a furled Union flag inscribed 'Victoria'. In the foreground is an open dispatch-box, inscribed 'Wm Cobbett' and 'Cobbetts Military Movements'. Papers overflow on to the ground, inscribed: 'Cobbetts new Cards of Discipline', 'How to turn out Toes', 'How to Fart to ye Right', 'Eyes Right', 'To the Right', 'To the Le[ft]', 'How to march Forward', 'How to Run away', 'shoulder Musquet[s]'; 'How to shoulder Musquets', 'Left Right, how to hold up Heads', In the middle distance is a parade-ground: an officer is drilling his men with raised sword, while studying one of Cobbett's cards. They have a tricolour flag inscribed Loyal 51stt Regt L E Fi[tzgerald]. In the background are tents with tricolour flags, and tiny men marching.
