The figure labelled '1' is identified in the text as 'one of the Chief Woman in Smyrna'' and '7' is her daughter; both wear Turkish headdresses. The country girl (3) wears the costume of Scio, and the woman (4) wears a typical dress from Constantinople. See v. 1, p. 159-60.

They sit in a grove of trees, a small pool at the edge, as sheep graze in the distance; the towers from a town can be seen on the horizon
