"The arms of two gibbets extend symmetrically, high above a bonfire; between them is an equally high post supporting a board on which the title is etched. From one (right) dangles a realistic effigy of Napoleon (scarcely caricatured) in cocked hat, uniform, and Hessian boots. From the other hangs a ruffianly fellow holding a dark lantern. They face each other in profile. The fire is under Napoleon; smoke and flames drift towards Guy Faux. Country people cheer the bonfire, with two boys capering hand in hand in the centre foreground. Below the design (an alternative title): 'Bonfire at Thorpe Hall near Louth Lincolnshire on 5th Novr 1813 given by ye Revd W. Below is etched in two columns (left): 'GUY FAUX'S DYING SPEECH I Guy Vaux meditating my Country's ruin by the clandestine and diabolical means of Gunpowder Plot, was most fortunately discovered and brought to condign punishment by Old England and here I bewail my fate.' / 'NAPOLEON BUONAPARTES DYING SPEECH [right]. I Napoleon Buonaparte flattered by all The French Nation that I was invincible, have most cruelly and most childishly attempted the subjugation of the World, I have lost my fleets, I have lost the largest and finest armies ever heard of, and I am now become the indignation of the World, and the scorn and sport of boys. Had I not spurned the firm wisdom of the Right Hon. Wm Pitt I might have secured an honourable Peace. I might have governed the greatest Nation but Alas my ambition had decieved me and Pitts plans have ruined me.'"--British Museum online catalogue

"Bonaparte (right) stands in profile to the left, directing with outstretched right arm the Grenadiers who, at the point of the bayonet, are ejecting the Council of Five Hundred from the Orangery. The members, in their official costume (see BMSat 9198), flee in wild confusion. Officers (right) stand behind Bonaparte; a little drummer fiercely beats a drum inscribed 'Vive la Liberte'. A tricolour flag is inscribed 'Vive le Triumverate Buonaparte Seyes-Ducos'. All are caricatured except Bonaparte, who is calm and dignified, though with (dagger) wounds on face and arms. He tramples on 'Un liste de Membres du Conseil des Cinque Cents' which lies beside a paper: 'Resignation des Directoires'."--British Museum online catalogue

"A British sailor, firmly planted astride the globe, is severely punishing Bonaparte, who, with one knee precariously on 'Turk[ey]' (Egypt), is about to fall backwards into space. Bonaparte wears a huge cocked hat, is naked from the waist, but wears sleeve-ruffles, according to the old gibe on the beggarly French fop. He is much emaciated, and gashed with wounds; 'Nelson' is inscribed on his solar plexus. Blood gushes from his nose. Jack Tar's right leg stretches across central Europe, the toe supported on 'Malta'. Clouds form a background."--British Museum online catalogue

"Two designs placed side by side, the title so arranged that 'The Contrast' applies to both, the first four and last two words to the two designs respectively. [1] A scene outside Jaffa where the French flag flies from a fort on a rock at whose base are hospital tents (left), in which the sick can be seen. In the foreground Napoleon (a poor portrait) points with an imperious gesture to a bottle of 'Opium' in the hand of a distressed doctor in civilian dress. He says: "Don't talk to me of Humanity & the feelings of a generous heart, I say Poison those Sick dogs they are a burthen to me, & can no longer fight my Battles!!! I say destroy them - As for those Turks, them up in the Garrison, turn all the Guns upon them, Men, Women, & Children & blow them to atoms, they are too bold & resolute for me to suffer them to live, they are in my Way." In the middle distance (left) is a body of Turks, their arms tied behind them, guarded by a French soldier who points at Napoleon. Behind Napoleon two French officers exchange glances, acutely dismayed at the orders." ... [2] Two black soldiers, in neat regimentals, prepare to kill three haggard French officers. One raises an axe to smite a bound prisoner. Two British officers (left) interpose with outstretched arms; one says: "We know they are our Enemies, & yours, & the Enemies of all Mankind, nevertheless Humanity is so strongly planted in the Breast of an Englisman [sic], that he can become an humble beggar, for the lives, even of his enemies, when they are subdued." The other adds: "A mercy unexpected, undeserved surprises more."--British Museum online catalogue
