A portrait of the rare books collector and Sterling Professor at Yale Chauncey Brewster Tinker by Deane Keller and Theodore Sizer. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed at the lower left: "Deane / Keller + / Theodore / Sizer / 1959." The portrait is labeled "Chauncey Brewster Tinker" above, and Tinker is also identified as "Keeper of / Rare / Books" at right. A plaque attached to the frame reads: "Chauncey Brewster Tinker 1876 - 1963, B.A. 1899, M.A. 1901, Ph.D. 1902, Litt.D. 1946 / Keeper of Rare Books, 1930-1963. / Painted in 1959 by Deane Keller / Gift of the Class of 1909."
Description:
Deane Keller (1901-1992), American artist, academic, soldier, and preservationist. He earned a BA from Yale University in 1923 and a BFA from the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1926. Keller taught for forty years at the Yale School of Fine Arts, and during World War II was an officer with the Allied Forces's Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Section. and Title devised by cataloger.
