Abstract:
Seven ALS, written by nieces and nephews in Illinois to Blanding and his sister Mrs. Lucy Carpenter. The letters are from Labelle Prairie, Kirkwood, Retreat (on the Fox River), and Mill Brook Farm near Newark. E.L. Bullard writes about prairie fires, farming, attacks of "fever and ague," and acknowledges that she would not have moved to Illinois had she known the hardships she would encounter there. Other letters contain family news and refer to the severe winter of 1848-1849.

Dr. William Blanding and his wife Rachel lived in Philadelphia, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. His nieces and nephews, originally from New England, were E.L. Bullard, married to John R. Bullard, J.S. Murray, and A.P. Murray. His sister was Mrs. Lucy Carpenter of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Abstract:
S. Francis's diary from 1841-1845 describes country life in Vermont and for 1845-1852 records weather, crops, and politics in Illinois. The diary describes an 1852 trip from Illinois to Oregon by way of Des Moines, Kanesville, the Platte to Fort Laramie, the Salt Lake Road, Fort Boise, and Oregon City. Francis traveled with the Wilson and Sheppard families. The account continues for 1852-1862 with notes on farm life in Oregon and comments on the state of the nation prior to the Civil War.

Gift of William Robertson Coe., Notarized attestation of the author's daughter, Dora Francis Frazer, April 1936, is bound with the manuscript., and S. Francis, who was a farmer in Barnard, Vermont, moved his family to Illinois in 1846 and emigrated to Oregon in 1852.
