"A satire on King Louis XV of France accusing him of treachery showing him sitting on a throne under a canopy, his crown is held over his head by Pride on his left, a peacock in front of her, and two-faced Treachery on his right, behind whom the devil flies waving a firebrand and a Jesuit stands holding up a candle and scroll lettered “Persecution”. The king wears a black mask and the costume of a Roman general, a cloth adorned with fleur-de-lis round his legs and his sandaled feet rest on two books lettered “T[reatie]s”, a paper with the same lettering lies beside these and an open book. An obsequious courtier, a chain round his ankle attached to a book, kneels at the king’s feet as the king hands him a yoke. On the king’s other side another elegant courtier, his ankle chained to a log, exclaims “Oh! Wh(a)t a great Monarch”, a scene of “The [St Bartholomew's Day] massacre of Paris” hangs on the curtain behind the king. To the left of the canopy is an obelisk bearing the image of a weeping “Europa” with her bull and above this a medallion of the “Cat & monkey”. Around the obelisk are a Spaniard holding a rosary and kneeling in prayer before a statue, a Genoese man and a Bavarian (identified in the verses below); at their feet are the words “Here we stand for ye Glory of France”. In the sky above the Eye of Providence looks down on a pair of scales in which the British lion outweighs the French fleur-de-lis. On the right demon is about to hang Justice as a Cardinal (Tencin?) holds up a cross; beside this a man wearing a wig wooden shoes sits astride a braying donkey waves his hat and cries “Vive le Roy”. At the bottom are three scenes: [at left] three men “Burning of Treaties” and the “Pr[agmati]c S[anctio]n”; ... ; [at right] scenes of executions, torture, a village burning and a monk leading a band of troops while another holding up a cross says “one K[in]g one R[e]l[igio]n”). "Three volunteers or militiamen, three-quarter length figures, exult at the head of Bonaparte which one of them (right) holds up on a pitchfork, saying, "Here he is Exalted my Lads 24 Hours after Landing." The head is in profile to the left, the sharp well-cut features contrast with those of the chubby yokels. The centre figure, holding out his hat, says, turning to the left: "Why Harkee, d'ye zee, I never liked Soldiering afore, but some how or other when I though [sic] of our Sal the bearns, the poor pigs, the Cows and the Geese, why I could have killed the whole Army my own Self." He wears a smock with the crossed straps of a cartouche-box. The third man (left) in regimentals, but round-shouldered and unsoldierly, says: "Dang my Buttons if that beant the Head of that Rogue Boney - I told our Squire this Morning, what do you think say's I the Lads of our Village can't cut up a Regiment of them French Mounsheers, and as soon as the Lasses had given us a Kiss for good luck I could have sworn we should do it and so we have." All three have hats turned up with favours and oak-twigs, the favours being inscribed respectively (left to right): 'Hearts of Oak'; 'Britons never will be Slaves', and 'We'll fight and We'll Conquer again and again'. In the spaces between these foreground figures is seen a distant encounter between English horse and foot and French invaders, who are being driven into the sea, on which are flat-bottomed boats, all on a very small scale. Two women search French corpses; one says: "why this is poor finding I have emtied the pocketts of a score and only found one head of garlic 9 onions & a parcel of pill Boxes." Cf. "Satire on the changing fashions for women, with women in a shop buying new heads, backsides, legs etc."--British Museum online catalogue and Interior of a crowded shop, with shelves of elaborately-coiffed human heads. A sword lies on the floor, evidently having been employed to behead a lady who stands having her new head put in place by a shop assistant. Next to her is another lady having her head struck off by a man wielding mallet and chisel. On the far right a tall lady appears to be shopping for false bosoms and derrières. The doors to the shop bear signs "Avis au public: Têtes a changer." With 18 lines of French verse below design

An allegorical representation of France with Liberty as a young woman bound and being dragged from a temple, Libertas, by French soldiers to face a angry mob, two decapitated heads at the base of the stairs. One soldier breaks a staff with a liberty cap at the top. A woman kneels a fire which consumes a spinning wheel and is fed books carried by laborers. A crowd of artists, musicians, carpenters, smiths, weavers and other tradesmen are roughly pushed away from the temple by a soldier. In the background a church which has been turned into a theatre attracts a large crowd to a production of "The massacre at Paris."
