Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, containing primarily the beginnings and endings of various sections of the memoirs of political characters and events during the reign of King George II. The focus of the collection, however, is on the drawings and engraved headpieces and tailpieces which appear on these pages. These include a pen drawing by Richard Bentley of Walpole presenting the work to Democritus, with his villa at Strawberry Hill behind him; the head of George II by Johann Muntz, set in a headpiece designed by Bentley; and engravings of William Murray; Henry Pelham; Thomas Pelham-Holles; and Archibald Campbell, many also set in pieces drawn by Bentley. The collection also contains a pencil drawing of Henry Lord Holland, with the annotation, "Sr H. Reynolds pinxt"; an appendix explaining the engravings; and a newspaper notice of the death of William Stanhope, Earl of Harrington

Either a copy or the original of British Museum satire no. 7388, in any event similar design except that Sydney, the coronet, and the tailor's goose are absent and inscriptions have been added; the satire alludes to taxes imposed by Pitt prior to 1788. The Prince says: "I appeal to the People of England to defend their own Rights and those of the House of Brunswick against this Banditti of Plunderers". Richmond says: "Tho' a Bastard of the Stuart Race, I have only 17,000£,per Ann: from the Poor, for my duty on Coals - make it 20,000 Prince Pitt, and I am yours for ever." (An allusion to the 'Richmond shilling', see BMSat 7393.) Grafton says: "I am as good a bastard as R------d, & yet I have only 6 or 7000£ a year upon the Excise on Wine & spiritous liquors - But Prince Pitt has promis'd me an additional Tax on Malt." Pitt says: "The Prince of Wales has no more right to the rightegency than I have." The paper in his hand is inscribed, not 'Dornford's Address', but 'Shop Tax Window Tax Candles Tax Horse Tax Hat Tax Westminster Scrutiny Irish Propositions Fortification Schemes Degradation of Naval Officers Excise Laws &c. &c. &c. &c.'"

The date April 1, 1837 appears on the back., A modern reprint (ca 1987) of the 1854 original; sold by Pollock's Toy Theatres, Covent Garden, London., and "Green's Juvenile drama". From Horace Walpole's 1784 edition of Description of the villa, he describes the Beauclerk drawings thus: "The beauty and grace of the figures and of the children are inimitable; the expression of the passions most masterly, particularly in the devotion of the countess with the porter, of Benedict in the scene with Martin, and the tenderness, despair, and resolution of the countess in the last scene; in which is a new stroke of double passion in Edmund, whose right hand is clenched and ready to strike with anger, the left hand relents. In the scene of the children, some are evidently vulgar, the others children of rank; and the first child, that pretends to look down and does leer upwards, is charming. Only two scenes are represented in all the seven, and yet all are varied; and the ground in the first, by a very uncommon effect, evidently descends and rises again. These sublime drawings are the first histories she ever attempted, were all conceived and executed in a fortnight."
