"Frontispiece to the catalogue of the pictures exhibited by the Society of Artists, at their first exhibition in Spring Gardens; Britannia standing in a rocky landscape, filling a watering can from a fountain with lion's head spout and a bust statue of George III in a niche surmounted by a crown, lettered 'Georgius III Rex. MDCCLXI.'; the watering can pours onto three short trees growing in a clump at right, favouring the one with the trunk labelled 'Architecture' and, to a lesser extent, the tree labelled 'Painting'; the tree 'Sculpture', on slightly lower ground, is not in the line of the spray"--British Museum online catalogue

A group of drawings by George Vertue of items in the Earl of Oxford's collection, many presumably sold in the sale of 1741-2. Among the items depicted are urns, busts and statues, various fragments with Greek inscriptions, a medal, an ossuary, and a sarcophagus. Manuscripts, in numerous hands, of a collection of notes on art. The collection includes numerous lists of works Reynolds saw while visiting Italian museums, houses, and private collections; a pencil drawing of a country house; and an undated letter regarding "the beautiful Episode of Abradatas and Panthea": of this episode, he writes, "it occurred to me that this Story might furnish to the pencil a Suite of Subjects." Other items include a note on Raphael's "School of Athens"; an "Ode, Inscribed to Sir Abraham Hume, on his painting two beautiful Pictures of Views near his seat at Wormley Herts"; and an anonymous criticism of Reynolds' last Discourse on painting and poetry which he had "delivered to the students of the Royal Academy."
