A group of drawings that illustrate select scenes from Laurence Sterne's novel The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman. The drawings vary in level of detail and completeness; one is a slight pencil sketch, two are more detailed drawings in pen and ink over pencil, and three are elaborate drawings in ink and wash. The drawings are bound in as either the frontispiece or before the frontispiece, one in each of the six volumes of the eighth edition of the work. Several of the compositions were later engraved, presumably from larger designs by Bunbury

Laurence Sterne stands on the left facing Death who has just come in the door (right) carrying an hourglass and carrying a walking stick. On the wall behind him is a map of the fortifications of Namur and on the table by his side, a statue of Diana of the Ephesians under a glass dome (bell glass) as well as a feather pen in an ink stand. Below the table is a jackboot. Between the two columns of verse below the image in a cartouche is a butterfly fluttering over a torch, a reference to the soul

Abstract:
A scene from Tristram Shandy in which Susannah stands holdings her nose with her right hand while in her left she holds a candle over the cradle where the swaddled infant Tristram lies with a plaster on his nose. She addressed the doctor with obvious fury, her mouth agape. On the left Dr. Slop raises his left fist at her while in his right he holds a cataplasm in a ladle, ready to fling at her. His hat lies at his feet, and his wig is ablaze. Obadiah stands behind him carrying in his hands a chamber pot and a bowl, a medicine bottle tucked under his arm. The two men stand before a screen. The walls of the room are hung with portraits and a mirror; a grandfather's clock showing the time as 6:15 stands against the wall behind the cradle and Susannah.
