A gentleman, shown threee-quarters length, stands in a disconsolate manner looking left and pressing a walking stick to his chin; he stands before a table on which are a plate of radishes, a piece of bread, and a beer pot on which is engraved the owner's address "Mills Fleet Markt". The suggestion is that the man is in the Fleet Prison for debt. "The Middlesex Journal", a newspaper which supported the popular side at this period, is on the table; on the wall are a portrait of John Wilkes and "The Middlesex Petition".

Three London scenes: a man being cajoled by two prostitutes, a young man being accosted by two debt-collectors, and a physician attending a patient. In the left scene, the man stands outside a tavern with its fascia lettered "Cordials & compounds" and "Hodg[son's] best", i.e. ale brewed by George Hodgson (and subsequently Mark and Frederick Hodgson) at the Bow Brewery in London: the brewery was rebuilt and enlarged in 1821. The prostitute on the left holds his wallet concealed in her muff while the one on the right tries to steal his fobwatch. A burning gas light on the left indicates night. In the right scene, the moribund patient wearing a nightgown and nightcap sits in an armchair on casters next to the bed, while the physician (a thin elderly bald man in a black suit) looks at him intently from the next chair, and an old nurse stands nearby; medicine bottles on the mantlepiece behind

He responds: ‘God bless me Wot a Posse of ye - I’m very Sorry to inform ye my good Folks that I’ve just been turn’d a Bankrupt’.

"Mrs. Clarke (right) sits triumphantly astride the upper end of a see-saw which is supported on an upholstered stool. The Duke of York (left), dropping his sword, falls headlong from the other end which rests on the ground. She waves her arms, pointing a derisive finger at the Duke, and sings: "Here I go up up up and there you go Down Down Downy, The game it is pretty well up, and so you must fall to the Grouny!"
