"George IV, dressed as a magician, rises from the throne (right) to give a wooden sword to Canning, who is dressed as Harlequin. A clown (intended for Melville) turns his back on Canning and the King, to run off, registering anger and alarm. Wellington stands fiercely, with legs astride, both arms raised, holding his sword; he wears uniform with boots and cocked hat. On the left Eldon and Westmorland stand together, with flexed knees, registering senile dismay. The latter, dressed as Pantaloon, drops his crutch. The King, in a robe bordered with symbols (serpents, &c), has the curled wig and whiskers which he had discarded (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14637). He chants: Harlequin! the Gods above have now decreed That thou and all thy measures shall succeed. Fear not old El--n, nor that Pantaloon, West----d, the bold Duke, nor the Scotch Clown. Who e'er opposeth thee, thou by love shalt thrive; Thy Genius and my Cunning him shall drive To H--ll's abyss. "Four grotesque men, all crippled or deformed, are in a row before a set of druggist's shelves headed 'Staats Apotheek'. Those on the extreme left and right stand, the others sit. A knock-kneed hunchback (left), smoking a long pipe, the smoke inscribed 'Hellebr . . .', holds a paper: 'Recipe'. A ragged and lame National Guard picks the pocket of his neighbour. Above the shelves, and forming the apex of the design, a fury, Discord, with snaky locks, leans from clouds, holding a flaming sword and looking down threateningly at the conference. On the top shelf are a 'Guillotine' and a bull, 'Phalaris', a block inscribed 'Menschen lief de' next a gallows, a demon. Below are bottles: 'Quint Ess: de Robespierr, Sel de Marat, Recipes en Assignaten [see British Museum Satires No. 8849], Rotten gift [poison for mice], Alb: Graec:' On the wall hang a sword and shackles. A social satire: a beggar wearing ragged clothes and leaning on a crutch hold his hat out towards a old, well-dressed woman as he says, "My angelic young lady! Heaven preserve your ladyship's beautiful shape and countenance these thousand years! Give a halfpenny to a poor old man." Her face is caricatured, with a large pig-like nose from which long hairs protrude and with growths on her face, but she carries a parasol and is fashionably dressed and wears a feather and flower in her hair and earrings and large beaded necklace
