"Napoleon's flaming nest is the terrestrial globe, resting on sheaves of bayoneted muskets laid on a flat-topped pinnacle inscribed 'Pyrenean Mountains'. Clouds and crags frame the design. The phoenix, with flaming wings, has the head of Napoleon, turned in profile to the left. He is terror-stricken; his blazing crown flies upwards from his head; his predatory claws are raised in horror; from one his sceptre falls, from the other the orb. He wears a high military collar; round his neck is a tricolour'Cordon d'Honor' fringed with daggers. On the globe is a map of countries surrounding the Mediterranean, the central spot being 'Corsica'. The burning countries are 'Portugal', 'Spain', 'France', 'Sicily' [south of Corsica], 'Germany', 'Italy', 'Turkey'. At the base of the globe is the north of 'Africa' with 'Morocco' and 'Algiers' [in flames]. Above the flames by which Napoleon is surrounded are heavy clouds; from above these emerges a dove holding an olive branch, its wings inscribed 'Peace on Earth'. "Addington and Napoleon face each other defiantly across a narrow channel. Addington, the nearer, is the larger, and much the taller. He wears regimentals, cocked hat, and shapeless boots; he stands with arms akimbo, sabre in his hand; from each pocket projects a medicine-bottle, one labelled 'Composing Draft', the other 'Stimulating Draft'. He looks at Napoleon with a chop-fallen stare, saying, "who's afraid? damme? - \ O Lord. O Lord - what a Firey Fellow he is! \ - Who's afraid? damme? \ O dear! what will become of ye Roast Beef? \ damme! who's afraid? \ O dear! O dear." (The lines are alternately in large and tiny letters to distinguish between words spoken aloud and to himself.) He straddles across a steaming sirloin on a dish inscribed: 'O the Roast Beef of Old England'. Napoleon, who straddles even more widely, holds the hilt of his sabre; his head is large, his cocked hat grotesquely huge. "Two skaters strike attitudes in the foreground. One (l.), with hands on hips, describes a curve on the outside edge of the left. foot, the r. foot being held out stiffly. He looks aggressively towards the other, a younger man who bends his knees, arms extended, and grins at his rival. The former wears a spencer over a short coat, the latter a tail coat; both wear Hessian boots, but those of the latter, who is more fashionably dressed, reach to the knee and are tasselled. "A monster, representing Austria, puts to flight a disorderly rabble of French soldiers who fall over each other in their haste. He has enormous legs which are joined to his shoulders, probably to indicate that he is 'nobody' (cf. BMSat 5570); his head consists of a large military cap, decorated with the Habsburg eagle, from which issue enormous moustaches and two puffs of smoke (from simulated nostrils); he smokes a large curved metal pipe, and from his supposed mouth issues a blast of smoke directed against the French troops. His legs are arrogantly astride, his arms akimbo, he wears a huge sabre and spurred jack-boots. The French soldiers in the foreground are ragged and ill-armed, one holds a pitchfork, those behind have muskets. One holds up a tricolour flag inscribed 'Liberta[s]' and cries "La Liberté! La Liberté - de s'enfuir". In the upper left corner of the design is etched: '"While loyal honour warm'd a Fr'enchmans breast, "The field of Battle was a glorious test; "Nobly ambitious for his King to fight, "To die or conquer was a Soldiers Right. "Pitt (left) as a bank-clerk, very thin and much caricatured, a pen thrust through his wig, stands behind an L-shaped counter offering a handful of bank-notes to John Bull. In his right hand is a scoop with which he sweeps up notes from the counter. John is the yokel of BMSat 8141, but no longer bewildered; he stands stolidly, holding out his left hand for the notes, his right hand in his coat pocket. Fox (right), who wears a high cocked hat with tricolour cockade, bag-wig, and laced suit, says to him: "Dont take his damn'd Paper, John! insist upon having Gold, to make your Peace with the French, when they come". Sheridan bends towards John, saying, "Dont take his Notes! nobody takes Notes now! - they'll not even take Mine!" John answers: "I wool take it! - a' may as well let my Measter Billy hold the Gold to keep away you Frenchmen, as save it, to gee it you, when ye come over, with your domn'd invasion." Behind (right) hands of other Foxites are raised in warning, and on the extreme right is the profile of Stanhope. Behind (left), men hasten towards Pitt with large sacks of notes on their heads. The first two, in judge's robes, are Loughborough with a sack of '20 Shilling Notes', and Kenyon with one of 'Five Pound Notes'. Behind is Grenville with a sack of '10 Shilling Notes'.
