"A sequel to BMSat 10540. George III, as a farmer in a smock, drives his pigs, now very plump, out of his farmyard and down a cliff into a turbulent sea. They have burst through a rotten paling; the foremost are struggling in huge waves, the last, the reluctant Sheridan, is propelled by the farmer's boot. The King says: "O you cursed ungrateful Grunters! - what, after devouring more in a twelve-month, than the good old Litter did in twelve years, you turn round to kick and bite your old Master! but if the Devil or the Pope has got possession of you all - pray get out of my Farm yard! - out with you all - no hangers behind! - you're all of a cursed bad-breed; so out with you altogether!!!" Behind him is the old sow in front of a thatched hovel, backed by trees. Among pigs who have already reached the sea is Howick, on his back on a billowing wave; beside him floats a paper: 'Repeal of the Test Act'. Behind him the head of Lord Holland looks up wistfully. Lord Grenville is carried downwards, one forefoot on a paper: 'Emancipation of the Catholic Army and Navy', while the (torn) 'Catholic Bill' floats before him. His body is covered with a distended skin of guineas, in reference to his two highly paid offices, see BMSat 10543, &c. Next, the hind-legs and vast rump of Lord Temple project from the water; beside him is a paper: 'Last Stake of the Broad Bottom Family', see BMSat 10721. Beside him is an almost submerged barrel of 'Whitbread's Entire' [see BMSat 10421], from which project the hind-legs of the drowning Whitbread. Next behind these, and about to plunge into the waves, are Lord St. Vincent, wearing a naval coat, Buckingham in spectacles and Garter ribbon, Bedford (Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland), from whose neck falls a ribbon inscribed 'Erin-Go-Bragh'. Just behind St. Vincent and Buckingham are Windham, Fitzpatrick (on his back), and Petty; next above these: the Duke of Norfolk, Erskine wearing his Chancellor's wig, Lauderdale, his body covered with tartan, and Spencer, with Moira close behind Bedford. The latest pigs to leave the ground are Ellenborough in his wig, Courtenay, Sidmouth, Derby, Carlisle, and Tierney; a little apart from the others Sheridan (cf. BMSat 10697), his body covered with Harlequin's chequered coat (cf. BMSat 9916), still has his hind-legs on the edge of the cliff. Portions of six other pigs appear in the mélée. "Conspirators prepare an explosion in the vaults of the House of Commons (or of a building symbolizing the Constitution). Massive triple pillars support Gothic arches, the inscription [used by George as a title] etched across the centre pillar round which barrels of gunpowder are piled. The scene is lit by a beam of light slanting from the huge eye of the King whose features emerge faintly from an illuminated patch in dark clouds in the upper right. corner of the design. This strikes the conspirators, all wearing cloaks and steeple-crowned hats reminiscent of Guy Fawkes. The foremost is Grenville who pours on to the paved floor a train of powder from a barrel which he holds, inscribed 'Jesuits Powder'. Next him (r.) Howick leans forward to tilt a barrel of 'True- Whig Gunpowder'. Behind is Lauderdale handling a barrel of 'Gunpowder a la Brissot'. On the extreme left. behind Grenville, Sidmouth crouches, clasping with senile impotence a barrel of 'Cathartic Gun Powder' [cf. BMSat 9849]. Behind stands Petty holding a barrel of 'Pop-Gun Powder'. The taller Windham is behind with a barrel of '[M]etaphysical Gu[n Powder]'. Ellenborough scowls over Windham's shoulder. The tall Moira (ex-Master of the Ordnance) has a barrel of 'Ordnance Powder'. "Plate from the 'Scourge', viii, before p. 83. The Regent sits on a throne wearing academic cap, gown, and bands, and holding a huge birch-rod. Poised on his cap is a tiny merry-go-round; on the central post Punch, wearing a fool's cap, postures on one toe; on the rim are a tiny car, a donkey, goose, &c. His legs are wide apart and he has some resemblance to Henry VIII. He addresses Princess Charlotte who stands on the right, walking away but hindered by the Duke of York whom she tries to push aside. Beside the throne are Eldon and Ellenborough. Eldon (left), wears his Chancellor's wig and gown, a bag over his shoulder, his left hand on the right arm of the throne. Ellenborough sits at the Regent's left. A cross in the form of a pillory hangs from his neck; this is combined with a circle inscribed 'Croix de Pillory' forming a cross of Iona type. He holds a book: 'Magna Charta'. Beside him, and at the foot of the throne, are a birch-rod and a bag labelled 'Thumscrews & gags'. On a stool (left) next Eldon sits a fat and jovial bishop (the Archbishop of Canterbury) holding a bottle, and a large paper which he is reading: 'an old Song to a new Tune / I know my trade / Which tho it be made / By some a mighty serious / occupation, / I have found that to laugh / Is better by half / And more likely to get / a presentation / Tis all a mere hum / To stand preaching humdrum / And telling old Tales of / repentance / You had better burlesque / Both pulpit and desk / And turn up your female acquaintance / So bein ....' A roll of 'Old Songs Humorous Amorous &c', and a book (of old jests): 'Joe Miller', lie at his feet. Neglected behind his stool lies a book of 'Com[mon] Pray[er]'. The Regent says to his daughter: "I have sent for you my Dear Girl, to give you advice--for the future you must look up to me, as a pattern of Chastity, Sobriety, and Fidelity--I have just dismissed your late attendants, and intend now to teach you these virtues by my own precept and example--you will henceforward live under my roof--if you dont Obey--Mind--this!!" [his birch-rod]. Lord Eldon: "If you will allow me Sir! to send my wife to her, she will teach her how to Obey, I'll answer for it and that Scott free!!" Ellenborough: "Don't mind Brother Bags I'd have every body know what the Law can do it can decorate a Lord with the Croix de St Pillory, why not a Lady!" The Princess: "I wont stay Uncle--I won't be a Prisoner--I don't care for all the Bishops and Lords in the Kingdom, I'll put my self under the protection of some Coach'ee and drive to my Mother that I will!" The Duke of York answers: "No No my dear! must not run away from School Nuncky will pet it and Nurse it and Nunckys deary shant fret that it shant." He wears a military coat over a surplice, and a mitre projects from his coat-pocket. The Archbishop, turning from the conclave and absorbed in his song, says: "Fore George but this is a good one I must get into the right tune." The throne is an elaborate quasi-Chinese, quasi-Gothic erection, the top of the canopy with the Prince's feathers cut off by the upper margin, leaving the words 'Qui Pense'. The canopy is edged by bells. Below it are two winged cherubs' heads, both shedding tears. The arms are inscribed respectively 'Wisdom' and 'Activity', Eldon leaning against the former, Ellenborough against the latter. In a niche beneath the left arm are two bottles: 'Curr[açoa]' and 'Brandy'; the corresponding right niche is hidden by Ellenborough. On each side of the throne and above the heads of the two judges is an alcove containing large volumes: (left) 'Rule a Wife and [have a wife', John Fletcher's comedy, 1624, revived by Garrick]; 'Gullivers Travels'; 'Gack the Gian Killer' [sic]; 'Tom Thumb'; 'Family Quarrels a Novel in one Vol.' On the right: 'Little Red Riding Hood'; 'Law and Equity'; 'Duty of Jurymen by Veritas'; 'Life of John Bull'. These alcoves are flanked by large pictures partly cut off by the upper margin and concealed by labels enclosing speeches. On the left is 'Char[les the Se]cond', on the right 'Pri[nce Re]gent', a realistic rendering of his paunch and legs. At his feet is a scroll inscribed 'A Chines Bridge'. Priestley leans over the left edge of the pulpit, his right arm raised; flames issuing from his mouth expand into four columns of smoke inscribed respectively 'Atheism' (smaller than the others), 'Deism', 'Socinianism', 'Arianism'. This blast strikes an angel carrying a cross; he flies out of a window (left), looking over his shoulder at Priestley with an expression of horror. "A complicated design: advocates for religious toleration in a church, the pulpit occupied by Priestley, Price, and Lindsey. The central figure is Price, to whom the clerk standing below has passed up in a cleft stick a paper inscribed: 'The Prayers of this Congregation are desired for the Success of the patriot Members of the national Assembly now sitting in France'. Price takes the paper, and, raising his left hand sanctimoniously, says: "And now Let us fervently pray for the Abolition of all unlimited and limit[ed] Monarchy, for the Annihilation of all ecclesiastical Revenues and Endowments, for the Extinction of all Orders of Nobility and all rank and Subordination in civil Society and that Anarchy and Disorder may by our pious Endeavours prevail throughout the Universe - See my Sermon on the Anniversary of the Revolution" (see BMSat 7629, &c). Priestley leans over the left edge of the pulpit, his right arm raised; flames issuing from his mouth expand into four columns of smoke inscribed respectively 'Atheism' (smaller than the others), 'Deism', 'Socinianism', 'Arianism'. This blast strikes an angel carrying a cross; he flies out of a window (left), looking over his shoulder at Priestley with an expression of horror. Through the window is also seen a church steeple, being pulled down by a rope. Seated in a pew below is Fox (left) who looks up at the preacher, smiling; a similar column of smoke issues from his mouth and rises towards Priestley, inscribed 'Hear hear hear'. Lindsey leans over the right side of the pulpit, holding out 'A Table of the Thirty nine Articles' in a frame, this he tears to pieces. The back of the pulpit, above Price's head, is ornamented with an inverted and irradiated triangle containing the letters 'PPL', the initials of the three preachers. Above it is suspended a marquess's coronet with Lord Lansdowne's beehive crest. On the sounding-board are (left) two books: 'Priestley on civil Government' and 'Price on civil Liberty'. Beside them hangs from the roof a striped flag inscribed 'America' (Price's 'Observations on civil liberty . . .' (1776) had encouraged the Declaration of Independence, see BMSat 5644). On the books stands a small demon. Another demon, wearing the steeple-crowned hat of the puritans of the Commonwealth, sits on an open book (right) inscribed 'a Sermon on the Anniversary of the glorious Revolution'. Beneath the pulpit is a pew running across the church from left to right and containing the clerk's desk. In this sits Fox (left); facing him in profile to the left is Dr. Abraham Rees looking through a large magnifying-glass at a large open volume inscribed 'Bacons liber Regis' and 'Cantuar'. On the clerk's desk is a paper: 'Ye are desired to take Notice That a Vestry will be held on Tuesday to take into Consideration some necessary Reforms both in the Church and State'. Behind and between these two is a shadowy head, partly obliterated by the smoke issuing from Fox, identified as Sir Henry Hoghton. Next him is a woman with the closed eyes and upturned face of an enthusiast; she holds out an open book: 'Margt Nicholson her Book' (see BMSat 6973, &c). Seated in profile to the right is Dr. Kippis. Standing beside him is Lord Stanhope, smiling, his head turned in profile to the left. He tears in half a paper inscribed: 'Acts of Parliamt for the Uniformity of Common Prayer, and Service in ye Church and Administration of the Sacraments'. Beneath his elbow is a paper: 'Heads of a Bill for the Abolition of Tithes and other ecclesiastical Endowm[ents]'. In front of the pulpit the central figure is an exciseman standing with his back to the pulpit and looking over his shoulder at Stanhope with a smile. An ink-bottle is attached to his coat, under his arm is a book inscribed 'Excise'. His folded hands rest on the head of a cane, the tip of which is in a chalice which stands at his feet. Under his foot is a paper: 'Order for the Ministration of the holy Communion'. He is gauging a Communion cup, and is evidently Thomas Paine. Next him (right) in back view, kneeling, is a bishop, with enormous lawn sleeves; he is identified by Miss Banks as Edward Law, Bishop of Carlisle, but an open book in front of him is inscribed 'Watson Tracts', suggesting that he is Watson of Llandaff, cf. BMSat 7419. In the foreground on the left a kneeling man is flinging out the contents of an open chest on which are a bishop's escutcheon, and a female figure with a cross and chalice, probably representing religion. He throws out a large book: 'The Book of Common Prayer' to join a book of 'Homilies'. Beside this lie a mitre, a crozier, a chalice, a communion plate with bread at which rats are nibbling, a paper: 'The Communion of Saints, &c.' Looking over the shoulder of this despoiler of the Church is a bearded Jew, his hands raised in admiration, saying, "O vat fine plaat I vil give you de Monies for it Sar." On the right and in profile to the left sits a soldier, with the lank hair and upward gaze of the enthusiast; he holds his sabre by the scabbard. In his right hand is a steeple-crowned hat. Behind him sits a shadowy worshipper, full face, with upturned head and clasped hands. In the foreground on the extreme right a beadle is seated on the floor asleep. His hat is inscribed 'Oliver Condable St James'. Beside him are a dog and an open book: 'Killing no Murder a Sermon for the 30th of January'. Above the back of a pew on the extreme right is part of the back of a wig, identified as that of the Lord Mayor. A large mace is beside it, and a pillar surmounted by the Royal Arms: the lion is headless and in place of the crown is a puritan's steeple-crowned hat. Through a doorway inscribed 'Sanctum Sanctor[um]' is a three quarter length portrait in an oval frame of Oliver Cromwell. From a gallery in the upper right corner of the design, a ruffianly looking man leans over with a clenched fist, saying, "No Test no Bishops". "A satire on the peace negotiations and on Windham's Training Act. The scene is outside the 'Treasury', the lower part of its façade forming the background. Ministers and their supporters as 'Corporal and Conscripts' obey the orders of their 'Drill-Serjeant' Napoleon, who stands on the extreme left., his jack-boots firmly planted on cannon-balls him height. He extends his sword with an arrogant gesture, and fiercely orders: "Ground - Arms!" Next him, and in back view, but looking up at him, is Fox seated in an invalid's wheeled chair on the back of which are the coronet and feathers of the Prince of Wales. He is 'Grand Double Drums' and is vigorously beating a pair of kettle-drums, one inscribed 'GR' and crown, the other 'N' and crown. He wears a dressing-gown and bonnet rouge, and his enormously distended legs are straddled outside his drums. On Fox's r. is the 'Flugel Man', Grenville, going through the movement as a pattern to the other privates. He kneels on the left knee and grounds his musket, putting up his hand to shield his eyes; his bayonet is broken, as is its sheath. The 'Corporal & Conscripts' drawn up (r.) facing Napoleon attempt the movement with extreme awkwardness and obsequious haste, not excepting Windham the corporal, the end man (r.) of the front rank. Next him is Lord Holland, on both knees, with an amiable smile. Then Sheridan, very bulky and awkward, but unlike the others directing his musket towards Napoleon. Petty, on both knees, flings down his musket with an obsequious gesture. Next him Lord Temple grovels displaying spherical posteriors. Next, at the end of the line, and close to the gate of the Treasury, kneels Erskine, in wig and gown, raising his hat. In the second rank, behind Windham, is Howick, First Lord, deferentially raising a naval cocked hat; Sidmouth staggers back, throwing up his arms and dropping his musket which lands on his face. Next are Spencer, clumsily lifting his musket, and Ellenborough in wig and gown, with a blunderbuss which he seems about to dash violently on the ground. Behind him is Moira, stiff and tall, in uniform with cocked hat, holding up a musket exploding at lock and barrel. Behind and in shadow are (l. to r.) St. Vincent, Hanger, and the Duke of Clarence, all holding up the muskets which the next rank prevents them from grounding. Most of the 'conscripts' wear civilian dress with crossed bandoleers, and are in most unsoldierly confusion. By the Treasury gate and facing Erskine stands the 'Constable of the Corps', Talleyrand, holding a long constable's staff, crowned, his left. arm extended in a gesture of command; one twisted leg is supported by a stilt under the shoe. As ex-Bishop of Autun (see BMSat 8088) he wears a hat whose crown is a mitre, a long gown and bands over his coat, and a rosary. In his mouth is a pen. Above his head a bird with webbed wings and the head of Lauderdale flies towards Fox, clutching a paper: 'Terms of Peace'. In his mouth is a completely are olive branch.
