"A companion print to BMSat 9670. In a squalid room French dancers practise to a fiddle played by an older man (right) who dances as he plays. The parents of the four children dance, facing each other. She is elegant, buxom, with an elaborate feathered coiffure. He is lean, wearing a tattered but well-fitting coat over bare legs, with sleeve-ruffles (cf. the old gibe that the Frenchman wore ruffles but no shirt). He wears a toupee wig with a long queue. A boy and girl, both with hair elaborately dressed, dance together more vigorously. A little girl (right) with bare legs practises the first position, heels together. On the left a boy plays the pipe and tabor to two dogs, one wearing cloak and hat, whom he is teaching to dance. His chair is the only furniture except for a truckle-bed (left) turned up to the wall and a much-tilted wall-mirror (right). A lean cat has climbed to a small cupboard recessed in the wall near the ceiling and licks a stoppered bottle. The cupboard contains a coffee-pot, a covered jar, &c. He carries her umbrella, cloak, pattens, and a bundle in a check handkerchief. She holds a fan. An elderly man (right) walking in the opposite direction looks angrily at the couple; he swaggers in front of his pretty young wife, who appears pregnant and walks carrying a little girl and an umbrella. An angry, bare-breasted young woman in a night dress and cap enters the door of a sitting room from a bedroom (seen through the open door on the right). She scowls at the white-haired man relaxed in an armchair in front of a fire; he smokes a pipe and holds a goblet of wine in his left hand as he leans back in the chair, his feet resting on the grate of the roaring fire; at his elbow a table with a lit candle, carafe, jug, spoon, and book "Miseries of Human Life". One dog sleeps near a gun propped up against the mantel piece; a hunting cap hangs on back wall. Another dog looks at the woman from under the table at the man's side and barks. A large cat that has come in with the woman hisses back at him. A book on the mantel is titled "Rule a wife and have a wife"; the painting above the mantel "Mr. Pantons grey mare ranter out of doll tearsheet." In a rustic bedroom, a pretty, buxom young woman kneels before an open chest in which is hidden a handsome young soldier. As she holds open the lid of the trunk the two kiss, unaware that an ugly old man glares at them through a open, casement window and unaware that she has upset the full chamber pot at her feet. Beside the trunk are a hat filled with fruit, a bottle of eau de vie, and a mouse in a trap.
