"Courtenay (right), as the chairman of a tavern club, sits at the head of an oblong table, in profile to the left, smoking. He says to George Hanger, who faces him at the foot of the table: "I say, Georgey how do Things look now?" The words issue from his mouth in a cloud of smoke. Hanger answers: "Ax my Grandmother's Muff, pray do!" He holds a pipe, his wine-glass is overturned. His bludgeon is thrust in his top-boot. On Hanger's right sits Fox, leaning back in his chair, registering extravagant amusement and saying "O charming! - charming!" Opposite Fox sits Sheridan, clasping a decanter of 'Brandy' in one hand, a glass in the other. He says, with a sly smile, "Excellent! - damme Georgey, Excellent." Next him, and on Courtenay's right, sits M. A. Taylor, flourishing his pipe and saying, "Bravo! the best Thing I ever heard said, damme." On the table are decanters of 'Mum' and of 'Champaig[n]'. Above Courtenay's head is a picture of a simian creature in a cap of Liberty, squatting on the ground and smoking a pipe. The frame is inscribed 'Juvenal'. "The reduction of the Prince of Wales's establishment at Carlton House is represented as the auction scene in 'The School for Scandal' (iv. 1). 'Lot 1', a portrait of the King and Queen, as a farmer and his wife, a copy of BMSat 6934 reversed, is being held up for sale by (?) Sheridan. The Prince, as Charles Surface, stands in the middle of the room, legs apart, his cane raised above his head, right hand in his breeches-pocket, saying, "Careless, Knock down the Farmer". George Hanger as Careless stands in a high-backed arm-chair (right), his hammer raised above his head, saying, "Going for no more than One Crown". Weltje, a stout man, stands beside the rostrum, his arms folded, looking down at a pile of plate at his feet inscribed 'Lot 6'. On the left stand three men: the bidder, pencil and note-book in his hand, saying, "Five shillings for that Lot", and two military officers, one stout, the other slim and foppish, looking through an eye-glass at the picture. 'Lot 2' and 'Lot 3' are pictures still on the wall, Three quarter length portraits of Mrs. Fitzherbert, her hands in a muff, and a lady wearing a large feathered hat, perhaps the Duchess of Devonshire, cf. BMSat 6961, &c. 'Lot 5' is a saddle on the floor beside a pair of top-boots. "A crowded scene in a bare room giving access to the theatre, which is seen through two open doors (right), each showing two boxes, and a section of gallery above, filled with spectators. Courtesans and ladies are being inspected and addressed by the loungers. The centre figure is George Hanger in profile to the left, his club under his arm, arms folded, staring at a bold and handsome girl who stands with another pretty young woman. A man in deep shadow seizes Hanger's bunch of seals. Two elderly men address a fat bawd who holds a basket of fruit and playbills; a coin is placed in her hand. A misshapen elderly beau (not, as Grego suggests, Sir L. Skeffington, b. 1771), looking through a quizzing-glass, steps on an irate lady's dress (right). On the wall is a large play-bill: 'Theatre Royal Covent Garden \ Way of the World \ Who's the Dupe'. "Fantastic insects (l.), with human heads assail a hive (r.) standing on a low and very solid wooden stand, the 'Treasury-Bench'; ministerial bees emerge to defend it. The apex of the hive is a royal crown from which sprout ears of straw. In the upper left. corner is the grotesque body of Sidmouth terminating in a clyster-pipe inscribed 'Clysteria Ministeria'; the wings are bottles inscribed 'Emetic' and 'Cathartic' [cf. BMSat 9849]. Above him flies the head of (?) Fitzpatrick between wings inscribed 'Hedge Lane' and 'Chick-lane' (London slums and resorts of prostitutes). An adjacent aquiline profile resembles George Hanger. Below, and to the right., is Lauderdale, his wings patterned with tartan. Above (r.) is Erskine, in barrister's wig and bands, both wings inscribed 'Protest'. Next (r.), Moira is supported on ostrich-feather wings, indicating the Prince of Wales (see, e.g., BMSat 10253). Immediately below him is Grattan, with a barbed tail, his wings inscribed 'Irish Emancipation' [cf. BMSat 10404]. Next, and in the forefront, is Grey, like a dragon-fly (and striped blue and buff), his four wings inscribed 'Vanity'. In the next row below are (l. to r.) Ellenborough with malevolent features framed in a judge's wig; Bedford, his wings inscribed 'Disappointment'; Sheridan, his bloated body patterned like Harlequin (cf. The huge Temple has wings made of sheets of paper, inscribed 'Stationary', 'Fools-Cap', 'Gilt Post', and 'Wax', 'Pens', 'Wafers' [see BMSat 10721, &c.]. He spits copiously at the defenders. Next is the age-worn profile of Grafton. In the row below are (l. to r.) Lord Holland, with wings inscribed 'Volponean Rancour' [as nephew and devoted pupil of Fox, cf. BMSat 9892] and 'Kalpinist [Hindu] Subtilty'. Next, Lord Spencer, his wings inscribed 'Cunning Policy', and (behind) the profile of Lord Carlisle. Next, and immediately below his son Temple, is Buckingham, in spectacles and Garter ribbon, directing a blast from his 'broad bottom' against the crown on the hive. "A crowded scene, the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society are dressing and rehearsing. The design may derive from Hogarth's 'Actresses dressing in a Barn' (BMSat 2403), Gillray stressing the contrast between his luxurious mise-en-scène and the squalor of Hogarth's players. The centre figure is Lady Buckinghamshire, enormous, florid, and gorgeous, her skirts outspread, standing before a dressing-table, touching one of many patches on her face and holding her part, that of 'Roxana' [in Lee's tragedy, 'The Rival Queens; or the Death of Alexander the Great']. Under her dressing-table is a square bottle of 'Usquebaugh' and a glass. On Roxana's l., with her back to the dressing-table, sits Lady Salisbury, her legs crossed and much exposed, pulling on a laced boot. Her neck is swathed with a spotted cravat as in BMSat 9908. Near her on the floor are the second boot, a pair of breeches, and her part: 'the Part of Squire Groom to be per[formed], by [Lady Salisbu]ry'. She gazes at the huge Lord Cholmondeley who stands in profile to the left., dominating the left. of the design. He is dressed as Cupid; a tunic covered with a design of ring-doves, hearts, arrows, and cross a torches defines a vast paunch across which is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Amor Vincit Omnia'. He has butterfly wings, massive quiver filled with heavy arrows, and holds an arrow in his left hand. He stands impassively, his head wreathed with flowers. In the foreground, in front of Cholmondeley stands the tiny Lord Mount Edgcumbe in a swaggering attitude, studying his part: 'Alexander the Great', as in BMSat 9916. He wears armour, with a swathed cravat and vandyked ruff, and a helmet on which is a dragon spitting fire. Facing Cholmondeley and immediately behind Lady Salisbury is little Lord Derby blowing a French horn. Behind is a group of musicians: Lord Carlisle (l.) blows the bassoon with a melancholy expression, facing Lord Salisbury who pompously plays a small fiddle. Between them is Col. "John Bull crouches on hands and knees on a flat-topped rock: 'Rock of Broad-Bottom'd Security' [cf. BMSats 10530]. On his back is an enormous money-bag: 'The Sinking-Fund - i.e - Taxations of 42 Millions pr Annum'. Petty stands astride on the guineas in the gaping mouth of the bag, shovelling a cascade of coins to greedy ministerialists who stand below, outside the stone gateway of the 'Treasury', whose wall is on the left John, a yokel, out-at-elbows, looks up to say mournfully: " - Toss away! Toss away! my good Boy! toss away!!! - oh how kind it is, to ease me of this Terrible Load!" Petty, looking down, answers: "Patience, Johnny! - ar'nt I tossing-away as fast as I can? ar'nt I reducing of your Taxes to sh/17 & 6d in the Pound? - why you ought to think yourself quite comfortable & Easy, Johnny!" Those nearest the rock are Windham and the fat Lord Temple, with his back to it, catching the coins that overflow from a great heap in the peer's robe which his uncle, Grenville, holds up. Between Grenville and Windham the Marquis of Buckingham has a brimming hat-full. Behind Buckingham' Howick holds up a large hat high above his head. Sidmouth, bending obsequiously, catches some of the overflow from Grenville's store; between him and Temple, a dog, its collar inscribed 'Vansit[tart]' gapes for the small droppings from his master's receptacle (he was Secretary of the Treasury). Behind Grenville, Ellenborough receives a heavy shower on his head. Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), his wooden sword held behind his back, holds out with a servile gesture a (full) bonnet rouge shaped like a fool's cap. Behind him, Lauderdale, in Highland dress, holds out a Scots cap. Towering above Sheridan, Moira holds up an enormous cocked hat, trimmed with the Prince's feathers, and receives, after Grenville, the largest harvest of coin. In his right. hand are papers: 'Price of Stocks'. Between him and Ellenborough, the Duke of Clarence holds up a chamber-pot, inscribed 'Royal Jordan' [see BMSat 7909, &c.]. Behind him is the head of the Duke of York. Erskine, on the left, holds out the Purse of the Great Seal. Next him are Spencer, holding up a cocked hat, and Norfolk, holding up a punch-bowl, inscribed 'Majesty of the People', the toast given by him, which, inter alia, led to his rightemoval from the Privy Council (see BMSat 9168, &c). An aquiline profile, next Norfolk, suggests George Hanger. A youthful face on the extreme left. may indicate Lord Holland.
