"A large and plebeian crowd is being addressed from three roughly made platforms, one being in the middle distance, another in the background. In the foreground (right) a man, supposed to be Thelwall, leans from his rostrum in profile to the left, shouting, with clenched fists, and raised right arm. Behind him stands a ragged barber, a comb in his lank hair, holding out a paper: 'Resolutions of the London Corresponding Society'. Next him, a man with the high-crowned hat and bands of a dissenting minister holds a tattered umbrella over the orator. A man on the steps leading to the platform, wearing a bonnet-rouge (the only one in the crowd) has a vague resemblance to Fox. From the next platform (left) a butcher, supposed to be Gale Jones, bawls at the crowd with raised right arm. Beside him stand a man holding a scroll inscribed 'Rights of Citizens'. The third orator is a tiny figure (Hodgson) with both arms raised. All the platforms are surrounded by crowds, and hats and arms are being waved by those addressed by the butcher. In the foreground (left) a man sits holding out for signature a document which is supported on a barrel of 'Real Democratic Gin by Thelwal & Co.' Three little chimney-sweepers stand round it, one of whom, holding a pen, has just made his mark on the 'Remonstrance', below the signatures of 'Jack Cade', 'Wat Tyler', 'Jack Straw'. All wear caps with the name of their master on a brass plate (according to the Chimney-Sweepers' Act of 1788); this is 'Thelwall'. A fat woman sells a dram to one of the crowd. Another presides over a portable roulette or E.O. table, a 'teetotum', inscribed 'Equality & no Sedition Bill'; three barefooted urchins are staking their pence. The heads in general do not appear to be portraits, but in the centre of the design, with his back to the woman selling drams, is Priestley, caricatured, standing with folded arms facing Thelwall. Abstract:
"An election-procession marches (right to left) towards the hustings which are indicated by a corner of the pediment of St. Paul's Church and a crowd. A band of butchers, with marrow-bones and cleavers, heads the procession. Next walks the Duchess of Devonshire, holding up on a pole a pair of breeches inscribed 'Man of the People', and surmounted by a crowing cock. She is followed by a lady holding up on a pole a placard with 'Fox (a fox) and the Rights of the Commons'. A third lady holds up on a pole a mob-cap and apron inscribed 'No Tax on Maid Servants'. They are followed by sturdy-looking citizens wearing 'Fox' favours, one of whom carries a fourth standard: a key tied in a hoop and inscribed 'Key of the Back Stairs', [This emblem appears to have been first used on 14 Feb., during Fox's procession to Devonshire House (see British Museum Satires No. 6421, &c), when 'at Lord Temple's, a wag held up a flag tied to a stick, hung round with crape, which he called 'the Secret Influence Key in Mourning'. Full and Authentic Account of the Proceedings in Westminster Hall', 1784, pp. 26-7 n.] in allusion to the 'secret influence' which favoured Pitt, cf. British Museum Satires No. 6417. &c, 6557, 6592, 7139, 7325, 7339, 7372, 7634, 8102. House is seen between the first two ladies, waving his hat and wildly cheering the procession; other spectators do the same. See British Museum Satires No. 6475, &c. The Duchess is more characterized than her two companions, who are probably her sister Lady Duncannon and perhaps Mrs. Crewe, cf. British Museum Satires No. 6493, &c. "A paunchy carbuncled fellow, wearing old-fashioned court-dress, with ribbon, star, sword, and bag-wig, peacocks with hands on hips before an amused group in a narrow 'Whitechaple' street. They are outside the new peer's shop, from which projects a pole supporting a sign: 'Breeches cleaned lined and Repaired' and an old pair of breeches. A fat woman, probably his wife, wearing a feathered cap, stands on a step-ladder scrubbing the board above the shop-front: 'Stichall Breeches [Maker] to his Serene Highness the . . .' On the shop is a bill 'To be Sold the good Will of the Shop - Removed to Grovesner Place'. The upstart looks over his shoulder with sour defiance at the neighbours who crowd round him, highly amused, a butcher in the forefront. "Scene at a conjurer's. A man covered with a shaggy skin, with bull's horns, stands in a circle, impersonating the Devil. A butcher cheers on his dog who is worrying the pseudo-Devil, while the conjurer (left), wearing robes and a fur cap, stands behind, in angry alarm. A stuffed crocodile, celestial globe, &c, decorate the room. An inscription relates at length that the butcher has gone to consult the conjurer about some lost sheep, when his dog springs at the 'Devil', thinking it is a bull; he detects the cheat and refuses to call off his dog.
