"A phrenologist, De Ville, in his consulting room, feels the forehead of a loutish gaping youth who kneels on a cushion at his feet. Behind the boy stands his stupid-looking mother, grinning with delight at her son. De Ville, who wears plain old-fashioned dress, has a grotesquely shaped skull fringed with scanty hair; his left hand rests on an open book on his table on which is a skull, numbered phrenologically and resting on a paper: Thurtell [murderer] shown to be Craniologically an Excellent Character. Behind him stands an assistant with a porcine profile writing in a note-book: Very large Wit N° 32. A large book-case covers much of the wall (right). There are also portrait heads illustrating grotesque misshapen features, and a bust on a pedestal with a satyr-like profile."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

"Lord Conyngham stands by the counter of Benbow's shop holding out an open book to the shopman with a terrified gesture: "Mr Benbow, Pray who is this!" Benbow, behind the counter, touches the antlered figure of British Museum Satires No. 14029, and one of the fat ladies, answering, "This is Lady H----d and this is Lady C----m." His right hand rests on a pile of caricatures on the counter. A grinning shopman behind the L-shaped counter (right) holds up two fingers to simulate horns above Lord Conyngham's head. The walls of the shop are lined with books; by the counter three bills are displayed, one above the other: [1] 'Just Published 1s 6d Sultan Sham and his Seven Wives' [British Museum Satires No. 14029]; [2] 'Cobbett's Register Sold here also Peep at the Peers' [? British Museum Satires No. 14108]; [3] 'The K. the determiner of the Q'; [4] 'Queen & her Pawns agains the King and his Pecc' [sic, British Museum Satires No. 13946]."--British Museum online catalogue, description of a different version of the same design

"Fox rises from a close-stool; Sheridan (left) is about to apply a syringe, inscribed 'R------ts [Regent's] Clyster', to his rectum. Burke (right), wearing a Jesuit's biretta (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6026), gropes in the close-stool, holding in his left hand its lid, inscribed 'Not searching from Precedents but Consequences' (a characteristic dictum); he says, "To Ordure - Ordure" (Burke was often called to order for his speeches on the Regency, cf. British Museum Satires No. 7499, &c). Fox says, "Exegi Monumentum cere perennias, or the finishing Stroke" (perhaps an allusion to the revolution Pillar, see British Museum Satires No. 7396). In his hand is a paper inscribed 'Magna Charta Non Posteris sed Posterioribus'; his posterior is inscribed 'Patriotic Bum' and 'Vox Populi'. He stands on a paper inscribed 'Resolutions of P------l------t.' Sheridan is 'Principal Promoter of loose Principles'; under his right foot is an open book: 'Congreve Plays School for Scandal', probably implying plagiarism by Sheridan (cf. Moore, 'Life of Sheridan', p. 180, where resemblances between 'The School for Scandal' and 'The Double Dealer' are noted). The background is a library wall: a book-case containing folio volumes in some disorder is flanked by scowling busts of 'Wat Tyler' and 'Jack Kade'. The books are inscribed: 'The Laws of Pharaoh' (Faro, cf. British Museum Satires No. 5972), 'Political Prints', 'Life of Oliver Cromwell' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6380, &c), 'Cataline' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6784), 'Memoirs of Sam House'."--British Museum online catalogue
